4 Contests Results and Explanation: The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Program currently hosts competitions in approximately 100 public independent school districts and 60 private schools within 120 miles of the city of Houston. Each year, about 300,000 students, grades Pre-K through 12th, participate in this program, which showcases the culture, history and heritage of the West. At each School District event the following pieces are chosen for each level (elementary, middle and high school) to go on to the Hayloft Gallery at the Rodeo; Best of Show, Gold Medal and Special Merit. After they arrive to the Rodeo, all these Best of shows and Gold Medals from all over Texas are judged again to be a part of the Grand Prix judging where approximately 50 pieces receiving the highest score will be considered for auction. The elementary pieces chosen for the Hayloft Gallery also, go through the Reliant Energy Power of Art completion. 5 HLS&R Art Auction Results: 7 chosen for Auction from SBISD- Joy Chung- (TOP 10)- Sold for $50,000 Ashley Park- Sold for $22,000 Julia Delaney- Sold for $3,000 Amy Womack- Sold for $7,000 Chris Song- Sold for $6,000 Azelia Lau- Sold for $15,000 Juwon Yoo- Sold for $17,000 Bokyung Jeon- Sold for $7000 The Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) has sponsored these (UIL) Visual Art Scholastic Event (VASE). VASE, Junior VASE and TEAM (elementary) is the only art event of its kind in the nation. Students are provided the opportunity to bring artworks created in their art classes to their regional event where they are interviewed and/or juried. VASE Area winners were selected at the regional events to go on to compete at the state level. State VASE medal winners were selected as the best in the state. From these state winners the top 100 pieces were awarded a Gold Seal and the art work will travel the state as an exhibition. Top of the Junior VASE and Top of the TEAM winners are chosen at each regional event from all the top rated medal winners. 6 The Scholastic Art Awards is where area schools and districts submit students best artwork and writing through to compete at the regional level. These entries are judged by panels of highly qualified professionals who select Gold Key (state winners), Silver Key (regional winner) and Honorable Mention recipients. 7 Scholastic Art National Gold Key Winners: Juwon Yoo Gold Medal Saranna Zhang Gold Medal The State and National PTO Reflections program is PTA s cornerstone arts program. It was developed to encourage students to explore their talents and express themselves. Since then, the Reflections Program has inspired millions of students to reflect on a specific theme and create original artwork. Each year, students in Grades Pre-K through 12 are recognized for bringing the theme to life through dance choreography, film production, literature, music composition, photography and visual arts. Student in each school district submit art work and it can be chosen for area, state and even the national level to compete.
