2 Awareness and Community Support This year we continued to use our own Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, and Gmail accounts to provide members information about YAM. The sites contained lesson ideas as well as collaboration space for all teachers. All sites allowed members to submit their YAM artifacts. Every year we create a survey to collect information from Yam participants. We are always continuing to update our questions so we receive the most valuable information from our teachers. A QR code was created for easy access to the survey.

3 Awareness and Community Support

4 Funding Youth Art Month receives $1,300 per year from GAEA to assist in promoting YAM at our spring and fall conferences. We found that teachers across the state were generally well support this year and some counties and schools helped to fund YAM events. Some teachers spent money out of pocket, but not an overwhelming amount. A few art programs reported earning money through art fundraisers or shows that they donated back to the community or their schools.

10 Observances, Exhibits, and Events Kerri Waller, Simpson Middle School, Cobb County Schools Students in this art program created artwork they donated to the faculty and staff of their school. They designed and released a free digital coloring book to the community. Students created a collaborative set of wings and they displayed them for others to take pictures in front of. Students participated in an annual Middle School students art show. Students used alcohol inks to create tiles that were installed in the art room.

11 Observances, Exhibits, and Events Pam Weldon, Mathews Elementary School, Muscogee County Student artwork was on display at the River Center. A reception was held for family and friends. This is an annual event for middle and high school schools in Muscogee County and open for those interested in participating. The school donated about $300 towards the event. Parents were notified of the event via letters. Kaitlin Jezequel, Pine Mountain Middle School, Cobb County Students held an art exhibition around the school to promote the arts. Social Media was used to highlight student artwork. Student art was displayed around the county. The school spent around $ on YAM activities.

12 Observances, Exhibits, and Events Katie Callan, Arbor Station Elementary School, Douglas County Annual art show at the courthouse, school board, and arts center. Art teachers paid out of pocket for treats for participating students. Alexandrea Boyington, Alcovy High School, Newton County Students participated in the Memory Project and created portraits of children from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Dr. Lauren Phillips, Nesbit Elementary School, Gwinnett County Students participated in a county wide art show, Tapestry as well as a school hosted art show.

13 Observances, Exhibits, and Events Terri Suraco, Hollydale Elementary School, Cobb County Students participated in a school wide art show and frame sale as well as a Student Jump Rope Exhibit. The sale raised $330 from Artome frames. $50 in refreshments was donated from the school s PTA program. The school donated $80 towards YAM activities. The school used flyers, invitations, and posters to promote the event. Whitney Osborne, J. J. Harris Elementary School, Clarke County Students participated in the Clarke County Youth Art Month Show. MaryJo Mulvey, River Ridge High School, Cherokee County Students created designs and submitted them for the annual flag contest. No money was raised from events nor was any spent by the school in support of them.

14 Observances, Exhibits, and Events Tamara Daughtry, Satilla Marsh Elementary School, Glynn County Students participated in a county wide exhibit at the Downtown Gallery and at the public library. Students also participated in a school wide ARTy party Youth Art Month activities raised $1,500 for the school and/or art program. The Mayor of Brunswick, Georgia signed a proclamation for Youth Art Month.

15 Observances, Exhibits, and Events Sue Grigalunas, Magill Elementary School, Gwinnett County The school participated in the annual county wide art show, Tapestry. 48 students were featured in the show from this school. Students from the art club and a select few classes created Chihuly style sculptures out of recycled water bottles. They were put on display outside of the school. The school held an annual Evening of the Arts where the theme matched the state YAM theme of community. About $150 was spent for these events. YAM activities were announced on the school TV news.

16 Observances, Exhibits, and Events Mary Breazeale, Langston Hughes High School, Fulton County Organized and held the first annual Southside Showdown, an art show for students in the south portion of Fulton County. Art Teach collaborated with The High Museum of Art, located in Atlanta, to host the event. Weekly art activities were provided in the cafeteria during the month of March to celebrate YAM. This was done in effort to raise art awareness to non-art students. A collaborative thumbprint mural was created by the students. $400 was donated from the school and an additional $200 was spent on awards and supplies for the activities. Amber Arnold, Level Creek Elementary School, Gwinnett County Students participated in a countywide exhibit, Tapestry. A visiting artist came to the school to speak with students about art careers. The art program received $250 in donations towards YAM activities.

17 Observances, Exhibits, and Events Alisha Montgomery, Willie J. Williams Middle School, Colquitt County Students participated in an art show at the Colquitt County Arts Center. Exhibits also took place at the school and the Central Board Office for Colquitt County. About $50 was spent in support of YAM events. Proclamations were signed by the school s principal, superintendent, and mayor of Colquitt County. Advertisements were sent out via the local newspaper as well as Remind 101.

18 Observances, Exhibits, and Events Debit West, North Gwinnett High School, Gwinnett County The Mayor of Suwannee, Jimmy Burnette visited and signed an official proclamation. Students participated in the annual county wide Tapestry exhibit. Students created trading cards with the YAM theme in mind, community. $8,000 was raised for Relay for Life through the Annual Relay for Life ART Auction. A local TV station reported on the annual Tapestry exhibit. Invitations were sent out for the Tapestry event as well as posts on social media. Students created Tape Wall Murals in honor of Youth Art Month.

20 Observances, Exhibits, and Events Gail Peake, Cross Creek High School, Richmond County Students created a collaborative YAM mural and took photographs of each other to support famous artworks and artists.

21 Observances, Exhibits, and Events Tiffany Weser Chrisman, Butler High School, Richmond County Students participated in a county wide art show. Students were featured in two newspaper articles with the Augusta Chronicle for hand painted shoes. Students also participated in the Arnold Palmer calendar competition. Random acts of Art where students created original works of art and then donated them to teachers in the school. Student designs were also submitted for the GAEA Sargent Art Contest and one student won the high school division. Students also participated in the YAM Flag Contest where two designs were selected as winners. Students participated in the Golden Harvest Empty Bowls event by donating bowls. Scientists from Augusta University came to photograph the human brain and discuss brain awareness week.

24 Observances, Exhibits, and Events Chris Lambert, Cherokee High School, Cherokee County Students took a school field trip to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. No additional funds were spent or raised in support of Youth Art Month activities.

25 Sargent Art Contest This year, Sargent Art offered Georgia Art Teachers the opportunity to win art supplies for their classrooms and students. We opened this opportunity in the form of a contest utilizing our YAM theme of community. In the future, we hope to combine this amazing opportunity with our annual flag contest since both competitions will utilize the Georgia state theme. Winners were selected via survey for an Elementary, Middle, and High School student and teacher. This year, the winners were: Tiffany Weser Chrisman, Butler High School Nicole Gaut, Durham Middle School Steven Setsar, East Newton Elementary School

31 Flag Contest The annual contest was open to all students K-12 in Georgia schools. The flag design was to connect with our state YAM theme of community. This year, we decided to collaborate with a multitude of designs as so many fantastic options were submitted.
