1 Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Financial Support - Law Description West Virginia University College of Law invites applicants for the position of Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Financial Support. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the operations of the Admissions and Financial Aid/Scholarships area, including outreach and recruitment, programming and special events, admission counseling for potential students, recruitment marketing, financial aid and scholarships operations and counseling, and the compilation and dissemination of all required and requested statistical admission and financial aid/scholarship reports for the College of Law. This position manages a staff that includes two Assistant Directors and a support staff person. This position serves as the chief admissions and financial aid/scholarship officer of the College. The primary responsibility of the assistant dean is to design and execute a strategy to support the College s enrollment goals, including an ambitious program of soliciting and developing enrollment and financial aid /scholarship opportunities, developing progressive programming, and providing proactive admission and financial aid/scholarship counseling. The position requires after hours, weekend hours, and travel. Areas of Focus Outreach and Recruitment Develop and maintain effective relationships with potential applicants, their families, alumni, the WV Bar, law firms, and pre-law advisors at other colleges and universities Serve as an active member of the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) Develop a strategic plan and actively recruit qualified students through LSAC recruitment forum participation, CRS (candidate referral service), social media, personal contact, college visits, programming, and internal recruitment efforts Develop and implement a strategic communication plan, in consultation with the director of communication and marketing, for potential students Manage the application process, ensuring both quality and quantity enrollment and application goals are met Lead the LL.M. recruitment and admission process Lead the transfer student recruitment and admission process Direct the on-campus recruitment program Develop publications and advertising materials, coordinating mailings and forecasting target markets for potential students Develop and implement outreach initiatives for Admissions and Financial Aid/Scholarships
2 Coordinate travel schedule and arrangements of staff as to assist in meeting strategic recruitment and enrollment goals Programming and Special Events Create and conduct programming opportunities, (workshops, information sessions, open houses, individual campus visits, etc ) to introduce potential students to WVULaw, ultimately leading to making application and enrollment Develop, coordinate, and implement special events such as Admitted Student Day, Bridging the Gap, High School Minority Day, Experience WVULaw Day(s), Prelaw Advisor Workshop, Summer Law Institute, Making Application to Law School, etc Assist in preparing and orienting new students to the College of Law Create and provide financial aid/scholarship programming opportunities (financial planning, debt management, CashCourse) for potential and current students Admission and Financial Aid/Scholarship Counseling Counsel potential students on the criteria of application and admission to the College Counsel potential and current students on financial aid/scholarship matters Meet with potential students, by one on one, in groups and through telephonic consultations on admissions and financial aid/scholarship opportunities Do all of the above with a sense of professionalism and compassion while remaining mindful of confidentiality Writing and Editing Responsible to assist with the design and production of recruitment materials such as the College Viewbook, at a glance brochure, social marketing, etc Responsible for preparing and editing all admissions and financial aid/scholarship communications Prepare statistical reports; draft reports for internal and external constituencies; write strategic plan and budgetary request Write and edit of Admission publications and policies and Financial Aid/Scholarship publications, including website content Internal and External Relationships Represent the College to internal and external audiences; market services to potential students and alumni Demonstrate positive attitude and positive action through a display of courtesy, congeniality, cooperation, sensitivity and professionalism Work with various constituents, including faculty, staff, student organizations, alumni and other university departments Participate in College of Law events, including speaking at law school orientation and other College-wide events Attend Law School events, including graduation, Dean s Partners, alumni receptions, Homecoming, symposiums and other events Be an active participant in professional organizations related to law school admissions and financial aid/scholarships Provide an engaging and stimulating admissions and financial aid/scholarship environment and culture Develop staff job descriptions, recommend and administers personnel policies
