1 Job Description Job Title: Deputy Headmaster/Mistress Accountable to: Headmaster/Mistress Main Responsibilities Assist the Headmaster/Mistress in managing this all-through school, having oversight of routines, communications and events, and seeking ways to improve organisational effectiveness throughout the school. Lead Teaching and Learning, holding responsibility for educational standards across the school. Lead Pastoral Care, with oversight of the behaviour and welfare of all pupils in the school. Undertake the normal responsibilities of a subject teacher (Secondary phase) as agreed Undertake in the absence of the Headmaster/Mistress and to the extent required by the Headmaster/Mistress and the Governing Body, the professional duties of the Headmaster/Mistress Undertake any professional duty of the Headmaster/Mistress which may be delegated by the Headmaster/Mistress Leadership & Management HR Be a member of the Senior Management team and other staff teams as appropriate and to contribute to the development of policy and planning for the school. Play a major role under the overall direction of the Headmaster/Mistress in formulating and reviewing the School Development Plan and the aims and objectives of the school by: o internalising and implementing the vision for Gildredge House o establishing the policies through which they shall be achieved o leading and managing staff and resources to that end o monitoring progress towards targets Maintain and develop the ethos, values and overall purposes of Gildredge House. Assist the Headmaster/Mistress as required and to deputise for him / her when necessary. Deputise as necessary for other members of the Senior Management team. Be responsible for the professional and personal support of staff. Line management of all academic staff and oversight of discipline matters. Have oversight of the school s appraisal system for the purpose of informing personal professional development and performance management. Plan and have oversight of the Staff Development Programme, including schoolbased INSET and budget management. Have oversight of the school s induction arrangements for newly qualified teachers, supply teachers and others new to the school.

2 Participate in the recruitment and development of teaching and non-teaching staff. Organise staff consultative meetings. Teaching and Learning Lead the Teaching and Learning strategy. Have responsibility for the policies and procedures for curriculum, teaching and learning, assessment, recording and reporting; Oversee the development, organisation and implementation of the school s curriculum: o ensuring that the learning and teaching provided by different teaching teams form a co-ordinated, coherent curriculum entitlement for individual pupils; o ensuring that information on pupil progress is used to improve teaching and learning, to inform and motivate pupils, to inform parents, to provide necessary references for other educational institutions and employers and to aid Governors in their management of the school; o ensuring that the individual pupil s continuity of learning and effective progression of achievement are provided for in this all-through school by liaison with fellow school leaders, teachers and support staff; Oversee the planning and allocation of resources designed to facilitate the planned curriculum, including advising the Headmaster/Mistress on current/anticipated needs for staff and other resources. Oversee the compilation of the school timetable and planning of teaching groups at all levels, including the deployment of staff, rooms and other resources. Oversee the planning and co-ordination of a whole school homework policy and the administration of a homework timetable. Oversee pupil assessment and the monitoring of academic standards. Provide guidance and support to academic departments in implementing schemes of work and ensure that statutory and school policies are being met. Ensure that arrangements are in place for the identification and support of children of all abilities. Undertake the normal responsibilities of a secondary subject teacher as agreed. Pastoral Care Lead the Pastoral Care strategy. Lead the development, organisation and implementation of policy for the personal and social development of pupils including pastoral care and guidance. Oversee the effective induction of pupils and the determination of appropriate pupil groupings Promote standards of conduct, discipline and proper regard for authority and the encouragement of good behaviour among pupils. Develop a culture of high attendance and high achievement Handle individual pupil disciplinary cases that may arise Ensure a high level of provision for the pastoral needs and well-being of every pupil. Oversee tutorial systems and procedures.

3 Oversee a comprehensive programme of extracurricular activities and development opportunities. Liaise with parents, carers and external agencies as required. Links with Stakeholders Be a conduit between the Headmaster/Mistress and staff and pupils for the communication of information and concerns. Oversee school communications with stakeholders and give presentations as necessary. Attend meetings as appropriate with the Governing Body and parents and to provide such reports and information as is required. Promote links with other schools and agencies This job description does not constitute a complete description of duties. The Deputy Headmaster/Mistress shall carry out the professional duties of a school teacher, including those duties particularly assigned by the Headmaster/Mistress as set out above but not restricted to them. The post-holder may be required to undertake other duties as reasonably be required by the Headmaster/Mistress.

4 Gildredge House Person Specification: Deputy Headmaster/Headmistress Pastoral/Ed Development (with teaching responsibility 11-19) On appointment the Deputy Headmaster/Headmistress will have specific responsibility for Teaching and Learning, Pastoral Care and Personal Development across the school. Essential Qualifications Honours degree from a recognised university Experience At least 4 years successful teaching experience in the secondary age range, with the ability to teach a curriculum subject to A Level Leadership experience in the secondary age range with significant pastoral element Knowledge & Understanding Substantial knowledge and understanding of learning and teaching Confident use of a range of ICT skills Understanding of the principles of Assessment for Learning Knowledge and understanding of data analysis and the ability to use data to set targets for improvement Confident in whole school selfvaluation Up to date knowledge & understanding of the current national education agenda Understanding of how children & adults learn and effectively apply their learning Desirable QTS NPQH Additional higher educational qualifications e.g. MA or MEd Experience of working with and involving school Governors Experience of teaching in more than one Key Stage Experience of working with and developing links with the community Awareness of Free Schools
