ABOUT Generously supported by Bei Shan Tang Foundation, the Museum Professionals Training Workshop ( the Workshop ) seeks to provide short-term on-the-job training to mid-level museum practitioners in China, Taiwan, Macau and Hong Kong. The program aims to expose our participants to the global scenario of museum operation and to create an exchange platform for professionals and scholars in the field. Since its inception in 2013, the workshop has earned wide recognition for its combination of specialist seminars, field trips to museums in Hong Kong and abroad, as well as its micro-exhibition proposal presentation sessions. Over the years, the programme has inspired not only positive feedbacks from our participants and speakers, but also exhibition collaborations among participating museums. 2
STRUCTURE Talks and Visits in Hong Kong(6 Days) Talks by senior specialists, case studies, discussions and visits to Hong Kong museums and art event. Presentation (1 Day) Participants group presentations on a micro-exhibition proposal, followed by peer commentary, discussion and guests commentary sessions. Preparation prior to the start of the workshop is advised. Group list will be announced in advance. Overseas Field Trip(6 Days) After the Hong Kong program has ended, a field trip to an overseas destination will be arranged to visit the museums and exchange with museum professionals there. 3
PARTICIPANTS FEEDBACK The workshop has dealt with case studies in curating and collections management with a combination of discussion, field trip, hands-on exercises and peer commentary sessions. The diversity of approach has enriched the learning experience and resulted in a refreshed conception of curatorship. (Jiang Jie, Chongqing China Three Gorges Museum) We benefited hugely from the guests remarkable sharing. There are no standard answers for several topics, we can however approach the truth through continuous debate. (Li Dong, Shandong Museum) I realized the impartible relationship between exhibition design and curatorship. Designers should study the objects and more importantly, communicate well with the curators. The outcome will definitely be better if designers participate in the initial planning stage. (Zhang Chao, National Art Museum of China) The programme has been very intense: in day time, we busied ourselves in shifting between the Chinese and English contexts and absorbing different points of view through continuous exchanges; while at night, we had discussions and prepared the presentation with our groupmates. Exhausting indeed, but also very rewarding. ( Han Xiaojie, Lushun Museum) Since I did not have much knowledge about Mokpo before going there for field visit, I am very surprised after visiting four high-quality museums there. The exhibition of the remains of the sunken ship in the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage is impressive, particularly with the assistance of elements like viewing deck, animations and background music. (Yu Chiu Leona, Art Promotion Office, Hong Kong) 4
PARTNERS ORGANIZER Founded in 1963, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is a forward-looking comprehensive research university with a global vision and a mission to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West. As a top university in Hong Kong and Asia, CUHK aims to nurture students with both specialized knowledge and wisdom for life. The education experience here is distinguished by a flexible credit unit system, a college system, bilingualism and multiculturalism. There are general education courses to broaden students' perspectives and develop in them the ability to face the challenges of contemporary society. CUHK undertakes a wide range of research programmes in many subject areas and the University's insistence on the highest standards of research has won it an enviable research reputation. Founded in 1971, the Art Museum serves the local community and beyond by collecting, preserving, researching and exhibiting a wide range of Chinese art and artifacts. It promotes the excellence of both its permanent and loan collections of Chinese art through scholarly endeavours and outreach efforts. As a university museum, it provides a direct and sustained access to original Chinese works of art. With different University faculties it also advocates interdisciplinary approaches to the study of Chinese art. The collection of fifteen thousand works of art was developed over four decades. The acquisition of the late Jen Yu-wen collection in 1973 formed the core of the Art Museum s original collection, which consisted of over one thousand paintings and calligraphy from the Ming period to the mid-20 th century. Since then, gifts from generous donors have continuously augmented the holdings, offering a comprehensive overview of China s artistic heritage from the Neolithic period to the 21 st century. Rare rubbings from the Song period, calligraphy from the Song to Qing, Guangdong paintings, Yixing Zisha ware, export porcelain and private kiln ware, ancient seals, and the Sheng Xuanhuai Archive are among the highlights of the collection. In 2016, eight pieces of ancient rubbings from the museum s collection, all donated by Bei Shan Tang, were listed on the National Catalogue of Precious Ancient Books, which is the first time that items from a Hong Kong institution has been included. 5
SPONSOR Bei Shan Tang Foundation (the "Foundation") was founded by the late Dr. Lee Jung Sen in 1985, a distinguished philanthropist in Hong Kong known for his support of Chinese art and culture. Dr. Lee was a long time supporter of initiatives in the field of Chinese art at many universities, research institutions, museums and cultural organizations around the world. The primary mission of the Foundation is to promote Chinese art and culture and to support education. In this connection, it organizes and administers exchange programmes, forums and training for museum professionals as well as providing financial support for programmes in Chinese art and culture organized by museums, universities, schools and NGOs. The Foundation also provides financial support to educational institutions as well as funding scholarships for students principally from Hong Kong. 6
