2 HENDERSON STATE UNIVERSITY SUMMER INTENSIVE TEACHER WORKSHOP The Henderson State University Summer Intensive Studio Workshop is a week long, studio intensive professional development opportunity for teachers in the state of Arkansas. Participants engage in a variety of studio art workshops for 30 hours culminating in an exhibit in the Russell Fine Arts gallery. The workshop offers 30 hours of professional development through the South Arkansas Math and Science STEM Center. Monday, June 25-8:00am - Participants go directly to their first session Daily 8:00am to 10:00am - Morning courses I Daily - 10:05am to 12:05am - Morning courses II Daily - 12:10am to 1:10pm - Lunch Daily 1:15pm to 3:15pm Session III June 29-9:00am to 10:00am - Summer Intensive Studio Gallery Exhibit in the Russell Fine Arts Gallery and completion of the workshop. Session Descriptions ipad Illustration- Digital Lab (RFA 143) - ipads have become a powerful tool for artists and illustrators since the development of the ipad Pro and Apple Pencil. Participants will learn how visual arts professionals are using the tool to make high quality work. We will discuss art apps, techniques, and will create some amazing illustrations using the versatile Procreate application. ipads are provided. No experience is necessary, as we will cover the most basic operations of the ipad. Discover how wonderful it can be to draw on the ipad! Japanese Woodcut (RFA 144) Join David Warren for an introduction to Japanese printmaking techniques. You will work on Shina wood using traditional Japanese tools to create your own print. This is a great opportunity to learn this wonderful technique! Illustrator Surface Pattern Design- Digital Lab (RFA 143) - Kasten Searles will lead participants in creating seamless repeating pattern designs. We will use Adobe Illustrator to create beautiful pattern repeats that can be easily transferred to fabric, wallpaper, and apparel. This course requires NO previous Adobe Illustrator knowledge

3 and will cover a basic intro to illustrator for those that need it. Students will learn the basics of creating complex repeating illustrations and discuss how to print work to fabric, apparel, and objects. Our digital creations will become large color prints at the end of the workshop, but have the potential to be much more! Modern and Contemporary Art (RFA 241) - This Art History-focused course emphasizes the artistic, historical, and cultural contexts in which Modern and Contemporary art can be understood and appreciated. We will examine the rise of the -isms, abstraction, conceptual art, and post-modernism. We will also discuss ways to explore Modern and Contemporary themes and subjects with students at all grade levels, and formulate 2 specific lesson plans based on our discussion of the above-listed themes. Drawing Fundamentals (RFA 234) Get back in the college drawing studio with Kathy Strause. This class will reinforce your fundamentals and challenge you to improve your skills. The exercises will concentrate on contour drawings, value studies, and other traditional drawing techniques. 3D Felting (RFA 152) - The workshop will concentrate on processes needed to make 3- dimensional items. Students will make an art hat or a sculpture. Felt making is the oldest fiber process, dating back at least 3000 years. Ice caves in Russia have given us the best pieces from the past. Felt was and is still made by nomads in Russia, Tibet and Mongolia. Join Barbara Cade and create amazing felt sculptures! Studio Lighting (RFA 236) - This course will teach you the basics of using studio light. Learn to make professional headshots, portraits, and experimental photos in the studio. Perfect for people with some knowledge of their camera and Photoshop. Cyanotypes (Art Annex) - Learn how to print photographic images with the power of the sun! This course teaches you how to use the historic cyanotype process to make unique blue-print images on paper and fabric. This is a hands-on course for all levels. Ceramics part I and II (Art Annex) Come down to the Ceramic studio and work with a variety of clay techniques. The goal is to walk away from the sessions with a finished work of art and get a basic understanding of the potential role ceramics play in a classroom. This session will be divided in two and taught by Aaron Calvert and Summer Bruch. Hand weaving and Natural Dyes (RFA 241) - This course introduces participants to several different hand-weaving techniques and to the use of plant-based and natural dyes. At the completion of the course, participants will have produced several dyed and woven works including one large wall hanging and will also have gained insight into the historical and cultural contexts in which the fiber arts can be understood. Oil Painting (RFA 234) Get back in the college painting studio with Kathy Strause. Beginners and experts can learn something new from the master!

4 Papermaking (Paper Studio) Over a thousand years old, the art of creating paper has fascinated artists for millennia. Come and create 2-d and 3-D paper forms with David Stoddard. This is a popular course with Henderson art students and a rare opportunity for artists around the state. Metal Jewelry (Art Annex) Join Dominique Simmons and Nancy Dunaway as they teach metal jewelry fundamentals. Participants will work with metal jewelry tools and learn techniques they can bring back to their classroom. Each participant will create a unique metal jewelry piece during the workshop. Note: Space for 20 participants.
