2 CUV50111 DIPLOMA OF VISUAL ARTS In our nationally accredited Diploma of Visual Art, students acquire a range of technical and conceptual techniques for art making whilst developing an individual and personal direction. Participants undertake subjects in studio art, painting methods, sculpture, drawing and contemporary art theory, along with photography, and digital media, giving them the option of selecting a subject area in which to focus on their own major work. Small class sizes and one-to-one teaching allow students to rapidly forge creative direction and identify an independent visual art practice. Our art and design studios are fully equipped and students gain experience exhibiting their work in the Latrobe College gallery space. Students also have the opportunity to particpate in short study trips to New York or the Venice Biennale which is credited to the course. FULL-TIME STUDY The Diploma of Visual Art can be completed in two years of full-time PART-TIME STUDY Part-time study usually consists of between 2 and 4 timetabled subjects per week. The length of the course is dependent on the subject load undertaken. It is possible for students to select their own subjects and pathway of study and to include units from other qualifications such as the Diploma of Graphic Design. ENTRY OPTIONS There are two options for entry into the full-time and part-time programs: Beginning-of-year intake Semester 1: 22 February Mid-year intake Semester 2: 25 July WHO CAN APPLY Inexperienced and experienced applicants can apply. The course is open to year 12, non-year 12 and mature aged applicants. The course will suit those with little experience. An ATAR is not required. See further down for How to Apply. CAREER OPTIONS The Diploma of Visual Art has a broad application with many career opportunities or further study. These include visual artist, animator, illustrator, photographer, designer, gallery assistant, gallery director, visual art teacher, museum conservator, exhibition curator, specialist artisan, visual art industry expert. Students can go onto further study at an Advanced Diploma level or university Degree, Masters or PHD. 2

ACU and will give course credit of one semeter towards their Bachelor of Visual Art degree and one year for the Advanced Diploma of Visual Art. 4 STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES NEW YORK & VENICE BIENNALE TOURS Each year Latrobe College students and non-students have the opportunity to attend art tours to either New York or the Venice Biennale. For two weeks students become fully immersed in art culture and undertake drawing and studio workshops, producing an art journal. Students visit leading art galleries, museums, bookstores, art shops and significant sites within each city. On return to Melbourne, participants are invited to participate in an exhibition of the travel journals at the Latrobe College Gallery. Programs: 2016 New York City 19 Sep - 29 Oct 2017 Venice Biennale 25 Sep - 6 Oct Dates are during the mid semester break. LATROBE COLLEGE GALLERY The gallery has a history of exhibiting established independent artists and students from LCAD. The space provides a unique opportunity for students to experiment with ideas and learn practical skills for future exhibition practice. The gallery has multiple areas suitable for all media and installation work, including a dedicated screenspace. The college supports past students and graduates with exhibitions of their work. LATROBE COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN LaTrobe College of Art and Design is an independent college and key provider of specialist courses in art, design and digital media. Established in 1995, the college is renowned for its commitment to art practice and education. The college provides a flexible learning environment, combined with recognised teaching programs. Students are given the opportunity not only to develop specific skills but to experiment with different art making modes and refine their creative paths. The college but seeks to set the benchmark for innovation and creative difference. Courses are contemporary, balance skills based training with applied creative direction. Each student enjoys the opportunity to tailor their approach selecting a program that suits the duration and level of development they require. LaTrobe College inspires and equips students to become committed artists and to go onto further study. Over 90% of full-time students who apply for further study have achieved entry into their first or second university preference, with many successfully achieving acceptances for 100% of their applications. The consistent success of past students who are regularly exhibiting or working in their chosen design fields is a testament to the vitality and relevance of LaTrobe College s programs and teaching staff. 4
