ORDwillalsobeimplementingCompetitionSpaceto handlethesubmissionandreviewofinternal researchawardprograms,aswellasthe application,review,andawardprocessforexternal NationalScienceFoundationGrant TheNationalSciencefoundation(NSFawarded$1.5M, toeasternmichiganuniversityunderthedirectionofitscolleaguedr.yichunxiefortheproject,"gis/tresourcesandapplications forcareereducation(grace. FundingisbeingprovidedbytheNSFITESTprogram,aprogramdesignedtobuildthebest practicefactors,contextsandprocessescontributiontokd12student smotivationandparticipationinstemandstemcareers. TheGRACEprojectbuildsuponanearliersuccessfulITESTproject:MayorsYouthTechnologyCorps(MYTC.AlsodirectedbyDr. Xie,theMYTCdevelopedamodelofpurposefulapplicationsofgeographicinformationsystemandtechnology(GIS/TDbased educationforstemcareersintheworkplacethatenabledyouthineconomicallydisadvantagedcommunitiestohave opportunitiesfordeterminingtheirownfutures. ByutilizingtheMYTCmodelofpurposefulapplicationsofgeographicinformationsystems,technologybasededucationandits partnershipwiththemichiganvirtualuniversity(mvu,theprojecthopestoengagealargernumberofstudentsgrad8d12, specificallyindisadvantagedcommunities,byfollowingathreestageleaningprocess:explorer,investigator,intern.theexplorer levelintroducesstudentstogis/tthroughgisonlineportaltobuildstudentsbasicunderstandingofgis/taswellaspiquestudent curiosity.theinvestigatorlevelleveragesstudentscuriosityandinterestandpreparesthemtoworkwithgis/tlessonmodules thataredesignedtoenhancethescienceandengineeringpracticesandalignwiththenextgenerationsciencestandards.the InternlevelprovidesstudentswithprofessionalGIS/Ttrainingandwithopportunitiestogainworkexperiencesinlocal organizationsasinterns.theprofessionaldevelopmentactivitiesforteachersaretightlyintegratedwiththisprogressivelearning processsothatadequateinstructionalsupportandtechnicalmentoringwillbeprovided.gracewillcreateamodeltoexpand anddisseminatestemacrossmichiganandreportontheensuingchallengesandsuccesses,demonstratinghowtounitegis/t organizationsandvolunteerswithschools,studentsandteacherstointegrateauthenticgis/tapplicationsincurriculaandprovide a foreseeable careerincentiveforstudentstoenthusiasticallyparticipateinstemlearning. GRACEwillalsoberesponsibleforthestudyofmotivationsandhindrancesofintegratingGIS/Tintoscienceandsocialstudies classroomsanddevelopinganeffectivedeliverymodeldtheuseofonlineandblendedlearning totransformthespeed,easeof replication,andconsistencyofdeliveringinstructionthatiscustomizedtoincreasemotivationandachievementforstudents. ParticipatingteacherswillbeselectedinpartnershipwiththeMichiganMathematicsandScienceCentersNetwork(MMSCN throughregionalmathandsciencecenters(rmsc.interestedrmsc sandschooldistrictswillthenbeorganizedinto geographicallyadjacentlearningclusters,focusingmainlyonmichiganurban(detroit,flint,grandrapids,saginawandrural(the UpperPeninsulaareasthatlackfinancialandinstructionalresources.Thenodular RMSC,possessingdeepknowledgeofregionalSTEMprogramsandleadership,can becountedonhavingdirectcontactwiththeirschooldistricts,assuringthe appropriateteacherwillbeidentifiedforthearea.fromthere,studentswillbe recruitedbytheselectedtheteachersbestsuitedtogageandimplementdirect technologicalintervention. Thisprojectwillaffectandimpact:5000Explorers,2500Investigators,300interns, 120teachers.ItsfindingswillbepublishedinpeerDreviewedjournalsandpresented atprofessionalmeetings,suchasmichiganscienceteachersassociation,national ScienceTeachersAssociation,andNationalAssociationforResearchinScience Teaching. 3

Therearemanyapplications inthehealthcareindustry, foodindustry,meat processingindustry,andfor individualconsumers. CorrosionResistant SealantandCoating: U.S.Patent8,580,894was receivedonnovember12, 2013byRonLewarchik,also ofthecoatingsinstitute, alongwithsimonpalushajof InCoatLLCinMadison Heights,Michigan.This inventionprovidesa penetratingsealantand coatingthatcanbeusedto extendtheservicelifeof concreteproductsandimpart corrosionresistanceto metals.corrosionisa nationallyrecognized problemcostingtheunited Statesbillionsofdollarseach year.concreteproductssuch asroadsandbridgesor residentialpatioanddriveway applications,forexample,are verysusceptibletoweatherd induceddeterioration. PAID1Molecules: Dr.CoryEmal,Associate ProfessorofChemistryat EMU,alongwithcolleagues fromtheuniversityof MichiganandtheUniversity ofmaryland,receivedu.s. Patent8,759,327onJune29, 2014fortheirworkonthe designofmoleculeslinkedto controllingthebuildupof plaqueleadingtobloodclots andblockedarteriesinthe circulatorysystem.these moleculesarespecifically developedtotargethigh levelsofplasmaticinhibitor1 (PAID1.Peoplewithhigh levelsofpaid1areatincreased riskforbloodclotsand blockedarteries.dr. Emal spatentaward recognizesanewmethod ofdemonstratinghow moleculesinteractwith PAID1,andcould potentiallyresultina newcholesteroldrug therapy. AntimicrobialFabric Spray: OnJuly1,2014,Dr.Subhas Ghosh,ProfessorofTextiles andmemberofemu stextile ResearchandTraining Institute,andDr.Vijay Mannari,Professorof PolymersandCoatingsand memberofthecoatings ResearchInstitute,were awardedu.s.patent 8,764,851fortheirinvention ofadurable,rechargeable, andantibacterialfabric treatmentwithmedical, residential,andcommercial applications.this antimicrobialspraycanbe appliedtoawidevarietyof fabricsandcanwithstand repeatedwashings.the inventionofsuchaproduct hasimportantimplicationsfor thehealthcareindustry,for example,inpreventing hospitaldacquiredinfections fromprivacy EMUReceivesFourNewPatents
