1 Grand Marais Art Colony Residency Series The Art Colony offers a variety of residency experiences to artists, providing work space in a quiet, natural setting to support the process, development, creation, and production of new works. Experimentation and creative risk-taking are encouraged! See the options below and contact the Art Colony with any questions. Selected Artists-in-Residence March 7 20 Artists are invited to submit an application for one of two selected artists-in-residence. Artists will be provided with lodging, workspace, and a weekly stipend to work in either the multi-use Founders Hall Studio or in the Eco-friendly Printmaking Studio. Two artists may also apply to work in a collaborative residency. See attached application and instructions. Mentor Residency Workshops The Art Colony will host five mentoring artists in Each artist offers a unique personal and philosophical approach and teaching style. While students will bring independent projects to work on, workshops are cooperative in nature, characterized by critical group dialogue, focused time to work, and mentored guidance. 2 Selected Artists-in-Residence Grand Marais, Minnesota Application Guidelines Residency Description The Grand Marais Art Colony Selected Artists-in-Residency (AiR) is designed to provide artists with uninterrupted work time to support the development, creation, and production of new, original works, while also fostering a deep connection with the surrounding landscape. Selected Residencies are for two weeks. Artists are provided with lodging and work space in either the Founders Hall 2-D Studio or in the Eco-friendly Printmaking Studio. Note that artists may apply to work in collaboration for one residency. Additionally, the Artists-in-Residence will host one open studio and offer one community engagement project that fits within the bounds of the Art Colony mission. The scope of the community engagement project is largely up to the individual artists while Art Colony staff will assist with implementation and give guidance as needed. Benefits The Art Colony will provide the Artists-in-Residence with the following: Workspace Studio equipment (see below) Lodging $100 stipend per week Community Engagement supplies reimbursement (if applicable) Facilities Please specify your studio preference on your application. Founders Hall 2-D Studio The Founders Hall 2-D Studio is housed in the Historic St. John s Catholic Church built in 1916 and purchased by the Art Colony in the 1960s. The building has been an inspiring 2

3 sanctuary for generations of artists with superb northern light, high ceilings, suspended hardwood floors, and ample wall space. This studio is conducive to, among other possibilities, 2-D media, dance, writing, photography, and temporary installation/3-d disciplines. Equipment provided includes: Work surfaces/tables Easels Palette tables Drawing horses Clip on lighting Folding chairs Eco-Friendly Printmaking Studio The Art Colony Printmaking Studio has been called one of the best in the Midwest region. This space is well-suited for printmakers, writers, and photographers and includes the following equipment which is available to the Artist-in-Residence: Work surfaces/tables Black out curtains Takach 40 x 72 etching press Vandercook Number 4 proof press Copper etching facility UV Exposure Unit & light box Paper soaking station Vent hood for aquatint Paper drying shelf Folding chairs Lodging The artists will be provided with separate lodging. One artist will be housed in a guest room conveniently located at the Art Colony. This space includes a shared bathroom with shower, and a mini-kitchen with full-size refrigerator and stove/oven. One artist will be housed in an off-site apartment with full amenities. Within walking distance of the Art Colony are a YMCA, food co-op, grocery stores, post office, and many restaurants and shops along the harbor. 3

4 Open Studio and Community Engagement Project The Open Studio and Community Engagement Project (CEP) are important aspects of this residency. These events give our broader community an opportunity to participate in and better understand the creative process from the artists perspective. OPEN STUDIO The Open Studio is a scheduled one-hour event the first Saturday of the residency (1pm 2pm) and does not require any advanced preparation. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROJECT (CEP) The CEP typically takes place the second Saturday of the residency but a specific schedule will be set in conjunction with the Art Colony staff. Artists are asked to consider the Art Colony mission and craft a CEP that meets one of the three prongs of the mission: The mission of the Grand Marais Art Colony is to provide services to artists, promote art education, and nurture art in our community by providing an environment for creative excellence. Consider the following when crafting a CEP: How does this project fit within one of the three prongs of the Art Colony mission? What kind of project draws upon my own unique skills? Is there a specific artist service I can provide to local artists such as a talk on web development, social media, or pricing artwork? Would I rather prepare something prior to the residency (such as an artist talk) or facilitate something during the residency? Do I prefer to teach, to lecture, or give a demo? Do I like to get out into the community and interact with people in a more spontaneous way? What age groups do I prefer to work with? Please also keep in mind your capacity to work this into a two-week residency. We are looking for a well-thought out, engaging, yet manageable project that adds to but does not overtake the residency plan. 4

5 Cook County & Grand Marais Cook County is made up of a series of small towns, each with a unique personality, linked together by the ancient Sawtooth Mountains, the pristine Boundary Waters Wilderness Canoe Area, and the rugged shores of Lake Superior. For generations, artists have flocked to this area to savor its grandeur and explore the surrounding boreal forest. At the center of Cook County is Grand Marais, a quaint harbor village with eclectic galleries, shops, and restaurants. Grand Marais has long supported the arts and is home to many artists. March is a quiet time in our community, lending itself well to a focused residency. At the same time, there are many outdoor activities within easy access including skiing, snow shoeing, and hiking. Grand Marais Art Colony The longest-lived art colony in Minnesota, the Grand Marais Art Colony began in 1947 as a summer refuge for artists seeking study and creative inspiration within the dynamic North Shore landscape. Since that time, the Art Colony has served as a creative retreat and catalyst, helping people to foster a unique relationship between outdoor inspiration and artistic pursuit. The Art Colony offers year-round classes for novice to professional artists, high-quality studio access, and seven inclusive events and exhibitions. The facilities include clay, glass, printmaking and a large, multi-use studio space. Questions? 10 Visual Artists: Submit 8-10 digital images saved on a single PDF up to 5 megabytes. Images must be clear, professionally presented, and accurately represent your work.
