4 ABOUT ARTS For over 15 years, ARTS has helped youth reach their full potential through creativity. Free classes in Visual, Performing, Media Arts, and Maker and an on-site resource network of services like mental health and wellness counseling, college and career advising, and leadership coaching are available to students ages ARTS is also a key partner working with National City toward their goal of establishing a safe and vibrant arts and culture district, with the ARTS Center serving as a hub of community creativity. ARTS goal is not to simply train artists, but rather to inspire future generations of innovative, empathetic, and visionary creators who will achieve their goals, reinvest in their communities, and make the world a better place. 5 VISUAL ARTS DEPARTMENT Class Title: Advanced Art Projects Level: Level II Class Dates: September 11-November 29 Class Time: Wednesday 4:30-6:30 pm Albert Description: Students will create mixed or multi-media art based on a focused concept or theme. This class is designed for advanced level art students, intended to challenge and elevate creativity and skill. Please see list of prerequisite requirements if you are interested in taking the class. Please contact Laura Apricio for more information about prerequisites. Class Title: Design & Illustration Level: Level I Albert Class Dates: September 7-October 12 Class Time: Tuesday & thursday 4:30-6 pm Description: Students will learn design and illustration fundamentals through a variety of creative projects. A variety of art styles, media, and practices will be introduced. Class Title: Expressive Arts Level: Levels I Laura Class Dates: September 26-December 2 Class Time: Friday 5-6:30 pm Description: Students will create artwork in different art mediums, using their surroundings as inspiration. They ll learn new techniques and find their preferred art-making medium through art exploration. Class Title: Open Studio Level: Levels I & II Albert Class Date: Class Time: Friday I 3:30 to 6:30

6 MEDIA, WRITING, & FASHION ARTS Class Title: Photography Level: Level I Michelle Class Dates: September 16-December 2 Class Time: Saturday 2:00-3:30 pm Description: Find your voice using photography. Students will discover how to express thoughts and ideas using basic and intermediate photography fundamentals such as point-of-view, leading lines, repetition, rule-of-thirds, and depth-of-field. Class Title: Write On! Level: Levels I Michelle Class Dates: September 11-December 2 Class Time: Thursday 5-6:30 pm Description: The Write On! workshop is for creative writers and/or those with an interest in storytelling, poetry, and comics. Through this workshop we will tell and create strories both real and imagined, about our own experiences or things we ve heard and observed. We will take short walks around Kimball Park and the neighborhood to gain writing inspiration. The final project will be a class chapbook or personal zines. Class Title: Fashionable Gift Making Level: Level I Chareen Class Dates: October 18-December 2 Class Time: Wednesday 4:30-6:30 pm Description: Just in time for the holidays, students will learn how to craft and sew stylish gifts.

7 PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT Class Title: Beginning Violin Level: Level I Janie Class Dates: September 8-December 1 Class Time: Friday 4-5 pm & 5-6 pm Description: This course is an introduction to playing the violin. Along with learning classical violin technique, students will learn how to read and write music. Students will also participate in basic ear training in order to learn how to play with good intonation and tone. Class Title: Intermediate Violin Level: Level II Janie Class Dates: September 8-December 1 Class Time: Friday 5-6 pm Description: This course is a continuation of learning to play the violin. Along with reviewing and breaking down classical string technique, students will develop stronger music reading and writing skills through more challenging music and extensive ear training.

8 PERFORMING ARTS DEPARTMENT continued Class Title: Choir Level: Level I SacraProfana Class Dates: September 30-December 1 Class Time: Friday 4-5:30 pm Description: Students will be exposed to beginning choral and vocal skills. Students will explore their voices through various exercises including those that deal with breathing, intonation, part- singing and rhythm. Students will also learn the basics of sight-singing and ear training to help them in future choral situations. Music will be chosen by the students in collaboration with the teaching artist. In addition, students have the option to write choral music for their peers. This class is meant to serve as an introductory vocal and choral skills class. Although there is a lot of focus on group ensemble work, the students will also work on individual development of voice and interests. Ideally, this class will serve as a venue for students to explore their voices and learn how to sing in a healthy and free sound. The ability to read music is not necessary to participate in this class. Class Title: Young Artists in Harmony Level: Level III Sean Class Dates: September 30-December 2 Class Time: Saturday 10 am-4 pm Description: Students will work alongside professional musicians to learn the art of music composition, followed by a culminating event in which they will get to present their music piece. By invitation only.

9 MAKER DEPARTMENT Class Title: Object Design with Emphasis on Woodworking Level: Level II Chris Class Dates: September 11-November 27 Class Time: Monday & Wednesday 12:30-4:30 pm Description: Woodworking: a time honored art, craft and profession. Students will learn fundamentals through guided hands-on projects. Skills and competencies are the main idea: knowing your materials, hand tool care and use, and basic power tool use and safety. Projects will include cutting board, box project, and scroll saw project. Once students have completed required elements they will be able to design and build a piece of their own choosing.
