What is a Fraternity? A fraternity is a group of men who are part of a brotherhood built on common goals and aspirations that builds ties that last a lifetime. The members that form a fraternity share their efforts, friendship and knowledge with one another. Fraternities have been a part of college and university campuses since the late 18th-century. These organizations are referred to as Greek because their names consist of Greek letters that serve as a reminder of the group s founding values.

FSL Mission Statement The FGCU Fraternity and Sorority Community believes in respect and equality for all of its members, providing Brotherhood and Sisterhood through service, scholarship, and leadership opportunities that contribute to and improve the collegiate experience.

Anti-Hazing Policy Any action or situation which recklessly or intentionally endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for purposes including, but not limited to, initiation or admission into or affiliation with, or as a condition of continued membership in, a University registered group or organization. Hazing Report Form: studentservices.fgcu.edu/studentconduct Hazing Hotline: NOT-HAZE

Alcohol Policy The use of alcoholic beverages during the recruitment process is prohibited by both fraternity members and potential new members. Fraternity members and PNM s will be held accountable by the Interfraternity Council and the University if found consuming alcohol during this process. IFC and OSI will ensure that this is an alcohol free recruitment process.

Financial Commitment There is a financial commitment associated with joining a Greek organization. These fees go towards operating costs for the chapters, International fees, and social activities sponsored by the organization. Financial obligations differ by chapter and chapter dues are paid either each semester or once a year. Be sure that your student checks with chapter officers while going through the Recruitment process in terms of the financial obligations of membership.

Time Commitment Students should consider time commitments when joining any organization on campus. Fraternity and sorority membership does require a commitment of time. You should count on your student participating in regular weekly chapter meetings (usually on Sunday) along with service projects, leadership programs, and social activities throughout the year. Like any activity, students need to strike a good balance with their commitments.

Fraternity Oversight Individual chapters elect officers to manage the day-to-day operations of the organization. These officers are assisted by a faculty or staff member who serves as the on-campus advisor, as well as a alumni member who serves as the alumni advisor. Each chapter has a national headquarters, which offers support, advice, and direction through paid professional staff and regional volunteers.

Role of Parents/Guardians Students need support throughout the recruitment and new member education process. Be supportive and learn as much as you can about Greek life by asking questions of your student as he meets members in fraternities. Fraternities and sororities are different on every campus. Groups that may have been strong on the campus where you attended school may not have the same reputation at Florida Gulf Coast University. Encourage your son to choose the group that he feels the most comfortable joining. Talk to your son beforehand about the financial obligation. Allow your student to take responsibility and make their own decisions, as it helps students mature and take ownership over their experiences. Be involved, but don't take the responsibility away from your student. Hold them accountable.
