1 It Can Wait Don t Text & Drive Campaign ABSS High Schools All ABSS high schools participated in the AT&T national It Can Wait campaign again texting and driving on Thursday, September 19. Students and staff members watched a powerful video then had the opportunity to sign a pledge to be personally responsible and not text while driving. Check out the story at Williams High from the Times-News: news/u-r-at-risk-students-get-themessage-on-texting-and-driving CTEC Students Pledge We Don t Text and Drive Heather Blackmon, Principal On Thursday, students and staff at CTEC participated in the National Pledge Day for AT&T s It Can Wait: Don t Text and Drive campaign. Over 200 students signed the pledge, and several were able to test their skills in an actual simulator provided by AT&T. It was a great way to call all of our attention to the dangers of texting and driving. ABSS s own Jenny Faulkner was the 100th signer of the pledge at CTEC! We appreciate her hard work and dedication for this event, and coverage of all of the great things happening in ABSS! Editor s note: Check out Heather Blackmon in the photo at right testing the AT&T driving simulator which synchs with your cell phone to send nd texts while you are trying to drive in downtown traffic. The simulator really emphasized how much your driving skills deteriorate while trying to send or read text messages.

3 Eastlawn Elementary Panthers Have Pride!! Submitted by Tyffany Carter, Technology Facilitator and Tracy Woodward, Data Manager Eastlawn students participated in campus clean up toda!. Students helped beautify the campus by pulling weeds, pruning and spreading mulch. This was a great finale to the character trait of the month which was Responsibility.

4 North Graham Elementary SUBMITTED BY CHARLOTTE LEE-RUSSELL LEE (technology) and JOY Y RUST (music) The North Graham Cardinals enjoyed visiting "THE ART OF THE BRICK," the inspiring exhibit sponsored by the Alamance Arts Council. Coun All students K-5 K visited over a two day period this week thanks to the generosity of the Arts Council and the Wooten Foundati Foundation. (Did you know it cost $170,000 to bring this international exhibit to Alamance County?) Thanks to thorough preparation and lessons from Mrs. Taylor (NGE Librarian), students were able to tell the docents about the artist, Nathan Sawaya, including that tha he was a lawyer before he started designing Lego designs on a full time basis and that he had to pay full price for all the legos he purchased. The exhibit is currently on tour in 4 cities in the world: Tel Aviv, Israel; New York City; Shanghai, China; and... Graham, NC! You have until October 31 to experience it! In addition to the excitement of discovering the 40+ sculptures, students had the opportunity to be peer mentors to younger students. Older students were paired with younger students to be sure that the younger students didn't touch any of the exhibits as well as discussing key points of the sculptures with each other. It was evident that our students are digital natives, as some of them brought their own "older models" of ipods and cell phones phones with cameras so they could capture the excitement of the exhibit to share at home. Others used our school flip cameras as well as digital cameras to capture the sculptures.

5 NGE students have been creating self-portraits portraits in art class with Miss Lupton, Lup using different mediums. Imagine their excitement when they saw Nathan Sawaya's self-portrait self created with Legos! The staff at the Alamance Children's Museum graciously allowed our students to take a quick walk through the museum after looking at the t Lego sculptures. Imagine the students' surprise when they saw the special message that museum staff had written on the very special art area which welcomed our NGE students! At our first nine weeks PBIS celebration on Thursday students continued continu the Lego fun, creating their own designs with Legos. They used the Lego movie maker app to create a movie of the pictures we took at the exhibit, which will be viewed by students in the coming weeks. They also loved using a fun Lego 4+ Mover app as well, w geared for "young builders". We were especially proud of our students as we received many compliments about student behavior and knowledge from other visitors at the museum as well as the museum staff. This was a field trip that students and adults will remember forever!
