2 STUDENT COUNCIL What is Student Council? A Student Council is a representative structure for students only, through which they can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management, staff, and parents for the benefit of the school and its students. What is the mission of KMS Student Council? Karrer Middle School Student Council is a student led organization that provides leadership and service to Karrer Middle School. Students who are elected to this position are organized, driven, and have an interest in learning the basics of student service government. KMS Student Council members are seen as the leaders of the KMS student body. When does the KMS Student Council meet? The KMS Student Council 8 th grade cabinet and 7 th grade cabinet will typically meet the first Thursday of each month. The KMS Student Council Cabinets, Homebase Representatives, and Members At Large will typically meet the third Thursday of each month. We also may have an extra meeting in a month due to a special project we need to complete. The meetings will begin at 7:45 a.m. in the KMS library. Who are the members KMS Student Council? The Karrer Middle School Student Council will be made of 6 th, 7 th, and 8 th grade students. Students may either be elected to be their Homebase Representative or they may apply to be a Member At Large. What is a Student Council Homebase Representative? A Student Council Homebase Representative is a student who will attend the KMS Student Council meetings and report information to his/her homebase. The representatives will also bring comments and concerns from the students of their homebase to the meetings. If there are multiple students applying to be the representative from a homebase, then an election will be held. Candidates will prepare a 1 2-minute speech to share with their homebase. Students may not distribute candy or other items to promote themselves as a candidate to the students in the homebase, this includes signs. Candidates should spend their time creating and practicing their speeches. The voting will take place after all speeches have been given. If you are not elected to be your Homebase Representative, then you may be accepted as a Member At Large.

3 What is a Student Council Member At Large? A Student Council Member At Large is a student who wants to be involved in our Student Council and wants to help make our school even better. A Member At Large may be assigned to a homebase who does not have a representative or he/she may be a part of the general assembly. Karrer Middle School Student Council Responsibilities: - Attend meetings on a monthly basis, possibly two a month, all at 7:45 a.m. - Represent your homebase and students of KMS - Help with and promote the Food Drive, Color Cycle, and Pop Tab drive - Volunteer to help sell canteen tickets and work a shift at KMS canteens - And more! This is a commitment of your time, and you should only run for Student Council if you want to: Work with other students Develop personal leadership skills Plan school events Promote school spirit Conduct service projects Communicate all upcoming fundraisers and events to your assigned homeroom Are you ready to run for Karrer Middle School Student Council? If you would like to be a member of the KMS Student Council, please fill out the application online by the due date listed. Submitting an application online indicates you are willing to commit to the responsibilities of being a Student Council Homebase Representative, a Member At Large, and/or Cabinet member. It is a personal promise that your behavior will represent the best of Karrer Middle School at all times. This also means you understand the time commitment with meetings and service time. Anyone who misses two or more morning meetings or service time could be voted out of KMS Student Council by the KMS Student Council. Student Council is a fun and rewarding way to be involved in the planning of activities at Karrer Middle School!

4 STUDENT COUNCIL 8 th & 7 th GRADES CABINETS What are the 8 th & 7 th Grades Cabinets? An important component of Student Council is developing the leadership skills of the members. This year there will be an 8 th grade and a 7 th grade cabinet. Each cabinet is comprised of an executive board and a board of directors. 1 or more students will be assigned to each position on the cabinet. The 8 th grade cabinet with the help of the 7 th grade cabinet will assist Mrs. Beekman in making this a productive year for KMS Student Council. Who is eligible to run for the cabinet positions? The cabinet positions are open to any 7 th and 8 th grade Karrer Middle School student, who is a member of Student Council, either as a Homebase Representative or as a Member At Large. How does a student run for a position on a cabinet? Students need to complete all portions of the KMS Student Council Cabinet application by the due date listed on the application. Candidates do not make any speeches. Mrs. Beekman will read the applications and post the 8 th grade and 7 th grade Cabinet rosters by the posting date listed on the application. When does the KMS Student Council meet? The KMS Student Council 8 th grade cabinet and 7 th grade cabinet will typically meet the first Thursday of each month. At these meetings, the Cabinet, along with the advisor, will set the agenda for the all meetings, plan events, and other activities to have a productive year. 5 DESCRIPTION OF THE CABINET POSITIONS: The 8 th grade and the 7 th grade Cabinet will each have 1 or more members fill each of these positions. The 7 th grade cabinet member will assist the 8 th grade member(s) in the same role. These are the basics for each position. Executive Board: President: Lead all meetings Give assistance, guidance, and praise Act as a facilitator during discussion Maintain frequent contact with faculty and administration Work with advisor on all planning Participate in student council sponsored activities/events Assist the Field Trip Director in planning the end of the school year In- School Field Trip. Assist the Canteen Director Vice President: Work closely with President Assume President s duties when needed Work with President and Treasurer in preparing calendar and budget Assist the Cabinet in preparing meeting agendas Assist the Food Drive Director in planning the KMS Food Drive Treasurer: Oversee council expenses and revenues Maintain an accurate and detailed financial record Give monetary advice to the council Authorize payment/deposits Work with President and Vice President in preparing calendar and budget Assist the Canteen Concessions Director Recording Secretary: Keep an account of minutes at every meeting Keep an accurate account of attendance at every meeting & canteen Help maintain Student Council files Maintain contact information for people who work with the council Responsible for Thank You cards Assist the Cabinet in preparing meeting agendas Assist the Field Trip Director Public Relations Officer: Keep student body informed of events, fundraisers, and service projects Obtain approval for events Responsible for communication with charitable organizations Assist the Color Cycle Director

6 Historian: Take pictures at all KMS Student Council events Responsible for creating the end of the year slide show for our in-school field trip Create a 1 2 minute commercial promoting KMS Student Council to be run the next school year on WKMS Assist the Pop Tab Director Board of Directors: Field Trip Director: Set the date for the end of the school year in-school field trip Reserve Auxiliary Gym for the in-school field trip Plan the team building activities, movie, and luncheon Create and collect permission slips for students earning enough credits to attend Food Drive Director: Organize the food drive Confirm the dates of the food drive Communicate with Dublin Food Pantry Select and organize prizes for the food drive Canteen Director: Communicate with PTO president regarding theme of canteen Assist with all paperwork for canteens Set up and ensure Student Council members are signed up for all shifts needed for a canteen Work with PR Officer for promotions of canteen through posters and WKMS Canteen Concessions Director: Ensure Student Council members are signed up for all shifts during the canteen Accurate count of all pop and food at the beginning and end of the canteen Assist with deciding up on and ordering all food for the canteen Color Cycle Director: Ensure Color Cycle boxes are in convenient locations throughout the school Work with PR Officer to promote Color Cycle Box and prepare for mailing filled Color Cycle boxes Pop Tab Director: Plan annual Pop Tab Drive in March Work with PR officer to promote Pop Tab Drive Select and prepare prizes
