2 Invitation Dear Professional Colleague It gives us immense pleasure to inform you that a Two-Day National Workshop on Prospects of Consortia for North East India Library is being organized by the Department of Library and Information Science, (Assam) in collaboration with Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) on March 17-18, We have planned this workshop to address certain vital issues like MOU among member libraries, Conversion to a standard common database adopting preferably OSS KOHA, Services to be extended after implementation, Negotiation with the publishers for their inputs, Generation of resources for its establishment and continuity. We would like to extend our cordial invitation to you to be part of this occasion. The participants are sure to enjoy a warm hospitality besides an opportunity to get a glimpse of the rich culture, ethnical heritage and beautiful scenario of the state of Assam. 3 The Gauhati University The Gauhati University is the oldest and largest University of north east India established in The University has forty one Post graduate departments, an institute of distance and open Learning and a constituent law College in the main campus. The University campus is a sprawling scenic and scenery one with an inspiring, peaceful environment developed in a township named after the legendary freedom fighter and great leader Gopinath Bordoloi. The K.K. Handiqui Library, the central library of the university has been recognized as a manuscript resource and a conservation centre by the Government of India. The University is at a distance of 10 kilometers from the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi Airport at Borjhar on the National Highway No. 37, 14 kilometers from Guwahati railway station and 5 kilometers away from Kamakhya Railway station and 10 kilometers from the heart of Guwahati city. Department of Library & Information Science The Department of Library & Information science, GU started in 1966 with one year Post Graduate Course leading to BLibSc (later BLISc) and in 1978 a one year MLibSc (later MLISc) was introduces. In 1986, the syllabus was thoroughly revised accommodating the contemporary issues in the field. As per UGC guidelines; an integrated two year MLISc course was introduces in the year 2001 with four semesters. Recently, the credit and grading systems is introduced in the examination system. The department is conducting PhD programme and faculties are actively engaged in research works. Numbers of seminars and workshop at the National and Regional levels are being organized by the department science its inception. The department can be reached at About Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, New Delhi (IGNCA) is a premier governmentfunded arts organization in India. It is an autonomous institution under the Union Ministry of Culture. It was established in the memory of Indira Gandhi, the late Indian Prime Minister is visualised as a centre encompassing the study and experience of all the arts each form with its own integrity, yet within a dimension of mutual interdependence, interrelated with nature, social structure and cosmology. The IGNCA was launched on 19 November 1985 by the late Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi at a function where the symbolism of the components was clearly articulated at different levels. The goals of IGNCA are to serve as a major resource centre for Indian arts, especially written, oral and visual source materials; to conduct research on the arts and humanities, and to publish reference works, glossaries, dictionaries and encyclopedias; to establish a tribal and folk arts division with a core collection for conducting systematic scientific studies and live presentations; to provide a forum for dialogue through performances, exhibitions, multi-media projections, conferences, seminars and workshops on traditional and contemporary Indian arts; to foster dialogue between the arts and current ideas in philosophy, science and technology, with a view toward bridging the gap in intellectual understanding between modern sciences and arts and culture; to evolve models of research programmes and arts administration pertinent to the Indian ethos; to elucidate the formative and dynamic factors in the complex web of interactions between

4 diverse social strata, communities and regions; to interact with other national and international institutions; and to conduct related research in the arts, humanities and culture. Two Day National Workshop on Prospects of Consortia for North East India Library The two days national workshop is organized to get a working plan for the consortia of North East India libraries and NEILIBNET. The following issues are chosen for discussion in the workshop. MOU among member libraries Conversion to a standard common database preferably for KOHA Services to be extended after implementation, Negotiation with the publishers for their inputs Generation of resources for its establishment and continuity. Who should participate? The workshop is meant for senior LIS professionals working in universities, colleges, public and special libraries and LIS faculties especially from North East India. Important dates Workshop date March 17-18, 2016 Last date of receipt of registration form March 10, 2016 A brief write up on the present status of the library the applicant is working is to be enclosed along with the registration form. Registration is free for all the participants. Accommodation Participants from North East India will be paid three tier AC fare from the nearest railway station or actual bus fare to Gauhati University on back.
