2 What do I need to do to make sure my child is allocated a place at a secondaryschool? Parents can name up to 4 preferences on their Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF). Parents of pupils who have sat the grammar school entry test will be informed of the assessment decision before they name preferences on the SCAF (Secondary Common Application Form)

3 Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF) Parents need to submit their application online A copy must be sent into school for checking ( this is important as I would like to ensure that there are no errors made with allocations)

4 Supplementary Information Forms Academies/VA/Foundation Schools can require parents to provide additional information (on a supplementary form) but only where this is necessary to apply their oversubscription criteria (e.g. religious affiliation). Archbishops test and religious affiliation Canterbury Academy - if you would like a place children must sit the banding test. There is also an audition for Music places(15%) St Anselm s religious affiliation baptism certificate and church form completed Sandwich Technology for a technological aptitude test (10%) Those schools requiring a supplementary form are clearly identified in the admissions guide (SIF Form required). The form should be collected from and returned directly to the secondary school. Please remember to keep a copy and date when the form was handed in.

5 Changing Preferences Once parents have made their preferences, local authorities will not allow them to be changed without a genuine reason for doing so for example, if the family has recently moved address If this change of circumstance happens you need to deal with admissions directly

6 Allocating Places The LA operates an Equal Preference scheme. The LA tells secondary schools who has applied for places, not whether they were named first, second, third or fourth, and the schools place their applicants in a rank order based on their oversubscription criteria. All applicants must be ranked, even if the school is very oversubscribed or undersubscribed. The published criteria determine which children can be offered places. Please put the school you would like your child to attend first on the form.

7 Allocating Places If your child has been assessed suitable for grammar then you will need to out your chosen grammar school first. If your child has not reached the required threshold in the Kent Test but you would like to appeal for a place at a grammar school through the parent appeal process, please name the grammar school further down the form and your chosen alternative High School as the first. Remember you can only appeal for a school which is named on the SCAF. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT UNTIL YOU HAVE DISCUSSED THIS WITH US AT PARENT CONSULTATIONS

10 How do I make an informed choice? 1.Discuss this with your child 2.Think about what your child is like will the school provide for this. e.g. sports/ art 3. Consider where friends are going, but don't let it dictate your whole decision. 4. Don't rule out a school for one thing look at the bigger picture

11 5. When you go on a visit, ask questions. 6. Try to get your child s opinion will they be able to be nurtured and flourish there?

12 Thursday 12 th October 2017 Monday October 16 th and Tuesday 17 th 2017 Assessment decision sent to parents (postal will arrive on 13 th October) Parent consultations with Year 6 teachers and Miss Chinnadurai ( 6SM 16 th, 6JH 17 th ) Wednesday 18 th October 2017 Tuesday 31 st October 2017 Thursday 1 st March 2018 Last day of Term 1 please hand in any paper SCAFs to the school office ( recommendation is to apply online) National closing day for SCAFs if applying online (make sure you hand a copy into the school office) National Offer Day. Offer letters posted first class online applications can be accessed at 4 pm ( Friday 2 nd March 2018 postal offers)

13 Friday 16 th March 2018 Date by which you should ask to go on a school s waiting list Friday 16 th March 2018 Date by which you choose to accept a place or refuse a place Thursday 29 th March 2018 Wednesday 25 th April 2018 April to June 2018 Date by which you should lodge an appeal with any school you have named on your CAF Reallocation of places by KCC; after this date the schools will reallocate on waiting lists as places arise Admissions appeals held

The order in which a parent named the schools on the SCAF only matters if more than one of them could offer a place. In that case, the LA looks back at the original order and offers a place at whichever of them the parent named highest on the form.
