FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Helina Kebede, Marketing Specialist (315) Friday, May 25, 2012 Community Folk Art Center Summer Exhibition Opening The Unexpected Journey: Works By Beverly McIver And How I See the World: Works by Spencer McClay 2 June - 4 August 2012 (SYRACUSE, N.Y.)-- Our Summer 2012 exhibition, opening June 2, will feature North Carolina Central University professor and acclaimed artist Beverly McIver and California-based artist and activist Spencer McClay. These two artists offer different and refreshing perspectives that explore the effects of disability on their separate life journeys.
Although McIver and McClay cope with disability in different capacities McIver as a caregiver to her mentally disabled and epileptic sister and McClay as a developmentally disabled weaver they both create pieces that speak to the varied, personal emotions of their experiences. The Unexpected Journey: Works by Beverly McIver is a selection of paintings that chronicle her unpredictable and unexpected life with her sister, Renee. McIver became Renee s legal guardian when their mother passed away in Her works often depict their relationship and delves into the emotional and personal aspects of their journey. McIver s work is very emotional and intimate. She allows people into her life a rare quality among artists by documenting her personal life, CFAC s curator Jillian Nakornthap said. The emotions that she creates can only be experienced when in front of the piece. How I See the World: Works by Spencer McClay is a collection of vibrant hand-woven wall sculptures by an artist with a unique vision and sensibility for the materials he uses. McClay creates striking multi-textured, colorful pieces that are a blend of craft and artistry. He draws inspiration from his upbringing in New Orleans, and often incorporates recycled materials into his works. By presenting these two artists together, Community Folk Art Center hopes to initiate dialogue about a topic that is rarely discussed in our daily lives. The two artists compliment each other by displaying two different but equally personal vantage points of disability. I m delighted to display works by artists of different views and abilities. McClay is a nontraditional creative artist whose work is truly awe-inspiring. McIver s work offers a peek into an interesting relationship between the artist and the subject, CFAC s executive director Kheli Willetts said. Both artists artwork become more interesting when you understand their stories. Although this will be McClay s debut showing in New York, McIver is no stranger to the Central New York area. A documentary about her life as a caregiver and artist Raising Renee premiered in Syracuse last October. The opening reception for the exhibition will be on Saturday, June 2 from noon-2p.m and will include a live weaving demonstration by McClay at 1p.m. in the Herbert T. Williams gallery. In addition, we are hosting a film screening of Raising Renee on July 26. The Community Folk Art Center, founded in 1972, is a proud unit of the African American
Studies Department at Syracuse University. We are a beacon of artistry, creativity and cultural expression engaging the Syracuse community, the region and the world. Gallery Hours are Tuesday - Friday 10a.m. - 5p.m. and Saturday 11a.m. - 5p.m. For more information visit CommunityFolkArtCenter.org, follow us on or call (315) ARTIST BIOS: Spencer McClay Known for his hand-woven wall sculptures, McClay has shown extensively throughout Northern California including two solo exhibitions at Lincoln Arts Center and Center for the Arts. In 1996, the California Arts Council gave him a grant for his work in Art in Public Places program. His work has been featured in the Nevada County Gold Magazine in 2010 and the book, published in 1993, 20 th Century American Folk. McClay is heavily involved in his community and frequently donates work to organizations in his community including KVIE TV and Alta California Regional Center. Aside from his artistic merits, McClay serves on multiple boards including the Alta California Regional Center, FREED, a disability advocacy organization, Advocates for Developmentally Disabled and Neighborhood Center of the Arts. McClay is also an Advocate for People First of California, an organization run by and for people with learning difficulties to raise awareness of and campaign for the rights of people with learning difficulties. Beverly McIver Growing up as African American in Greensboro, North Carolina with her single mother and two older sisters (Renee and Roni, the middle sister), Beverly McIver was determined to move away from the town that was notorious for its racial tension. Her opportunity came when she was accepted to North Carolina Central University in Durham, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Painting and Drawing. From there, she went on to pursue a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). Since graduating from Penn State, she has been showing consistently throughout the United States, but it was not until the early 2000s that her career began to flourish. Her work has been exhibited in such institutions as North Carolina Museum, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. In addition, McIver has been the recipient of multiple grants and fellowships including the Creative Capital Project Grant and the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2007, her alma mater, NCCU, recognized her contributions to the arts by awarding with an honorary doctorate and later offered her a tenured art professorship at the university. Her work continues to garner acclaim and recently, she was featured in the New American Paintings in the article 40 Artists on Rise. In 2011, the documentary Raising Renee premiered across the country, including Syracuse and was the inspiration for this exhibition.
SPENCER McCLAY Mardi Gras: African Dancing, 2008 Mixed media fiber, 36 x 48 in. This piece is a mixture between McClay s two major influences African masquerades and Mardi Gras and displays his skilled use of texture and recycled materials. This piece incorporates a wide range of recycled materials, including: Mardi Gras beads, fishing nets, and salvaged sheets and rugs.
BEVERLY McIVER Can You Hear My Silent Scream?, 2004 Oil on canvas, 38 x 40 in. This piece embodies the highly personal and emotional nature of McIver s work. Here she captures her sister s frustration because of her inability to express herself and communicate her pain to others a common struggle for people with mental disabilities.
