AUSTIN AMOA-Arthouse AMOA-Arthouse internships are ideal for expanding one s understanding of the functions of contemporary art spaces and non-profit organizations, as well as a great way to become an active part of the visual arts community in Austin. Internships are organized into fall, spring and summer sessions at both of our locations. Internships are available in Communications, Public Programming, Development/Membership, Visitor Services, Graphic Design, Education, Teen Programs, Teacher Programs, Docents & Tours, Families and Community Programs, Laguna-Gloria Art School. All applicants applying for a position should send a cover letter, resume and internship application form to Natalie Baker, nbaker@amoa-arthouse.org. The following internships also require a writing sample: Curatorial, Public Programs and Communications. The writing sample should be no more than 3 pages in length. Flatbed also does contract, collaborative printing for other publishers, dealers, artists, and institutions and is available on a limited basis for open shop work by experienced artists. Flatbed Gallery is a private art gallery which specializes in original prints. Flatbed Gallery has been an enthusiastic supporter of Southwestern Art History internships, and they are always excited to receive new applications. 2 Harry Ransom Center, University of Texas Summer 2013 Undergraduate Internships During the summer of 2013, the Center will support six undergraduate interns. Four of these interns will be full-time undergraduate students at The University of Texas at Austin. Two of the interns may be selected from outside of the University but must be full-time enrolled undergraduates at another accredited college or university. The Fath Foundation has generously provided funding for this program. Application details for the summer 2013 internships will be posted in January Contact: Danielle Brune Sigler Mexic-Arte Museum Located in the heart of downtown Austin, Mexic-Arte Museum seeks university students to participate in internships for academic credit and educational enrichment. Spring, summer, and fall internships are unpaid and run for 12 weeks with a minimum commitment of hours per week during office hours (Monday-Thursday 9am-6pm and Friday 9am-5pm). Mexic-Arte Museum also encourages interns to attend its Public Programs. Mexic-Arte Museum recognizes the importance of interns and seeks flexible, positive, organized, and selfmotivated candidates that can work both independently and collaboratively in a professional setting. Interns will apply their creativity, critical thinking skills, and enthusiasm to a wide range of projects under the mentorship of Mexic-Arte Museum professionals. Internship opportunities are available in the following departments: Archives: Gathers, organizes, and files print and photographic media related to the history of Mexic-Arte Museum from its inception in Other responsibilities include: documenting public and educational programs, maintaining library resources, offering assistance locating library or archival materials for staff, and working with our Director on our long-term archive project. Curatorial: Gains an international, national, and local perspective of traditional and contemporary Mexican and Latino art through researching artists, helping with exhibition proposals, assisting with exhibition archives, and general departmental support. Development: Working with Development team to assist with donor and media relations, generation of revenue, special events, and database management. Tasks may include data entry, general administrative work, and correspondence. Director s Office: Assists the Founding Director with daily tasks that range from filing, working on special events, updating the database, and attending meetings with prospective donors. Intern will get experience on different aspects of a non-profit organization. Education: Assists with the coordination of youth and adult programs. Other opportunities include: touring youth groups through exhibitions, developing curriculum, preparing for and facilitating creative projects, assisting with education outreach, and helping with program evaluation. Social Media and Graphic Design: Assists in the production of video and/or electronic media resources created for a variety of audiences that help create visibility and awareness for Mexic- Arte s exhibitions, lectures, public programming, and upcoming events. Other opportunities include the design of signage, programs, and invitations for Mexic-Arte s educational programs. 2

3 Studio/Exhibition: works with lead preparator and curator to plan, install, and de-install shows; and prepares for exhibitions, public programs, events, and openings. Laptops are not required but it is greatly appreciated if you are able to work in a mobile capacity. Women and Their Work Gallery Women and Their Work Gallery is located in downtown Austin, and often has internship openings for qualified students. Women & Their Work is a visual and performing art organization located in Central Austin that serves as a catalyst for contemporary art created by women living and working in Texas and beyond. For over 30 years, W&TW has brought groundbreaking art to Austin, with exhibitions, performances, literary readings and educational workshops. 4 DALLAS / FORT WORTH Dallas Contemporary Dallas Contemporary is a non-collecting art museum presenting new and challenging ideas from regional, national and international artists. The institution is committed to engaging the public through exhibitions, lectures, educational programs and events. Throughout the year, Dallas Contemporary seeks bright interns to assist with our departments including exhibitions, education, events, and development. DC internships are collaborative, hands-on positions that require strong writing, research and communication skills, resourcefulness, and the ability to multitask in a small nonprofit environment. Knowledge of contemporary art and/or working museum experience is helpful. contact: learning@dallascontemporary.org Dallas Museum of Art: McDermott Internships The Dallas Museum of Art, through the help of the Eugene McDermott Education Fund, will offer eight paid internship positions four in the Museum s Education Department, and four in the Curatorial Department all beginning September 2011, and with a duration of nine months. These internships are intended for those individuals who wish to explore a career in museum work. Projects assigned involve considerable responsibility and will provide opportunities for the contribution of individual work. Kimbell Art Museum (Fort Worth) Internships are available in the education or public relations/marketing departments. Applicants must choose only one department. The education department offers volunteer internships to college students who enjoy working with people and who are interested in learning more about all aspects of museum education. An internship acquaints students with the Museum s collection and programs, and provides an opportunity to gain experience in a professional setting. The education department offers three internship positions during the fall and spring semesters, and five positions in the summer months. The public relations and marketing department internship is designed to allow interns to see a variety of aspects of the role marketing and PR plays in the Museum s day-to-day activities. Interns will gain an appreciation for the overall impact media relations has on the Museum s reputation and outreach. The public relations and marketing department offers one internship position during the fall, spring, and summer months. 4

