1 NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ANDHRA PRADESH SRI VASAVI ENGINEERING COLLEGE CAMPUS, PEDATADEPALLI TADEPALLIGUDEM , WEST GODAVARI DIST., ANDHRA PRADESH, INDIA Report on the Observance of Vigilance Awareness Week, 2018 In pursuit of the vision of the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), Government of India, the National Institute of Technology Andhra Pradesh observed Vigilance Awareness Week from 29 th October to 3 rd November 2018 with the theme Eradicate Corruption Build a New India. The Awareness Week was observed on both the campuses of the institute: Sri Vasavi Engineering College campus and Akula Gopayya campus. The institute, as mandated by the commission, devised a few strategies to encourage all the stakeholders to collectively participate in the prevention of, and the fight against corruption and also to raise awareness in public life. The institute conducted activities relevant to the theme both within and outside the campus to promote integrity, transparency, and accountability in academic and social life. The highlights of the activities are given below: Day 1 (29 October 2018): Launch of Vigilance Awareness Week and Integrity Pledge The observance of the Vigilance Awareness Week was launched by Prof. C. Surya Prakash Rao, the honourable Director of the institute, at the main building portico of Sri Vasavi Engineering College campus, and it was followed by Integrity Pledge. The director first welcomed all the faculty members and the staff of the institute present on the occasion and administered the Integrity Pledge to them. In his short speech, Prof. Rao reiterated that probity and transparency are the two key parameters to be followed by one and all. He mentioned that NIT Andhra Pradesh stands for transparency and ethical standards and requested all the stakeholders to maintain that spirit to subsequently contribute to nation building. He finally thanked all the persons present on the occasion. The activities were conducted on both the campuses of the institute. Dr. Dinesh P Shankar Reddy, the coordinator of Akula Gopayya campus, and Dr. Veeresh Kumar G B, Associate Dean, Student Affairs, were the faculty in-charges of the Day One activities at Akula 1

2 Gopayya campus and at Sri Vasavi Engineering College campus respectively. The employees also took e-pledge and encouraged others to do the same by following the link provided by CVC, Government of India. Prof. C. 4 Day 2 (30 October 2018): Walkathon Race The institute organised outreach activities such as a walkathon race from Tanuku Bus Stop to Bus Stand via Tadepalligudem Railway Station. Faculty members, staff and students actively participated in the walkathon race. The director of the institute also joined them in the walkathon race which had a great visibility and mass appeal in the town of Tadepalligudem. Prof. C. 6 Administering Integrity Pledge to the participants of walkathon race Day 3 (31 October 2018): Rashtriya Ekta Diwas Pledge and Unity Run The institute also organised Rashtriya Ekta Diwas which was followed by a Unity Run to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on Wednesday, October 31, The director, Prof. C. Surya Prakash Rao, offered floral tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and flagged off the mini-marathon that started from the main building of Sri Vasavi Engineering College campus and went up to Pedatadepalli Entrance Arch and thereafter it returned to end at the main building of the institute, covering a distance of approximately 4km. 8 The faculty members reminded the students of the sacrifice and contributions of the Iron Man in the country s freedom struggle as well as in unifying the nation. The students were also made aware of the objective of Unity Run, i.e., to make citizens understand the importance of unity of all sections and to maintain regional cooperation. This activity had a huge turnout and the event proved to be ideal for spreading awareness about Sardar Patel s contribution to Indian history. 10 Day 4 (1 November 2018): Guest Lecture and Various Competitions To commemorate this celebration, a special lecture on Eradicate Corruption Build a New India was organised in the MBA Seminar Hall of Sri Vasavi Engineering College campus of NIT Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, November 1, The lecture was delivered by Sri Bantu Atchuta Rao, Regional Vigilance and Enforcement Officer, Eluru. Faculty members, staff and students in a large number attended the lecture. Prof. Amba Prasad Rao, i/c Registrar, NIT Andhra Pradesh, and other senior professors were also present on the occasion. Prof. Amba Prasad Rao welcomed the esteemed guests for the event and addressed the gathering. He thanked Prof. C. Surya Prakash Rao, the Director of the institute, for his motivation and support given to conduct various activities as part of Vigilance Awareness Week. Sri Bantu Atchuta Rao informed the audience about the structure of the CVC at the centre as well as at the state level, the mechanism of its functioning and the resource centers. Furthermore, he focused on the role of citizens in imparting a fair and self-sustained mechanism for the corruption-free functioning of all the government organisations. He reiterated that the aware citizens can thrust the system towards a corruption-free society with collective efforts. Sri Rao spoke in detail about different measures being taken up by the law enforcement authority to prevent corrupt practices from all walks of life. He also expressed the bottlenecks in the system, which may deter prevention of corruption. He emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability and mentioned that Andhra Pradesh is one of the leading states in law enforcement. The talk was followed by an insightful discussion wherein the participants expressed their opinion on the issues common people face in their day-to-day life and how they can curb corruption with awareness and right feedback to CVC. The interaction revolved around the main theme Eradicate Corruption Build a New India. The participants found the lecture very informative and interactive and benefitted from it. 12 Faculty, staff, and students during the discussion The institute also conducted various competitions such as essay writing, elocution, and debates at both the campuses of the institute for the students on the aforesaid theme of the Vigilance Awareness Week. Dr. Soumya Jose, Assistant Professor and HoD, School of Humanities and Management, and Dr. Deepak Kumar were the faculty in-charges for various competitions at Sri Vasavi Engineering College campus and at Akula Gopayya campus respectively. More than a hundred students from different engineering branches participated actively in the competitions. Eighty-three students participated in the essay competition alone wherein the students were asked to write on the topic Eradicate Corruption: Build a New India in 20 minutes of time. The team members of the selection committee of essay competition found all the essays so good that it was difficult for them to select the top three essays as winners. The students in their essays have brilliantly suggested a few anti-corruption measures and also given their ideas on vigilance issues, systematic improvements and good practices which need to be adopted for wider dissemination and awareness. To encourage the students and to disseminate the students ideas of their essays, Dr. Deepak Kumar, faculty in the department of English, is working on those essays to bring out a special issue of journal/newsletter to make them available for the public to benefit from the young minds. 14 Student participating in elocution State Bank of India also collaborated with NIT Andhra Pradesh in conducting these competitions at Akula Gopayya campus and decided to give prizes to the winners of the competitions. Mr. T. Kranti Kiran, Branch Manager, SBI Pedatadepalli branch, and Mr. Ravi Kanth BK, Branch Manager, SBI, Satyavathi Nagar branch, were present on the occasion and also delivered a short speech on the issues related to anti-corruption. 15 Day 5 (2 November 2018): Games and Sports Games and sports are an integral part of students life at NIT Andhra Pradesh and the students believe in the old saying All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. As part of the Vigilance Awareness Week, the SAS staff of the institute organised various games and sports to present students with opportunities for fun, socialisation, forming better peer relationships, and physical fitness. The faculty members and the non-teaching staff of the institute were also invited to attend the different games and sports to encourage the participants. It was organised after 4pm on Monday without disturbing the classroom teaching and the regular academic activities in the institute. Volleyball was organised at Akula Gopayya campus for the B.Tech first-year students, and Basketball was organised at Vasavi Engineering College Campus for the students of B.Tech second, third and fourth year. Records of their performances of the day were specifically observed and kept in record and the information regarding winners would be widely announced later.
