2 Executive Summary African American and Pacific Islander students are admitted at lower rates and enroll at higher rates, with the opposite being true for American Indian and White students (Figure 3) Enrolled students are most strongly represented just above the Admissions Index requirements for High School GPA and SAT score (Figures 6 & 7) Students with higher High School GPAs yield at lower rates, with the difference being larger with regards to SAT scores (Table 4, Figures 9 & 10) Geographic regions with relatively high density of Admitted-Not-Enrolled students and low density of Enrolled students include Dublin/Pleasanton, San Jose, and San Francisco (Figures 13 & 14) Introduction This research has been conducted in order to provide contextual information and analysis useful for evaluating and improving the effectiveness of First-Time Freshmen recruitment efforts. The focus of this report is on yield rates by originating high school, geographic region, student demographics, and academic preparedness. As a result of understanding the degree of recruitment effectiveness in the context of these variables, more informed choices can be made about directing resources to most effectively yield the best students at the highest rates. Also, this summary is intended to be useful for identifying additional questions for further study. Please note, Final Admission Status in this report refers to the most advanced admissions stage a potential student reaches in the admissions process. The stages are mutually exclusive. For example, a student who applies, is admitted, but does not enroll would be counted only among the Admits. This allows for an unduplicated headcount when looking at the entire pool, and provides information about rate-of-flow through the admissions funnel. 1 Summary of Applicants, Admits, and Enrolled First-Time Freshmen 1.1 Total Applicants, Admits, and Enrolled First-Time Freshmen Applicants, Admits, and Enrolled students for Fall 2009 and Fall 2012 are the focus of this summary. These are the two most recent quarters representing typical Fall term admission processing practices and enrollment patterns with few Chancellor s Office enrollment management constraints. In 2010 and 2011 different data management practices were employed to define an admitted student, and therefore these data cannot be combined with those from other years, as Table 1 illustrates. Fall 2009 Fall 2010* Fall 2011* Fall 2012 Total Applicants 8, % 10, % 11, % 13, % Total Admits 5, % 3, % 2, % 8, % Total Enrolled 1, % 1, % 1, % 1, % (Not mutually-exclusive categories) Table 1: Admissions Counts, Applicant/Admitted Yield Ratios, and Admitted/Enrolled Yield Ratios 1.2 Distribution by Demographics Falls 2009 and 2012 each saw large First-Time Freshmen classes (1,437 and 1,570). The proportions of Enrolled students has shifted somewhat across racial/ethnic categories, most notably with increases in Hispanic and African American students in Headcounts by Gender and Race/Ethnicity appear in Table 2. The same data are displayed graphically in Figure 2 as yield ratios Applicant-Admitted and Admitted-Enrolled. Figure 1 illustrates how the shape of the funnel is defined by the ratio of Applicants who are Admitted, and the ratio of Admitted students who Enrolled. 2

The overall shape representing high selectivity has a wide mouth, narrow waist, and straight stem. The converse is true for lower selectivity. 4

6 2 Final Admission Status and Yield by Academic Preparedness 2.1 Final Admission Status by High School GPA The density of students by high school GPA was plotted to examine the distributions of students based on their final admission status - Applicant, Admitted, or Enrolled. Fall 2009 and Fall 2012 have very similar profiles for each student type, but group sizes differ. Group statistics appear in Table 3. Admitted-Not-Enrolled students, on average, had higher GPAs than Enrolled students. Applied-Not-Admitted student appear to include two distinct groups: 1. under-prepared students (the majority) 2. very well-prepared students Better-prepared students were admitted in Fall 2012 versus Fall 2009, as evidenced by higher mean High School GPAs among Admitted students (t = 7.13***, df = 10,296) Enrolled Students in Fall 2009 and Fall 2012 were comparable on High School GPA and SAT. 8 2.3 High School GPA 1 and SAT Score by CA Residency and Final Admission Status High School GPA and SAT Score do not show signs of a strong correlation (r =.376, n = 10,483, p =.000); Despite being statistically significant, only 14% of the variation in SAT Scores can be explained by High School GPA (R 2 =.137) Including all Final Admission Statuses for Fall 2012, the 95% confidence interval for predicting a student s SAT score based on a High School GPA of 3.5 spans 615 points to 1,283 (See Figure 8) The Office of Planning and Institutional Research has found evidence that High School GPA is a better indicator of student retention and success than SAT score 2, which makes High School GPA a preferred indicator App Adm Enr 4 Non Res Non Res Non Res HighSchoolGPA Non Res Min Res Min Non Res Min Resident CSU Admissions Index Non Res Resident Non Res Min Res Min Non Res Min Resident CSU Admissions Index Non Res Resident Non Res Min Res Min Non Res Min Resident CSU Admissions Index Non Res Resident Fall 2009 Fall 2012 CA Residency Status CA Res Non Res 2 Res Min Res Min Res Min CSU Admissions Index CSU Admissions Index CSU Admissions Index SAT1600Score Figure 6: High School GPA by SAT Score by Final Admission Status 1 Lines in Figure 6 reflect CSU Eligibility Index for CA Residents and Non-Residents 2 June 13, 2012 Ad Hoc Report: Summary of Retention by Admission Type and Remediation Status for First-time Freshmen, 2007 to 2011 Fall Cohorts. Density for Enrolled students is indicated by concentric shapes, with the inner-most circle representing the highest density and progressively decreasing density out to the perimeter. The wide 95% confidence interval for predicting a single SAT score based on a student s High School GPA shows that the relationship is not strong. 4 HighSchoolGPA 3 2 n = 10, SAT1600Score Figure 8: Fall 2012 First-Time Freshmen High School GPA and SAT Score With Predicted SAT Score (Blue Line) & 95% Confidence Interval (Red Lines) at Each Level of High School GPA 10