5 Interns, under the guidance of staff members, assist in routine departmental work that ranges from clerical support and research projects, to assisting in the planning, preparation, and implementation of Museum programs and events. All internships are unpaid, and generally last three months. A prearranged schedule (no less than twelve hours per week) will also include occasional Thursday evening and weekend events. Students are responsible for making appropriate arrangements with their schools and internship supervisor to receive credit for internships. Art League Houston fulfills its mission through exhibitions, the Art League School, its annual Texas Artist of the Year program, and extensive outreach programming. Exhibitions Intern, two days a week. Duties would include gallery prep, vinyl design, exhibition installation, wrapping artwork, helping create artwork lists, bios, artist statements and much more. Internships are unpaid, but arrangements can be made with the intern s home institution for course credit. We are looking for interested and reliable persons to fill internship positions in our departments for the duration of the fall, spring, and/or summer terms. We ask that you fulfill a minimum of 2-4 hour shifts for the workday, with a commitment of 8-12 hours a week. This position has flexibility depending on your school schedule. 5

The Curatorial Department is charged with presenting exhibition projects that are compelling, timely, and relevant. DiverseWorks is a place where the process of creating art is valued and where artists can test new ideas in the public arena. By encouraging the investigation of current artistic, cultural and social issues, DiverseWorks builds, educates, and sustains audiences for contemporary art. Due to DiverseWorks s small staff, interns play a critical role in the administration and production of DiverseWorks s overall programs and events. Interns at DiverseWorks engage in a variety of aspects of the daily operations of a non-profit arts organization and gain invaluable experience while being introduced to a vast network of art professionals. An internship at DiverseWorks can provide a foundation in a variety of skills, experience, and contacts for a future career as a curator, artist or arts administrator. Daily duties include: Assist with artist research for upcoming programs and events Assist with promotional and marketing tasks Update database and contact lists, and repare membership and donor mailings Assist with the creation of promotional materials for public programs Assist with the set-up and tear down of public events and performances 6

7 Assist DiverseWorks staff with general administration office duties Special projects might include: Organize print and press archive Develop individual donor database Research for upcoming DiverseWorks projects or funding opportunities Prospective interns should meet the following qualifications: Strong background in art history, theater, dance, or literary and a devoted interest in contemporary art, issues, and visual culture Attention to detail and strong organizational, writing, and computer skills are required Creative thinker Experience with or interest in programming and curating Ability to work some evenings and weekends for events Fluency in Microsoft Word and Excel Basic understanding of the web, use of web services and low-level web technologies Knowledge of Houston visual, performing, and literary art scene a plus Requirements: Two days a week for a minimum of three months is required and availability for occasional evening programming. Academic credit is also possible. Interns are invited to participate in DW s programs and events, such as DiverseWorks On Wednesdays and Diverse Discourse. Museum of Fine Arts Houston Each summer the MFAH offers five internships to undergraduate college students considering careers in an art museum. The ten-week long program gives students a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at museum operations and a sampling of related career paths. During their internships, participants work closely with a museum professional on an extensive project based within a particular department. Museum staff also serve as mentors, supporting and advising interns on their educational plans and career goals. Throughout the program, interns have the opportunity to establish meaningful connections within the art world and gain practical experience in many fields including curatorial work, education, marketing, publications, and development. Internships are open to all applicants, and a special emphasis is placed on recruiting a diverse group of undergraduates. Students work full-time, attend weekly meetings to learn about the museum and the arts community, and conclude their experience with a paper and oral presentation. MFAH interns get a chance to learn about the MFAH collections and join gallery talks led by staff; meet with arts professionals at the MFAH as well as at the Menil Collection and other organizations in Houston; contribute significantly to museum projects and programs; and develop relationships with MFAH staff and other members of the internship group. Students selected for the program are paid $3,000 over ten weeks, and receive paid time off and holiday pay. Interns work full-time from 9am to 5pm, Monday through Friday. 7

8 Guidelines for summer internship applications are generally available by October of the previous year on the museum's internship website. Other Internships & Resources The Smithsonian Institution in Washington offers a variety of internship opportunities in its archives and museums. For more information, visit the Smithsonian's internship page at The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice offers one to three month internships. The museum offers an internship program for university students and recent graduates worldwide who study art, art history or related areas and intend to gain practical experience of museology and familiarity with an important collection of modern art. The program offers the opportunity to live in a creative international atmosphere and to be acquainted with the life and culture of Venice. The program for non-italian citizens and the one for Italian citizens are separate. ArtTable Mentored Interships (various cities each year) ArtTable, the leadership organization for professional women in the visual arts, would like to invite female students who are seniors, recent graduates contemplating a graduate education, or graduate students from your institution to apply for our Summer Mentored Internship for Diversity in the Visual Arts Professions ( The program was created to acquaint emerging women professionals with the range of opportunities available to them and is intended to support women from backgrounds generally underrepresented in the field. Through one-on-one mentoring relationships with ArtTable members, interns have the opportunity to work with an established leader in the field and gain exposure to a range of professional activities. Each intern receives a $3000 stipend for eight weeks of work and will be responsible for securing housing during the internship.
