1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: Post No: Department: Location: Salary: Tenure: Reports to: Accountable to: Responsible for: Associate Dean (International) AH178XX Cardiff School of Health Sciences Based in Cardiff but required to travel overseas as and when required Negotiable 1FTE Permanent Dean of School PVC International Staff as determined by Dean of School Purpose of Post: The post holder is accountable for delivering corporate and school internationalisation objectives. Alongside their responsibilities as Associate Dean (International), they will have a teaching, administration and research/enterprise load. A balanced portfolio is to be discussed with successful candidates. The post holder will work as a member of the School Management Team and assist colleagues to achieve internationalisation objectives within the School, and be responsible for integrating an international, intercultural or global dimension into all the School activities. To manage staff, activities and resources within defined budgets to a high level of performance, and to maximise the achievement of the key strategic aims and objectives of Cardiff Metropolitan University (referred to as the University). The post holder s performance will be initially evaluated by the PVC (International). Page 1 of 10
2 Summary of Accountabilities and Responsibilities: 1. Work with the Dean and other senior managers in the School (in particular the Deputy Dean (Learning and Teaching), and the Associate Deans (Research) and (Enterprise), and to agree a strategic direction that is in line with the University s internationalisation strategy. 2. Reporting to the Dean to lead across the School the implementation and delivery of University and School policies, strategic decisions and compliance requirements particularly those related to internationalisation. 3. Lead and manage within the School in relation to international collaborative partners on aspects related to international student recruitment, partner relationship management, international programmes, student mobility and on an internationally focused curriculum. In order to develop new markets, the post-holder may be required to design, develop and lead new programmes that meet the needs of international markets. 4. Manage staff, activities and resources to achieve School and University targets and objectives. 5. Work with the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) to develop new areas of work, portfolios of programmes and new funding sources. 6. Work with the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) to manage local and University-wide internationalisation projects as appropriate. 7. Work with the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) to engage in effective internal and external partnership arrangements appropriate to Schools activities in line with the University internationalisation strategy. 8. Work with Associate Deans (Research) and (Enterprise) in the School to expand international research and enterprise opportunities. 9. Identify and promote cross University collaboration with other Associate Deans (International). 10. Work with the Deputy Dean (Learning and Teaching) to develop, support and evaluate equality and diversity initiatives. 11. Work with the Deputy Dean (Learning and Teaching) and with the International Office to protect and enhance student well-being. 12. Work with School administrative and academic staff, Academic Registry and International Office staff on matters relating to the administration and attendance of international students. Page 2 of 10
3 13. Work closely with the International Office and Alumni Office on the development of the University global profile and expansion of its international alumni relations. 14. Work with the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) Write proposals and/or bids for European funding for Internationalisation. 15. Work with the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International) to develop overseas partnerships in line with the University s internationalisation agenda. 16. Work closely with International Office colleagues on developing the school marketing strategy and international student recruitment, outward mobility and establishment of summer schools. 17. Where appropriate, deliver teaching overseas. 18. Play a University-wide role, working with the Pro Vice-Chancellor (International), International Office on international market development, Transnational Education and aspects that will develop and enhance the University as a global university, and engaging with, and influencing, national and international stakeholders. 19. Work closely with the other Schools to establish an effective link between the Programme Directors, Module Leaders and student representatives on internationalisation. 20. Work closely with the Deputy Dean (Learning and Teaching) and the Dean of Quality Standards to ensure that international activity complies with the University s academic and standards and quality. 21. Make a valuable contribution to the leadership and management of the School and help ensure that the School Management Team creates a supportive, vibrant and engaging achievement-oriented culture which facilitates timely and effective change. 22. Ensure effective two way communication throughout the School in relation to relevant University and School internationalisation strategies, policies and projects ensuring staff, students and other stakeholders are consulted, listened to and well-informed. 23. Liaise, co-operate, collaborate and communicate effectively with colleagues both within the School and the wider University including the central and professional service functions to share good practice, innovate and improve performance to create a culture of continuous enhancement within the School in relation to internationalisation. Promote a welcoming and stimulating international and multicultural academic and social environment in the School for incoming staff and students from overseas, and for international visitors. 25. Promote an understanding and appreciation amongst the School and its students of the opportunities and value of internationalisation. 26. Contribute to staff induction, training and development relevant to remit within the School. 27. Contribute to internationalisation initiatives for academic staff, including the development of staff capability to internationalise their curricula. 28. Engage in the development of a strong and cohesive School Management Team. 29. Promote a positive image for the University throughout all School activities. 30. Attend and proactively contribute to University committees, boards/working groups as appropriate to the role. 31. Substitute for the Dean of School as required. 32. Undertake teaching and engage in advanced research and/or enterprise, as agreed by the Dean of School. School Specific Responsibilities 1. Contribute to the School s internationally excellent applied research and enterprise, with a particular focus on building international research collaborations; supervision of PhD students; applications for research funding and production of internationally excellent research outputs;. 2. Contribute to the learning and teaching across the school taking an interdisciplinary approach to developing and delivering an internationalization curriculum. 3. Contribute to the development and delivery of transnational education. 4. Contribute to the learning and teaching in their discipline at undergraduate and postgraduate level including curriculum design, delivery and assessment. Page 4 of 10
5 The Associate Dean (International) will be required to travel overseas as necessary in the fulfillment of the requirements of the job. These guidelines are provided to assist you in the performance of your contract. The university is a dynamic organisation; therefore changes may be required from time to time. Ability to act as an ambassador in relation to promoting and marketing the subject area, school and institution.
