3 General Info Ages 2 5 with an adult Mia s youth classes provide fun and challenging hands-on art experiences that are enriched and inspired by works of art in the museum s collection and special exhibitions. Led by experienced art instructors, museum classes offer young people a global view of art history, as well as fascinating insights into artists, techniques, and styles. In the galleries, students spend time learning directly from masterpieces. In the studio, students develop basic art skills, experiment with an array of artistic mediums, and gain confidence through exercises that foster self-expression. Creative problem-solving and art-making activities are integrated into each class. Selected artworks by students are displayed in the Community Commons Gallery in the fall. Kinetic Sculpture Wednesday, June 20, 10:30 11:30am Registration closes June 18. Get your body moving by mirroring poses in the galleries. Then take that creative momentum into the studio to create a kinetic sculpture of your own. Puppetry & Performance Wednesday, July 11, 10:30 11:30am Registration closes July 9. Action Painting Wednesday, August 1, 10:30 11:30am Registration closes July 30. Dive into an immersive art experience that places your child at the center of the canvas. We ll get inspired by action painters, take a tour of the galleries, and throw some paint! Extended care The Children s Theatre Company (CTC) is pleased to offer a convenient extended-care option to Mia Studio Program participants. The extended-care option offers both free playtime and organized activities with CTC s education staff. Morning extended care is offered from 8am until morning classes begin, and afternoon extended care is offered from 3:30 until 5:30pm. Register for extended care by calling during regular box-office hours. Full scholarships available The Mia Youth & Teen Studio Program is pleased to offer full scholarships to families who qualify. Scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and are valid for one year. Each youth or teen awarded a scholarship is invited to participate in one class/camp per semester. Create a wonderful world of puppets using papier mâché, fabric, cardboard, and your imagination. Get inspired by fantastic fairy tales and otherworldly stories presented in Mia s galleries. Ages 7 Painting & Drawing July 30 August 3, 1 4pm Registration closes July 27. This foundational class prompts young artists to experiment with introductory drawing and painting techniques while exploring the basic elements of art: color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value. Full-day classes Monday Friday, 9:30am 3:30pm We ll paint views of the city outside, take in landscape paintings and drawings in Mia s collection, and learn about horizon lines, foreground, middle ground, and backgrounds. Sculpture June 25 29, 9:30am 3:30pm Registration closes June 22. Dive into Mia s vast collection of sculpture by sketching from masterworks, experimenting and playing with 3D techniques, and sculpting artworks of your own. Basic Elements of Art July 9 13, 9:30am 3:30pm Registration closes July. This foundational class will prompt young artists to experiment with introductory drawing and painting techniques while exploring the basic elements of art: color, form, line, shape, space, texture, and value. Puppetry July 1 20, 9:3am 3:30pm Registration closes July 13. Get to know the creatures, beasts, and monsters that live at the museum, and transform cardboard boxes into colorful animals and fantastic worlds of your own. Comics, Cartoons & Pop Art August 10, 9:30am 3:30pm Registration closes August 3. Let s take a look at works created by Pop artists, check out influential comics and cartoons, and make an artwork inspired by all of it. Figure Drawing August 13 17, 9:30am 3:30pm Registration closes August 10. Dive into the galleries to sketch from Mia s vast collection of figurative sculpture, and learn from looking at work by the masters. Water, Colors & Watercolors June 25 29, 9:30am 3:30pm Registration closes June 22. Let s talk about importance of water in our lives by examining artworks that feature water. We ll also play with water as a medium and explore a variety of watercolor techniques. Sports & Art August 10, 9:30am 3:30pm Registration closes August 3. Pass, dribble, and kick. Let s get inspired by artworks featuring athletes, then learn basic gesture-drawing techniques to capture movement in 2-D. Check out artworks in Mia s collection inspired by play, movement, and a kid s perspective, then create a toy of your own to take home. Let s take a look at works created by Pop artists, check out influential comics and cartoons, and make a comic book inspired by all of it. From artifacts of ancient civilizations to the latest contemporary paintings, students are steeped in art history on view in Mia s galleries while getting handson opportunities to capture various movements. Explore art films and videos in Mia s collection, learn the basics of video editing, and get behind the lens to shoot a video of your own. Street Art & Graffiti July 1 20, 9:30am 3:30pm Registration closes July 13. Get inspired by artists like Swoon and Raymond Hains, who use the street as their canvas. We ll check out work by pioneers of graffiti art, then adopt their techniques to create artworks to take home. 7 8

A partnership with the Autism Society of Minnesota Family Days Second Sunday of every month 11am 5pm, free Join us for our free monthly event for families, kids, and the young at heart. On the second Sunday of every month, you ll have a blast making art, meeting local performers, and going on artful adventures in Mia s galleries. Save the date! Register by calling AuSM: Mia and the Autism Society of Minnesota (AuSM) co-present this camp for young artists with autism. Join us for an exciting opportunity to practice social skills and make friends in the company of art and creativity. We ll be inspired by artwork in the galleries, then create our own masterpieces while trying out new materials, from air-dry clay to acrylic paints. Co-taught by Mia art instructors and an AuSM education specialist. Participants who are not group ready must be accompanied by a PCA or caregiver to assist during the sessions. Group-ready participants demonstrate self-care skills without assistance, follow adult direction, show readiness for large-group participation (including the ability to remain with the group at all times), and follow safety rules independently. 9 10
