3 Buzz Words Naviance our web shared guidance portal, used for letters of recommendation, electronic submission of your son/daughter s transcript. Common Application (Common App)- a central on-line application that allows students to complete one application and copy to approximately 600 colleges in 47 states that subscribe to common app. FERPA (Family Education Rights & Privacy Act) Waiver- this is integrated with many aspects of the application process. Students are strongly encouraged to waive their right. College Board- SAT & SAT IIs ACT-
4 Important Terms To Remember Early Action- non-binding, receive early response without commitment Early Decision- binding agreement, full commitment on the part of the student to attend specific college/university Reach Schools- Colleges a student would like to attend and their chances of admission are extremely competitive Schools are very competitive for this student Range Schools- Colleges a student would like to attend and they have a 50/50 chance of being accepted Safety Schools- Colleges a student would like to attend and their chance of being accepted are likely

6 What the school counselors take care of in the application process: Official HS transcripts Teacher letters of recommendation- upon request (2) Counselor letter of recommendation if requested (1) Secondary School Report- completed on-line School Profile
7 Student responsibilities in the application process Log into Naviance early to ensure that they can access their accountif not they must their counselor and we will reset their user name and password (do not wait till your senior meeting) Updating their list on Naviance moving colleges they are intending to apply to into colleges I m applying to Taking all proper steps to secure teacher letters of recommendation Be aware of guidelines/ deadlines! Students should anticipate submitting completed application approximately 1 week prior to the school s actual deadlines! Sending their own test scores directly from SAT and/or ACT Completing the essay and pasting it into applications Completing and submitting their applications (we will help with this anytime) Completing transcript requests and release of records Paying for application fees on line Follow up afterwards with a thank you note to your teachers.
8 Teacher Letters of Recommendation Typically students should ask two teachers from their junior year. At least one should be from their field of interest (most related to their potential major). Letters of recommendation are requested through Naviance and attention to detail is required on the students part: Students MUST ask in person prior to asking online via Naviance Students MUST complete a recommendation survey Students MUST formally request the letter using their Naviance account All requests MUST be made at least 3 weeks prior to the deadline that students specify Students are strongly encouraged to follow up with a thank you note to teachers.
9 Naviance Information Naviance is a shared guidance portal, used for letters of recommendation, electronic submission of your son/daughter s transcript. This allows for communication between all parties (teacher, college, student, counselor and Common App). In order for us to send transcripts, students MUST be sure that they add ALL colleges that students apply to, Common App or not, MUST be reported in Naviance s colleges I m applying to. We have provided screen shots on the following slides to demonstrate the fine details involved in using Naviance throughout the application process.
10 The Welcome Screen for Students on Naviance Family Connection All students should know their username and password for their Naviance account, however if anyone has questions please have them contact their counselor.

13 Completing the Survey This survey consists of 13 questions and should take students between 25 and 45 minutes to complete. Students must be sure to save at the end (either I m finished or return later).
14 The Common Application commonapp.org One central on-line application that allows students to complete one application and copy to approximately 600 colleges in 47 states that subscribe to Common App. All CT state schools subscribe to Common App. Students should create an account using their as a log in and a password that is between 8 and 16 characters long it must include upper and lowercase letters, at least one number and a symbol. (i.e. Bellringer#1) Students will need to have parental involvement filling certain sections- please make some time for your son/daughters.

19 Testing SAT I Reasoning- Critical Reading, Math & Writing/Essay SAT II- One Hour Subject Specific Tests- more selective colleges, check with each individual school, check on recommended vs. required ACT- English, Math, Reading, Science Reasoning, optional writing component. Some schools may take ACT in place of SAT II subject tests. Students should take the writing section as it will be required by many schools when submitting ACT scores Students are encouraged to take a total of at least THREE standardized tests for college admissions, and should take both the ACT and the SAT at least once.
20 More testing information If you need to register for another test please register online SAT- collegeboard.org and ACT- actstudent.org REMEMBER our school code is Pay attention to deadlines & register on time!! Once you are have selected schools to apply to please note that it is the STUDENTS responsibility to send their own test scores directly from SAT and/or ACT. Typical costs range from $10-$15/school. Upon registering for a test you can receive 4 FREE score reports- consider this if you have a definite list of colleges.

22 Financial Aid CSS/ Financial Aid Profile- check and see if your schools require this. Can be completed starting on October 15 th. FAFSA- MUST be completed by all applicants for federal student aid every year. September/October: Be sure that your student develops a SAT/ACT testing plan (with counselor) Access and become familiar with Naviance if you need help see your counselor Be sure that your child ATTENDS meetings with us Students must COMPLETE the recommendation form and the request letters of recommendation FINALIZE and UPDATE list of colleges in Naviance REGISTER & work on COMMON APP BRAINSTORM/DRAFT essay ATTEND Open Houses Pay close attention to deadlines! Send their SAT/ACT scores directly to the colleges of their choice.
