3 Pat Walker Director of Education Danforth Museum and School of Art It was a pleasure to have the opportunity to view almost 300 photos of work done by art students at Hopkinton High School, and to take part in a process that celebrates this work and creates a permanent record of it. The work submitted presented numerous styles and techniques, from blind contour drawings, tonal charcoal drawings and colorful paintings, to black and white and color photography, ceramic arts and graphic design pieces. I viewed landscapes, still lifes, portraits, abstractions, functional crafts, sculpture and graphic design solutions to commercial needs. The broad range of accomplished submissions speaks to the wonderful program at Hopkinton High School. I salute the administration and staff at HHS for recognizing the importance of art in the curriculum. It was not an easy task to choose what art to include in HopArt Working in a museum that annually holds juried exhibitions of artwork, and daily has visitors looking at art, I know that each juror (and each visitor) has preferences. I will tell you about some of mine. I love the materials of art, and feel that each mark made has meaning for the whole. I am moved by how colors interact with each other, by interesting spatial play, and by rhythms within a work. What did I look for in the work submitted for HopArt 2012? In addition to a level of technical proficiency, I found in many of the chosen works a sensibility or vision that drew me into the work. A wonderful passage of color, a display of space, strong composition, beautiful line, or a sense of light may have first caught my eye as I went through the artwork. But it was sometimes a more elusive quality that made an impression on me as I viewed the artwork again and again a sincerity of purpose, a joy in the materials, a mood or attitude, a meaningful moment captured, or a surprise in the artwork that helped me see something in a new way. Congratulations on your fine work! I saw wonderful qualities and many hours of hard work in the artwork that was not chosen, and would like to congratulate all students who participated. In the words of Bill Ivey, former Chairman of the National Endowment for the Art,... the arts are more than just important, they are central to how we see ourselves, what we believe about ourselves, and how we present ourselves to each other.
