THE MMFA AND ÉQUILIBRE JOIN FORCES TO PROMOTE POSITIVE BODY IMAGE AWARENESS Montreal, May 26, 2016 The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA) and ÉquiLibre have joined forces and expertise to increase young people s awareness of body diversity with a view to fostering their sense of well being through art. From May 26 to August 21, the Museum is pursuing its commitment to the expression of differences with an educational display and a guided tour on body diversity. During the summer of 2011, I was approached by ÉquiLibre, as this organization had been very impressed with the inclusive message of our exhibition The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: we realized that we shared a common goal, that of spreading the important message of appreciating the diversity of our bodies and recognizing the many faces of beauty. Based on our encyclopedic collection, which represents many different canons of beauty down through the ages, this project teaches tolerance, self esteem and curiosity with humour and wisdom at a time when images in the media, which are often phony and Photoshopped, transmit tyrannical stereotypes, especially for young people. Feeling good about yourself starts with becoming aware of and accepting our differences, explained Nathalie Bondil, Director and Chief Curator of the MMFA. These programmes are also the perfect opportunity to celebrate the twenty fifth anniversary of ÉquiLibre, the non profit organization whose mission is to heighten public awareness of the importance of developing a positive body image through actions aimed at helping people acquire healthy lifestyle habits. We cannot imagine a more meaningful way of celebrating our twenty fifth anniversary than taking part in the inauguration of these educational projects at the Museum! This innovative partnership is extremely valuable to ÉquiLibre, as it provides an original way of showing the

importance of body diversity through art and helps young people to develop a critical eye in regard to current, often unrealistic, beauty models, explained Roxanne Léonard, Director General of ÉquiLibre. The Museum s long time commitment to diversity is perfectly represented in the projects we have carried out with ÉquiLibre, which have enabled us to look at the collection through the angle of body awareness and suggest a more inclusive approach, added Jean Luc Murray, Director of Education and Community Programmes at the MMFA. Models Wanted! To mark ÉquiLibre s twenty fifth anniversary, the Museum is presenting the educational display featuring school projects dealing with the acceptance of oneself and others entitled Models Wanted! Presented in the MMFA s J.A. DeSève Gallery, these multidisciplinary projects are the work of students in several Quebec high schools Mont de La Salle (Laval), François Williams (Saint Amable), Antoine Bernard (Carleton sur Mer), aux Quatre Vents (Bonaventure), du Littoral (Grande Rivière), and des Prospecteurs (Murdochville) through a teaching tool co developed for teachers by the Museum and ÉquiLibre. Using works of art in the Museum s collection, students explored the theme of the body and reflected on the impact of media images on their perception of beauty. A Guided Tour on the Theme of Body Diversity As a complement to the exhibition, the Museum is also inviting visitors to discover a wide range of canons of beauty by taking a guided tour through its encyclopedic collection. From the exaggerated forms of a steatopygous figure from the Middle East to the generous curves of a torso by Aristide Maillol, the works of art displayed in the Museum s galleries challenge the tyranny of a single model of beauty by showing viewers a wide range of forms. This bilingual guided tour is offered to Museum visitors on Wednesdays, from June 1 to August 17, at a.m.

Bringing Art to the Schools In Quebec, 50% of teenagers are dissatisfied with the way their bodies look. In addition to the exhibition and guided tour, the Museum is taking its commitment to body diversity beyond its walls with The Museum: Bringing Art to the Schools programme: the fourth poster since the series was launched in 2010 will soon be distributed to schools across Quebec. Designed in collaboration with ÉquiLibre, this poster presents a selection of works of art from the Museum s collection that represent a variety of canons of beauty from different eras and cultures. The aim of this poster campaign is to make young people aware of the great diversity of the human body. Access to the Museum s collections is free at all times for people aged 30 and under. Art helps us to recognize beauty in all shapes and sizes and appreciate the uniqueness of every being. These projects follow in the wake of other actions initiated by the Museum to promote well being in relation to body image. For example, Sharing the Museum Sharing the Douglas, a pilot project developed as part of the Sharing the Museum programme with Concordia University and the Douglas Mental Health University Institute, is designed to help people with eating disorders. Beyond Appearances A study carried out by the Institut de la statistique du Québec in 2012 on the health of young people in high school revealed that: 71% of young people try to change their weight; 51% of young people are dissatisfied with their appearance; 34% of boys are trying to gain weight; most of them are using methods that are considered dangerous to their health; 66% of young people trying to lose weight are using methods that are considered dangerous to their health.

This study shows that excessive concern about weight may have repercussions on both one s physical and mental health. Quebec s most visited museum, it is one of the most popular museums in Canada and ranks twelfth among art museums in North America. Its innovative temporary exhibitions combine artistic disciplines (fine arts, music, film, fashion and design) and are circulated to museums around the world. Its encyclopedic collection, which is on display in four soon to be five pavilions, includes international art, world cultures, decorative arts and design and Quebec and Canadian art. The Museum complex includes a 444 seat concert hall. The MMFA is also one of Canada s leading publishers of art books in English and French, which are distributed internationally. The Michel de la Chenelière International Atelier for Education and Art Therapy, the largest educational complex in a North American art museum, will be housed in the future Michal and Renata Hornstein Pavilion for Peace, which will be inaugurated in November 2016.

About ÉquiLibre ÉquiLibre is a Quebec non profit organization whose mission is to help people deal with weight or body image issues. The organization also works to promote a healthy and diverse representation of the body in the world of fashion, media and advertising. Its actions promote both the development of a positive body image and the adoption of healthy lifestyles among young people and the adults around them.
