1 MPP POSITION DESCRIPTION Department: Student Affairs Position Reports To: AVP of Student Engagement & Equity/Title I Coordinator Working Title: Dean of Students Classification: Administrator III Time Base: Full time Range Code: 1 Class Code: 3306 Exempt or Non Exempt: Exempt Position Number: Last Update: MPP Job Code: S022 PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Dean of Students reports to the Associate Vice President, Student Engagement & Equity/Title I Coordinator and is responsible for the leadership and direction of Dean of Students Office programs and staff as well as Student Life & Leadership via the Director, Student Life & Leadership (MPP II). The Dean serves as a Deputy Title I Coordinator with delegated authority for student to student Title I concerns. In addition the Dean oversees the implementation, assessment and ongoing refinement of a campus wide model for co curricular education in partnership with Housing and Residential Education, Associated Students, Inc., Student Health & Counseling Services, The University Student Union, The Career Center and other campus collaborators. The Dean serves as a campus wide resource regarding matters of students rights and responsibilities. FUNCTIONAL OVERSIGHT/MANAGEMENT: Ensures the effective management of activities and programs in the Dean of Students Office (DOS) including Student Conduct Administration, CARE/Behavior Intervention Team/Cougar Care Network, Student Outreach and Referral, and working with students regarding their options for filing complaints via the Student Grade Appeal, Student Grievance, or Disability Support Services complaint policies and procedures. Additionally, the Dean of Students serves as a Deputy Title I Coordinator overseeing the administration of student to student complaint investigation, interim remedies/support, and student conduct adjudication to ensure compliance to the letter and spirit of federal and state laws and guidance. In all student interactions, the Dean of Students holds fundamental responsibility for ensuring students rights and responsibilities are upheld. The Dean of Students provides general leadership to Student Life & Leadership (SLL) via the Director of SLL. SLL includes Orientation and new student programs, student organization recognition and advisement, student leadership development programs including but not limited to the Tukwut Leadership Circle, multicultural programs, and fraternity and sorority life. The Dean of Students personally, and via the Director of SLL, ensures that strategic plans for DOS and SLL programs are aligned with the myriad university strategic priorities and are assessed for learning and engagement outcomes. The Dean of Students leads division wide and campus wide implementation, assessment and ongoing refinement of the CSUSM model for integrated co curricular education grounded in best practices in student education as well as University learning outcomes,. The Dean ensures individual program assessments in areas of responsibility, as related to the cocurricular model, and contributes to university wide assessment such as Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation. The Dean of Students serves as Student Affairs representative on emergency preparedness efforts for the campus. Coordinates information from the Chancellor s office, and responds to special initiatives and programs as dictated by new executive orders, regulatory requirements, and/or contractual obligations. Serves as the Student Affairs representative on university committees upon request. SUPERVISION OF OTHERS: a. Director, Student Life and Leadership (Administrator II) b. Associate Dean of Students (MPP I) c. CARE Manager (MPP I) d. Associate Director of Operations (SSP III) e. Administrative Support Coordinator, (ASC I) PURPOSE AND NATURE OF WORK RELATIONSHIPS: Daily/weekly interaction with students, and with Student Affairs leadership teams, Associated Students Inc., Risk Management, HR, University Police, Academic Senate, Legal Counsel, faculty and other campus leadership to gather/provide information and to collaborate on various issues. As needed interaction with auxiliaries and departments across campus to provide and gather information, collaborate, and resolve problems. REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: 1. List education and experience required a. Master s s degree in related field plus eight years of progressively responsible work experience in student life programs including significant responsibility for development and assessment of programs designed to meet student learning outcomes within the boundaries of university policies and risk management best practices, which includes a minimum of four years leading and/or supervising the work of others; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
3 b. Preferences i. Doctoral or terminal degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Organizational Leadership, or related field. ii. Work experience in an academic setting, ideally Public Higher Education. 2. List knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position. Leadership / Vision: a. Ability to demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the University community, and establish and maintain cooperative and effective relations with University employees, students, and the public. b. Ability to establish a clear and understandable vision for the department of Student Life and Leadership, engage the university community in the implementation of the vision, and build the operational components to execute the vision d. This position is subject to a background check including, but not limited to, employment verification, education verification, reference checks and criminal record checks.