3 Recruit, hire, evaluate, promote, and terminate staff according to University policies Define expectations for staff performance and set goals for service, programming, and professional development Lead planning for optimum utilization of personnel skills, abilities, talents, and interests Serve as a positive role model to staff on professionalism, professional ethics, and professional knowledge Attend professional meetings to maintain networking with other professional admissions and financial aid/scholarship related agencies Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance leadership skills and maintain an awareness of new trends and developments in legal education Facilitate admissions procedures involving enrollment management committee file review, decisions, and data analysis to support decision making Serve on College and University committees, task forces, and work groups Data reporting, Strategic Planning and Assessment Integrate current technology to support all components of the admission and financial aid/scholarship area Compile and maintain all statistical information on recruiting, admissions, and financial aid/scholarships for use in national surveys, including U.S. News & World Report and American Bar Association Responsible for mailings and social media to potential students; Write annual reports and strategic reports; create yearly budget for the admissions and financial aid/scholarship area Prepare statistical and other reports for internal and external constituencies for admissions and financial aid/scholarships Develop and coordinate admissions and financial aid/scholarships expense budgets to support strategic initiatives Direct and coordinate activities for which responsibility is delegated to further attainment of strategic plan Lead a balanced program of admissions and financial aid/scholarships programs/services to meet the immediate and future goals of the College enrollment management plan Develop and implement strategic initiatives for admissions and financial aid/scholarships in alignment with the WVULaw s strategic plan Utilize assessment techniques and analyze data impacting the effectiveness and efficiency of admissions and financial aid/scholarship s operation Identify emerging trends and technologies in legal education and utilize this information to implement at WVULaw Access programs and services of Admissions and Financial Aid/Scholarships as compared to national benchmarks and best practices Other duties/responsibilities as may be assigned by the Associate Dean for Administration and Finance.
4 Qualifications The successful candidate must possess a master s or equivalent degree with a minimum of eight years of demonstrated progressive experience in higher education or legal education recruiting; or a Juris Doctor degree with a minimum of five years of demonstrated progressive relevant experience. The successful candidate must too have demonstrated leadership ability, including strategic planning, budget, staff and project management. Excellent oral and written communication skills, are required, as well as demonstrated organizational and interpersonal skills, including a strong commitment to student success, are required to thrive in the team-centered atmosphere in the College of Law. Demonstrated ability to make independent and informed decisions and experience with assessment and program outcomes. This position is expected to work effectively with applicants, students, faculty, staff, and administration to communicate the strengths and mission of the College. Additional preferred qualifications include: exceptional computer skills; and demonstrated leadership ability, including strategic planning, budget, program development, and project management. In addition, the following qualities and capabilities will be essential for the successful candidate Possess an engaging, positive, and approachable personality that invites collaboration, builds mutual respect, and demonstrates an inherent ease in establishing rapport with broad and diverse constituencies Exhibit and sustain a high degree of energy, drive, and passion that readily engages and inspires others Demonstrate skills of imagination, creativity, and innovation coupled with the leadership, management, and execution skills needed to bring others on board with a vision to proactively advance strategic goals and objectives Possess a vision for, and comprehensive understanding of, an engaging admission program and its relationship to the College of Law Demonstrate a flexible attitude and be comfortable leading change and continuous improvement even in a changing environment Possess knowledge of, and appreciation for, an active recruitment plan within a law school environment Possess a strong work ethic, coupled with the skill necessary to prioritize and organize multiple responsibilities and goals Demonstrate an awareness of current issues in legal education, specific to attorneys Demonstrate a record of superior communication and presentation skills, successful relationship-building, and collaboration with internal (e.g., students, faculty, staff and stakeholders of the College of Law) and external constituencies (e.g., applicants, alumni, attorneys, the judiciary, and members of the local community) Maintain active involvement in professional associations Possess a keen sense of humor Possess a willingness to be adaptable and flexible while being creative in looking beyond traditional solutions Demonstrate self-confidence and possess the interpersonal skills necessary to relate effectively with others Demonstrate commitment to cultural diversity Demonstrate ability to work with individuals or groups from diverse backgrounds Demonstrate ability to make independent and informed decisions
