3 Seal of Biliteracy Biliteracy Awards Silver Seal: Foreign Language students- Intermediate Mid proficiency in English and partner language ELL students-- Level 4 proficiency in English and partner language Gold Seal: Foreign Language students-- Intermediate High proficiency in English and partner language ELL students--level 4.5 proficiency in English and partner language Platinum Seal: Foreign Language students Advanced Low proficiency in English and partner language ELL students--level 5 proficiency in English and partner language The Seal of Biliteracy is an award in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation. The Seal of Biliteracy encourages students to pursue biliteracy, honors the skills our students attain, and can be evidence of skills that are attractive to future employers and college admissions offices. Criteria: 1. Proficiency demonstrated on standardized state assessments MCAS Proficient score of 240 or above ACCESS 2. Proficiency demonstrated on standardized assessment: AAPL (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish Cost $20) STAMP (Hebrew or Italian Cost $25) ALIRA (Latin Cost $10) 3. Proficiency demonstrated by Portfolio only when there is no standardized assessment available in the partner language. 4. Complete all high school graduation requirements For more information, see Ms. Vadhera Applications are due to a Foreign Language Teacher by January 19, Current Juniors and Seniors are encouraged to apply.

5 College/Career Planning at NHS Counselors will visit junior English classes 1/29-1/31 Course selection Juniors will be meeting with their counselors after February vacation to select courses and review the college planning timeline Junior Seminar Students will meet with a counselor a few times during term 4 in a workshop setting to help navigate the college/career planning process Individual Meetings We will be meeting with juniors individually to design a personal plan for college/career Parent/Guardian Individual Meetings with student s counselors Designated for the week of March 12 th but you can schedule a meeting whenever it is convenient for you. Senior Seminar Next fall, 2018 during Term 1 Students are scheduled into this class once per cycle to meet with a guidance counselor

11 NHS SAT PREP COURSE Begins in March and leads up to the May SAT (No class during April vacation) Either Wednesday or Thursday (Exact schedule still being determined) Two 80-minute classes (Math & Critical Reading/Writing) Cost is approximately $200 More details to follow

13 Athletics If a student is interested in playing sports at the college level, he/she must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center. To register, go to and return the school form to his/her counselor.

14 What should students be doing now? Sign up for the March 10 th and/or May 5 th SAT Register for the SAT Prep NHS starts early March Course selection - Make sure students have conversations with their teachers about appropriate course levels for next year Keep grades up! This is an important year and admissions counselors want to see a positive trend in grades Conduct a college search on Naviance or College Board ( try to have about schools on the list VISIT COLLEGES a great time to do this is February and/or April vacation because schools are still in session Update student resume in Naviance Ask one/two teachers to write letter of recommendation teacher/student contract is due by June 1 st