5 SUBJECT DESCRIPTIONS PAINTING METHODS & TECHNIQUES In this comprehensive subject students gain a thorough understanding of painting techniques and methods. Emphasis is placed on the nature of observation and the way it is utilised in painting. Drawing on a wide range of contemporary and historical examples, students gain a theoretical understanding of painting and develop a critical awareness of individual skill and proficiency. Methods and techniques covered include handling of oil paints, use of opaque and transparent pigments, colour mixing and selection, and preparation of painting surfaces such as canvas. Students also explore various approaches to paint application including blending, glazing, scumbling, wet in wet, encaustic (wax) and impasto. ADVANCED PAINTING METHODS This subject allows experienced students to embrace individual interests and ambitions through the development of artwork projects. A comprehensive range of advanced painting methods and skills are covered and work from the figure is conducted in this subject. DRAWING & MIXED MEDIA In this subject students explore both fundamental methods and alternative approaches in drawing. Students develop skills and increase their vocabulary of drawing techniques. Teachers guide participants to harness individual drawing tendencies through working with life models and elements in indoor and outdoor environments. Experiments are conducted in wet and dry media including biro, charcoal, graphite, chalk pastel, ink, collage, paint and photography. DRAWING & IDEAS This subject is for intermediate and advanced level students looking to develop skills, strategies and ideas through general and conceptual drawing. In this subject students are taught to translate investigation and research into developed concepts, employing their individual visual language throughout the process. Participants also engage in group critiques and discussions on contemporary drawing practice with a view to enriching their own creative projects. Drawing & Ideas is normally undertaken at a 2nd year level of study. STUDIO ART This is a practical and theoretical subject for beginners and intermediate level students of contemporary art practice. This subject encourages students to explore a wide range of methods and ideas whilst receiving advice and support to identify and foster their own interests. There is an emphasis on developing an individual practice in conjunction with projects and exhibitions. Studio Art is invaluable for students working to develop a folio as well as those seeking the opportunity to become involved in exhibition projects. STUDIO PRACTICE AND DEVELOPMENT This intermediate to advanced level subject follows on from Studio Art. Students gain an increased understanding of their individual creative process. They are given guidance and support to develop a strong relationship between the student s ideas and the methods and materials they employ. The relationship between an individual s practice and art practice of today is explored through discussion, critique, visiting artists and gallery visits. Studio Practice and Development equips students with the skills to cultivate ideas and generate new directions within the established forms of their work, increasing their understanding of their growing art practice. SCULPTURE & INSTALLATION Students develop fundamental skills in sculpture including modelling in clay and plaster. Playful use of materials and forms ais initiated through traditional and alternative approaches to scale, shape, rhythm and dynamic. Students develop a sound knowledge of established sculptors and contemporary directions in sculpture. Participants have the opportunity to extend their practice using found materials and other media. Individual approaches are encouraged and teachers provide guidance on developing existing concepts. Sculpture and Installation is suitable for beginners and experienced participants. 5
6 SUBJECT DESCRIPTIONS Cont MULTIMEDIA IMAGING & GRAPHICS This subject provides a comprehensive introduction to Adobe s Creative Suite. Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign are the leading creative software packages across the design, art, photography and publishing industries. Through a series of tutorials and creative projects, students build a solid tool kit for use in designing outcomes to a professional standard with polished finish. Areas covered include digital imaging of photographs and artworks, effective file management for print and web, logo design and type and publication layout. ART HISTORY Twentieth Century Modernism: This subject provides an introduction to the major art movements that established a foundation for modernism in art practice. Students explore Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Cubism, Fauvism, Dada, Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism and the subsequent variety of strategies that culminated in Conceptual Art in the 1970s. Contemporary Art: In this subject students investigate the revival of painting in the 1980s and the pluralism of approaches to art practice that now characterise the contemporary scene. Emphasis is placed on the current discourse in visual art with a focus on deconstruction, post-colonialism, gender and global issues. interactive art. Participants create photographic and/ or video works and investigate installation or interactive online projects. Photography A