Saturday 1 March Sunday 27 April Drawing with Light Essex artist Alan Hockett has spent the last year walking the Essex coastline, he is fascinated with capturing the remote and isolated areas where the land and sea coexist. Using a pinhole camera to radically re-interpret this landscape in a way reminiscent of the early days of photography. His homemade camera (a baked bean can) distorts the image, creating emotion and tension whilst keeping the essence of the original subject. Saturday 3 May Sunday 6 July Journeyer - a person who visits a place The Journeyer exhibition is a voyage of discovery around Harwich; a town defined by travel, helping those who choose to journey elsewhere. But what of the town itself, what is the story of the people that stay? The arts collective Glassball based themselves in Harwich over 2013, discovering the untold tales of the town and its community. Glassball s research has resulted in a series of audio and visual artworks that creatively reveal Harwich s unique character. Thursday 10 July Sunday 7 September The Great War: Home-life and Service during A Touring Exhibition produced by Epping Forest District Museum and supported by The Arts Council, England on the First World War and its impact on the East of England. Described at the time as the war to end all wars, the enormous loss of life and huge sacrifices made by those fighting overseas and on the home front are explored in this exhibition, focussing on the experiences of people in the Eastern region.

3 Thursday 11 September Sunday 2 November Coastal Open - part of Essex Summer of Art The annual Coastal Open gives local artists a chance to showcase their talents in arts and craft. Each year we exhibit over 30 artists and work varies from driftwood sculptures, textiles, mosaics to photography and painting. A series of free workshop and demonstrations will accompany the exhibition. If you are interested in exhibiting then details can be found on our website or ring Events Friday 7 March, 11am Little Holland & Clacton during the Great War - part of the Spring Talks Local historian Roger Kennell gives an illustrated presentation on Little Holland, and Clacton during the Great War. Admission: 2 Saturday 15 March, 2pm The War Behind the Wire by John Lewis-Stempel - part of the Essex Book Festival The last untold story of WWI: the fortunes and fates of 170,000 British Soldiers captured by the enemy. Using prisoners diaries, letters home and poetry the death, life and above all, the glory of Britain s warriors behind the wire is revealed. For it was in the POW camps, far from the blasted trenches, that the true spirit of the Tommy was exemplified. Bookings are made though the Mercury Theatre Box Office on Admission: 5/ 4

4 Friday 21 March, 11am North Essex War Memorials - part of the Spring Talks Author Paul Rusiecki examines how the war memorial movement originated during WW1, and how it developed after the war ended. The talk covers the process by which war memorials came to fruition (committees, fundraising, donations), the different types of memorials that were erected, and the controversies which often arose in towns and villages about war memorials. Friday 28 March, 11am Stow Maries Aerodrome - part of the Spring Talks Ivor Dallinger will give an illustrated talk on the Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome. The Aerodrome was in use from 1916 to 1919 as a home defence station in the war against Zeppelin and German aeroplane raids. It has many of its original buildings in situ which are currently undergoing restoration to bring the site back to its 1918 appearance. Friday 4 April, 11am So Too Have the Doves Gone - part of the Spring Talks This talk by Pam Job and Judith Wolton is an introduction to a new anthology of poems by Essex and Suffolk poets on the general theme of conflict. The collection was inspired by the new Wilfred Owen Memorial in Ors, Northern France, and also commemorates the Great War of There will be a slide show and talk concerning the memorial, and readings from the poems. Saturday 12-Sunday 13 April, 10am-5pm Camera Obscura Over the weekend the viewing room on the top of the tower will be converted into a camera obscura where the public can come and see how artists from the renaissance period used this device to frame the picture prior to painting. This became the base of all photography from Fox Talbot to modern day digital.

5 Sunday 20 April, 1.30pm-3.30pm Easter Egg Hunt at the Tower Hunt all the eggs to claim your yummy chocolate prize. Take time out from your hunt to enjoy egg-tastic creative activities and other seasonal games. Children must be supervised at all times. Sunday 20 April, 7pm Traxz Come and enjoy the incredible acoustic music inside Tendring s most unusual music venue with curved walls, historical architecture and creative exhibition space it will be an unforgettable evening! 6 Workshops First Wednesday of every month, 11am-1pm Creative Net at the Tower Drop in and join in, everybody is welcome at these free adult workshops. Connect and catch up with creative sessions on your coastal doorstep. Studio style sessions include a range of taster sessions or bring your creative skills to demonstrate to others. Materials, refreshments and creative conversations provided. Tuesday 8 April Pinhole camera workshop Garden session Come along and make your own pinhole camera in this free adult workshop, then in the pioneering ways of the early photographers you will take some pictures in the garden before developing your results. Tuesday 8 April Pinhole camera, computer workshop Free adult workshop with Alan Hockett. Scan your pinhole pictures into the computers where you will use the software photoshop elements to invert and make adjustments to colour, contrast and levels of your picture prior to saving as a jpeg for printing. Monday 14-Thursday 17 April, 10am-1pm Spring C-Net Come along and work with artist Valerie Osment in these free creative workshops for young people (8-15 yrs). Join artist Valerie Osment and explore new exciting ways of drawing. The Big Draw is an annual festival organised by the Campaign for Drawing who have one simple aim to get everyone drawing!
