1 A SUMMER OF MASTERWORKS RELATED EVENTS A Century of Grace: 19 th -Century Masterworks from the Dahesh Museum of Art, New York May 18 August 5, 2007 Master Drawings from the Yale University Art Gallery June 1 August 12, 2007 The Blanton Museum of Art is offering a wide range of programs and events in conjunction with the exhibitions A Century of Grace: 19 th -Century Masterworks from the Dahesh Museum of Art, New York and Master Drawings from the Yale University Art Gallery. Unless otherwise noted, all programs are open to the public and are included in the price of museum admission. Admission on Thursdays is free and the museum is open until 8 p.m. May Curator s Tour: A Century of Grace Thursday, May 24, 12:30 p.m. Cheryl Snay, assistant curator of prints and drawings June B scene Friday, June 1, 6 11 pm Vive la France! Celebrate the opening of A Century of Grace at the museum s monthly art party. Experience an evening of all things French including wine and appetizers plus live music, tours of this stunning exhibition, art activities, and more. Cost: $5 members/$10 non-members. Tickets available at the museum. Hot Art Hip Kids Saturday, June 2, 1-4:30 pm Hot Art Hip Kids, the Blanton s family program, is the perfect way for you and your kids to experience and learn about works of art together through playing games. This Saturday, activities focus on A Century of Grace. Media sponsor: Yellow Book Members-only Tours Saturday, June 2 and Sunday, June 3, 1:30, 2:30, and 3:30 pm Tour the Blanton s new summer exhibitions: A Century of Grace and Master Drawings from the Yale University Art Gallery. Registration is not Thursday, June 7, 7 pm Free Public Lecture: Master Drawings from the Yale University Art Gallery with Suzanne Boorsch, curator of prints, drawings, and photographs at the Yale University Art Gallery Sunday, June 10, 2 pm Four centuries of European drawings by such masters as Bernini, Guercino, Lorrain, and Degas, are highlighted in this exhibition drawn from Yale s distinguished collection. The works show the evolution of the technique of drawing and spotlight major artistic movements. Join us for this free public lecture by Suzanne Boorsch. Guest Tour with Ellen Cunningham-Kruppa, Director, Kilgarin Center for Preservation of the Cultural Record, School of Information Thursday, June 14, 12:30 pm In conjunction with Master Drawings from the Yale University Art Gallery, Ellen Cunningham-Kruppa will discuss the various preservation issues that should be considered when amassing paper-based collections. Blanton Book Club Thursday, June 14, 6 pm Immerse yourself in the life of a different artist each month. The Blanton Book Club makes connections between the subject, idea, or theme to a work in the collection or special exhibition. This month read The Masterpiece by Emile Zola, a novel about the trials and tribulations of an artist working in the nineteenth century. Then explore works of art in A Century of Grace. 5 Free Public Lecture: The Nude and the Lewd: Alexandre Cabanel and The Birth of Venus with Lisa Small, associate curator, Dahesh Museum of Art Sunday, July 15, 2 pm Venus reclines provocatively on the crest of a wave, one arm slung over her head, her long hair trailing in the surf, and gazes dreamily at the viewer through half-opened eyes. At the Paris Salon in 1863, thousands of people came to gaze back at her, some captivated, others amused or outraged. In this lecture, Lisa Small will recount the fascinating history of Alexandre Cabanel s famed painting, The Birth of Venus, and explore why it was one of the most scandalous and widely reproduced paintings of the nineteenth-century.
