1 Collection List What is it? In a time of shrinking educational budgets, Gallery on Wheels provides a wonderful way for students to interact with and learn from art. Students will discuss Academic Standard based topics and have a chance to visualize concepts they are already learning in the classroom. Collections are presented by Museum Educators that will come to your school and interact with your students. Last year over 16,000 students participated in Gallery on Wheels; they explored art and other topics through a variety of diverse collections. With it being such a popular program sign up soon to get your desired dates. How much does it cost? Thanks to our sponsors it is FREE to you. We ask to see as many students as possible during the visit and generally require at least 150 students for a visit. Please coordinate with other teachers so that our visit is as productive as possible. John James Audubon: Art and Observation and Science Grades PK-8 Students will explore how John James Audubon used observation to explore his artistic and scientific process. By looking at Audubon and his work students discuss the use of observation to understand their world. Environments Natural World Documentation The 5 Senses Students will view a short movie and write descriptive words of what they are observing. Then they will get a chance to draw a 3-D object and achieve a level of detail and perspective. If time allows students will share their observations with the group. Robert Scott Duncanson: The Best Landscape Painter in the West and African American History Grades 2-12 Students will learn and explore the life of Robert Scott Duncanson one of the first internationally acclaimed African American Artist in the United State. In looking at these works students will discuss basic art principles along with the concepts behind Duncanson s work. The time period of pre and post civil war and what Duncanson dealt with as an African American will be discussed as well. Style and Technique Still Life, Portraiture, Landscape African American History Pre and Post Civil War Students will create a landscape they are familiar with and how they interact with it.
2 Charles Willson Peale: The Man and His Museum, American History, and Language Arts Grades 2-12 Students will learn and explore the life of Charles Willson Peale who was not only an artist but the father of museums in this country. In looking at Peale s life and work students will discuss basic art principles along with the history and influential individuals during early American History. Style and Technique Portraiture American History Revolutionary War Students will chose an historic object they feel should have been in Peale s Museum. Then write a museum label or item description for their object including what would make it interesting to viewers. American Modern Design and Language Arts Students will explore how and why objects are designed. By looking at the design of a variety of everyday objects students will observe and discuss the functionality of them and why the artist made the choices they did. Materials Movement in Art Students will explore and discuss how and why artist show movement in their artwork, and learn how to create movement in their own artwork. Student Art This collection is designed to inspire students to explore the visual arts and appreciate work created by their peers. Students will explore a variety of work created by 3rd graders to high school students. Students will create their own American Design and will write what makes their design interesting, innovative and unique. Students will use the ideas and techniques discussed to creating art work that has movement.
3 Artistic Detective and Language Arts Grades PK-5 This exhibit is designed to teach students to look for visual elements to help develop a story. After looking at several images, discussing the 5 senses, descriptive words, exaggeration, and action. Visual Literacy is utilized to help students think about narratives and cause and effect. Language Arts Scholastic Art Awards Grades 7-12 This collection is designed to inspire new students to participate in The Scholastics Art and Writing Awards, which provide area scholarships, purchase awards, and is great preparation for college portfolios. Hands- on: Students will create a drawing showing what would happen before or after in a narrative based on one of the pieces of art they have seen and discussed. Art Inspiring Writing and Language Arts Grades 3-12 This exhibit is designed to help young authors think of creative, and descriptive writing ideas. The collection includes several Kadir Nelson illustrations, thought provoking contemporary art, historical photographs, and more. After viewing the art, students get a chance at a hands on activity where they will use the Art to inspire their own story. Bike Shop: Imagination on Wheels Grades PK-12 This collection is designed to inspire students to explore the visual arts through the bicycle, by wowing them with works by local artists. Hands on: Students will design their own unique bicycle and write about what makes it interesting.
4 Children of Burma and Social Studies This exhibit explores what life is like for the children of Burma. Students will learn to experience these photographs through all of their five senses. The art will allow students to compare their lives to those of children in Burma. Art and Expression Roles of Citizens in Society Historic Fort Wayne and Grades 2-8 This collection is designed to introduce local history through beautiful large format photographs. Narrative Writing Ideas The Great Art Overview This collection is designed to introduce students to a variety art mediums, discussing basic art terms and concepts. This diverse collection appeals to and can be adapted to a variety of grades. Various Narratives including Cultural Folklore Patterns Beautifully Scientific and Science Grades 5-12 The collection is designed to connect art and science into one presentation. This beautiful collection of electron microscope images will inspire students to search for visual clues and discover each object using the scientific method. Scientific Inquiry Identifying objects within Abstract Art Resolve conflicting viewpoints by using logical thinking Technology and Science Reasoning and Uncertainty Constancy of Change
5 Sk8 Park: Careers in Art Careers and Culture This collection is designed to introduce students to a variety of art and careers that people interested in art and skateboarding could pursue. For example: did you know that skateboard designers make $50,000 a year, or that you could design skate parks for a living? Explore the wonderfully textured and painted boards by local artist, Lawton Park Skate Park Blueprints, and photographs. Narrative Texture Patterns Freedom for All and American History This collection is designed to introduce the Heroes of the Civil Rights movement. Students will learn more about how these people changed America, through these powerful image Black History U.S. History Individuals and Society (Roles of Citizens) Writing Ideas Collections that have this logo are only available in Power Point. All Gallery on Wheels are available as Power Points. Please let us know if you would prefer Power Point or actual artwork when you schedule. Collections that have this logo with them have a hands on activity at the end of the presentation.