is a recommended prerequisite for this class. GALLERIES & EXHIBITION PRACTICE This subject introduces students to professional practice. Participants examine a variety of Melbourne-based art-spaces (contemporary, traditional, commercial, public and artist-run). Through investigation, students develop their own understanding of the art world and gain insight into where their work sits in the context of a contemporary art environment. Galleries & Exhibition Practice enables students to develop career strategies and skills in approaching galleries, applying for awards and prizes, and documenting work. Students also learn about gallery representation and how to develop exhibition proposals, artist statements and CVs. Regular gallery visits and talks by gallery directors and artists are a fundamental part of this informative and valuable subject. PHOTOGRAPHY A This fundamental exploration of photography provides students with knowledge in camera usage, image capture and digital manipulation using Adobe Photoshop. Conceptual approaches to photography are explored and students are encouraged to develop unique responses to a variety of photographic projects. PHOTOGRAPHY B In this subject a range of DSLR finishing techniques are explored using Adobe Photoshop and other video based software. The critical appraisal of trends in contemporary photographic art is explored through lectures, workshops and attendance at exhibitions. Students also examine sound, video, installation and 6
7 COURSE ENROLMENT HOW TO APPLY Year Start entry - starting 22 February / Mid-year entry - starting 27 July Applicants must apply to the college directly and not through VTAC. All prospective students are to meet with the Coordinator or college teaching staff to discuss their application and show examples of their artwork. This may include drawings, paintings, design work, photography or anything else that a student has. Overseas or interstate applicants can send examples of their work by . It is always best to contact the college to determine course place availability if applying late. The college will reply to your application with an Information Kit about the course and living in Melbourne. Students will need 5.5 IELTS test score for English or equivalent if English is their second language. This may be completed after the application process or before the student begins their course. The college will send successful applicants a Letter of Offer and issue a COE (Certificate Of Enrolment) to the student once the college receives the signed Acceptance Agreement Form (attached to the Letter of Offer) and a deposit or part or full payment of fees. The quality and diversity of artwork produced by students and the pace with which many develop has long been acknowledged. Many students have achieved success through prizes, exhibitions and course offers to select universities in Australia and overseas. All of these accomplishments are a testament to the high level of teaching and visiting artists that the college has attracted since the college s inception in Our current teachers include: JANE COCKS: Studio Art and Studio Practice Jane Cocks is the Head of Art at Latrobe College. For over twenty-five years she has tutored and lectured at various institutions including VCA, RMIT, Monash, CSU (NSW) and ANU (Canberra). Jane has acted as Head of Drawing at VCA and has worked as an outside assessor for MA students at Monash Uni and VCA. Her work is included in private and public collections throughout Europe, Argentina and Australia, including the NGV. She has been a recipient of the Dame Elizabeth Murdoch Travelling Fellowship and Australia Council Awards including residencies in Paris and New York City. Michael has held solo shows in Melbourne, New Zealand, and at the University of Illinois (USA). He received a Fulbright Scholarship to study Rembrandt in Amsterdam in His work is featured in collections throughout Australia, Europe and the USA. HONOR BRADBEER Drawing Studied at L Accademia Italiana, Florence; SangMyung University, Seoul, 2001; Fine Art BA, RMIT, 2003; MFA, RMIT, Honor has exhibited in Melbourne, Sydney and Hong Kong. Her work is featured in The National Gallery of Australia s printmaking collection and in private collections throughout Australia, Europe the UK and the USA.ince 2004 she has taught drawing at various institutions including RMIT, LCAD and AAD. GREG PENN Photography Greg Penn is the Head of Photography at Latrobe College. He has received of the Linden Postcard Award, Friends of VCA Award, and the Most Innovative and Best Interpreted Awards from MUDfest. He has exhibited work throughout Australia, New York and the UK and his work is represented in private collections internationally. His work is part of the Melbourne Now exhibition at the NGV in ELLIOT HOWARD Art History and Theory Numerous exhibitions and curatorial writing projects in Europe & Australia. Elliot taught in art and art history at Kingston University, London and City Lit London. He is currently Coordinator of first year in the BA Fine Art of La Trobe University and teaches art theory at LCAD Melbourne. 8
