1 THE CRUSADER KALEIDOSCOPE Volume 5, No. 5 February 25, 2013 Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. - 1 Corinthians 10:31 Art Institutes to Visit LHNW March 5: Parents Welcome to Attend On March 5th a representative from the Art Institutes, a series of art colleges throughout the country, will be speaking to the LHNW art classes throughout the day about different career paths one might take in the Arts. She will be presenting each period with her presentation tailored to the interests of the students in each of the hours. One of the big fears of many parents of children who are gifted in the arts is the potential of this talent for a future career. What most parents do not realize is that there are many creative careers for aspiring artists. Everything we use and wear and live in and drive has been designed by an artist. Careers in art are not limited to the standard painter or sculpture as many assume. Inside this issue: This is a great opportunity for parents to come and listen to the presentation and ask questions of someone who is well-versed in creative careers. We welcome you to join in on these presentations! If you want to sit in class with your son or daughter - great! If you would rather sit in on a different period to spare you child the mortification of being in class with them - great! Please take advantage of this great opportunity to hear about careers in the arts and to ask the questions that you need answered for both you and your child. I hope to see you on March 5th! 2 ART OPPORTUNITIES DEPARTMENT AND ALUMNI NEWS Logos Created for LCMS Conference Mr. Bruce Braun, Superintendent of Lutheran Schools in Michigan contacted us looking for people to submit designs for a logo for the Gospel Conference for education executives of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod this summer out in Napa, California. A number of NW artists entered numerous designs for the logo: Kayla Burton (1) Mr. Davis (4) Jacob Dreim (1) Lauren Schaenzle (1) Courntey Sharbaugh (3) Mr. Davis was fortunate enough to have had his logo selected for this conference. Mr. Braun sends his thanks to all who contributed designs. He thought there were many strong designs submitted! Joel Grothaus (class of 06) Art Exhibit On February 13, Detroit Country Day hosted the opening ceremonies for the Art exhibit. Works from all grade levels in Oakland County were highlighted and author/illustrator Brian Flocca spoke to the students/families about his work at the opening ceremonies. Students with work in the exhibit were able to enter a drawing for a number of prizes. This exhibit/ contest equates to district competition in sports, with winning works selected to move on to Lansing for further judging. This year there were 160 entries and only 18 will be selected to move on to the next round of competition. Eventually 30 works are chosen from around the state to travel with the governor as he travels throughout the state of Michigan. Each school in Oakland county is allowed to submit only 5 works - each from a different artist, and each from different assignments. This year the following students were selected to represent LHNW at this exhibit: Laura Doede Kristen Hu Yuri Kim Olivia Pilon Cici Xiao The exhibit runs until February 27th, so if you re in the area - stop on in and see all the great work! Carrie Tignanelli (Class of 2009) Carrie, a Michigan Art Education Association Art Contest District winner while at LHNW, recently shared with me a copy of her first book that she has illustrated. The book entitled, What If was written by Alicia Winget, mother of Mrs. Toth! Carrie did all the illustrations with a combination of colored pens and a bit of computer work. Many of these contests have cash or scholarship prizes. Regardless of whether you win or not, it is great to put your art into the public eye and to have it judged by others. It also looks great on your portfolio or resume that you have entered your work in contests outside of your school. Good luck! Valentine s Day Cards for Children s Hospital This year we again had the opportunity to create handcrafted Valentine s Day cards for Detroit Medical Center s Children s Hospital. A downtown Rochester boutique, Catching Fireflies, collects and delivers these cards to the children who are spending their holiday there. Unfortunately due to our snow day, our cards did not get delivered in time. We will hang onto them until next year s collection. Thanks to Kristeen Cummings, Kayla Burton, Alayna Kersten, Mary Northcott and Amanda Klebba for making cards this year. This is a program that has been going on for a few years now and we hope that we can get more people involved in creating these cards next year.

4 ARTSONIA ARTSONIA Page 4 Artsonia Forms Needed Art students who wish to have their work posted online must turn in the Artsonia permission form with their parents approval to Mr. Davis. Work cannot be posted without proper permission. Artsonia Artist Statements Artsonia offers students the ability to place an artist s statement with their work. This is simply an explanation of the project and their thinking behind what they did. It is good practice for them to talk about their art and to comment on the works of others as well. I encourage our art students to do this with regularity, especially if they plan on making a career in art. Thank You! Thank you to all of those who have been following our student s artworks on Artsonia and also to those who have ordered products from the site. It may not seem like much, but this kind of support does add up over the year(s). Look for our student s work in the Artist of the Week contest weekly. The winner and the school both get money to spend on art supplies! To date this year we have had 8 students up for the award and two of them have won!
