1 Indian Institute of Technology Madras Office of International & Alumni Relations International Symposium for Research Scholars on Metallurgy and Materials Science and Engineering 2016 (ISRS 2016) December 21-23, 2016, IC&SR, IIT Madras Organized by Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT Madras A Report The Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras in association with the Indian Institute of Metals, Chennai Chapter, the Material Advantage Chapter, IIT Madras, and the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Students Association, IIT Madras, successfully organized the 7th International Symposium for Research Scholars on Metallurgy, Materials Science and Engineering (ISRS-2016) between December 21-23, ISRS 2016 is a dedicated symposium solely for research scholars working on metallurgy, materials science and engineering. The Department has been organising a national level biennial symposium exclusively for research scholars since In 2004, the symposium became international in nature and the current edition is the seventh in this series. This edition of ISRS was organized with Prof. B S Murty as Chairman, Prof. M Kamaraj as Convener, Dr. V Subramanya Sarma as Co-Convener, Dr. Murugaiyan Amirthalingam as Treasurer and Mr. E Nandha Kumar as the Student Secretary. Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras was the Chief Guest for the inaugural function. The inaugural function started with a welcome address by the Chairman, Prof. B S Murty. Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras delivered the inaugural address in which he urged the young scholars to take up challenging research problems. Prof. R Nagarajan, Dean, International, & Alumni Relations addressed the gathering and stressed the importance of collaborative research and the role of conferences play in fostering collaborations. Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Prof. R Nagarajan released the souvenir of the symposium along with the chairman Prof. B S Murty. And Convener, Prof. M Kamaraj. Convener Prof. Kamaraj delivered the vote of thanks. Prof. R Nagarajan inaugurated the poster session. During ISRS 2016, research scholars from various academic institutions, research laboratories, and industries across India and abroad presented their research work. A total of 154 abstracts were received out of which 140 were accepted for poster presentation out of which 130 have participated in the symposium. The first day of the symposium had a theme of "Surface Engineering" which is an area of increasing importance to the materials science community. In order to introduce the research scholars to this exciting area, plenary talks were given by Dr. B. Venkataraman, Senior Scientist, Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Hyderabad, and Dr. Dheepa Srinivasan, Principal Scientist, GE Power, GE India Technology

2 Center, Bangalore talked about current challenges in the area of surface modification in the aerospace and power generation industry. In the third session of the symposium, Dr. G. Madhusudhan Reddy, Senior Scientist, Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory, Hyderabad and Prof. Satyam Suwas, Department of Materials Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore delivered invited lectures on the advances in materials joining in defense sector and advanced characterization techniques respectively. In the fourth session, Prof. N. Ravishankar, Materials Research Centre, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, spoke about interesting phenomena that happen at very small length scales with an examples of their studies in golden nano wires. On the last day, Dr. B.P. Gautham, Principal Scientist, TCS Research, Pune gave emphasized through some case studies the importance of adopting computational approaches in the industries to reduce the cost and time in new material and process development. Following the plenary lectures on each of the 3 days, poster presentations were made by the participating scholars. The 130 papers that were presented in the symposium during the 5-poster sessions consisting of approximately 25 papers in each session on 20 diverse topic of materials and metallurgical science and engineering. The extended abstracts of all the presented papers, along with advertisements from sponsors, have been printed in the souvenir brought out on the occasion. 3 The panel of experts in the respective fields evaluated the best posters and were selected to receive prizes. The prizes consisted of a merit certificate, Medal and a cash award of Rs. 10,000, and if the prize was shared by two students, then the cash award was Rs each. A total of 12 prizes were awarded up to a cash value of Rs. 1,20,000/-. For the first time in the history of ISRS, Metallography contest was introduced on three different categories namely optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Transmission electron microscopy. About 35 participants actively participated in the competition and the first and second winners were awarded with merit certificate, medal and cash prize of Rs for the first and if the prize was shared by two students, then the cash award was Rs each and Rs for the runner up. In 2014 edition of ISRS, we introduced the materials quiz. This edition too featured the materials quiz program was also conducted for the registered participants. A total of 34 research scholars participated as 17 teams with each team containing two participants. The quiz program was conducted in two rounds: an initial written elimination round on the first day of the Symposium followed by an oral round on the second day. Prof. S.S. Bhattacharya was the quiz master. Three prizes were awarded with prize money of Rs. 5000, Rs and Rs for the first, second and third prizes respectively. Prof. A K Mishra, Dean (Academic Research), IIT Madras, graced the valedictory function. Dr. V. Subramanya Sarma, Co Convener, ISRS 2016 summarised the technical program. Prof. S. Venugopal Co-ordinator (Technical Committee) announced the awards and Prof. A K. Mishra Dean (Academic Research), IIT Madras presented the awards. The function ended with the vote of thanks proposed by the Treasurer, Dr. Murugiyan. Local hospitality in the form of boarding and lodging was made available to all the participants. The Organizers wish to thank all the members of the Organizing Committee and the International Advisory Committee, participants, guests, advertisers and sponsors for their support in making ISRS 2016 a grand success.
