1 Call to Artists - Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County Project: Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places/Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County Donor Recognition Feature Funding to be Determined Pending Design Requirements Location: 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL Deadline: February 29, 2016 Eligibility: Open Call to all professional artists residing in the United States. Applications from architects, landscape architects or other design professionals will not be considered unless included as part of an artist-led team. Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County (Arsht Center) and Miami- Dade Department of Cultural Affairs through its Art in Public Places Program request qualifications from professional artists to create a signature, permanent work of public art that will recognize and celebrate significant patrons of the Arsht Center. PROJECT DESCRIPTION Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County 1300 Biscayne Boulevard Miami, FL Now celebrating its 10th anniversary season, the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is a cultural magnet offering great performances to audiences of all ages and backgrounds. Set in the heart of downtown Miami and designed by world-renowned architect Cesar Pelli, the Arsht Center is one of the world s leading performing arts organizations and venues. Since opening in 2006, the Arsht Center, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, has emerged as a leader in presenting innovative programming that mirrors South Florida s diversity as well as a catalyst for billions of dollars in new development in the downtown area. Spotlighting legends and serving as a launch pad for local artists to make their mark on the international stage, the Center presents nearly 500 events each year across its eight flexible, state-of-the-art performance spaces. The Center programs 12 signature series, including the largest jazz series in South Florida, the biggest flamenco festival on the East Coast, a premier classical music series, and a robust program of new theatrical works; as well as free programming for the community and an arts education program that serves nearly 30,000 children each year. The Center is also home to three resident companies, Florida Grand Opera, Miami City Ballet,

2 and New World Symphony America s Orchestral Academy. For more information on current programming and historical information, please visit In 2006, Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places completed seven monumental, award winning works of public art for the Arsht center, including Jose Bedia s Untitled terrazzo floors and balcony railings for the lobbies of the Sanford and Dolores Ziff Ballet Opera House and the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall; Cundo Bermudez tile mosaic mural, Ways of Performing, located in the lobby of the Carnival Studio Theater; Gary Moore s exterior terrazzo plaza entitled Pharaoh s Dance, found on the south west corner of the Ziff Ballet Opera House; Anna Valentina Murch s Water Scores, which stretches across the Parker and Vann Thomson Plaza of the Arts; and Robert Rahway Zakantich s Hibiscus Curtain and Green Lace Scrim, which grace the interiors of the Ziff Ballet Opera House and Knight Concert Hall, respectively. In keeping with the curatorial direction of the existing works, new public art commissions for the Arsht Center will portray the highest standards of aesthetic and artistic quality. Possible Locations for Public Art-Donor Recognition Feature Estimated Project Budget: To Be Determined Depending on Design Requirements The Arsht Center seeks to commission a visual artist to design an innovative art work that will celebrate and honor patrons of significant new gifts to the Center. There are existing donor walls in the facility honoring original capital campaign donors. This project is envisioned to honor new donors to a fund-raising campaign that is ongoing and will end in The scope will include the listing of 125 to 150 names of donors making gifts ranging from $50,000 to several million dollars. The donor feature should clearly reflect the hierarchy of size of gift. For design purposes, the following table describes approximate number of gifts at various levels Likely Number of Gift Level Gifts $25,000, $10,000, $5,000, $1,000, $500, $250, $100,, $50, In collaboration with Miami-Dade Art in Public Places and as a starting point, the Arsht Center has identified two locations for the possible integration of the donor recognition feature. The decision to implement opportunities will be based upon the artists site specific project proposals and the recommendations of the Miami-Dade Art in Public Places Professional Advisory Committee. The yet-to-be-determined estimated project budget for this opportunity will be inclusive of all costs to design, fabricate, install and implement the art project(s).

3 Lighting/Projection Design for Interior Lobby Wall It is envisioned that an artist may wish to create a site specific light installation that will transform the interior walls of the Ziff Ballet Opera House and/or Knight Concert Hall into a space for donor recognition. The design should artistically depict the names of patrons, enhance the lobby space and create public recognition for significant donors. In approaching the treatment of the interior lobby, the artist may wish to integrate a dynamic lighting or interactive projection system. The design and imagery should reflect a strong aesthetic and work harmoniously with the existing architecture. If choosing interior lighting components, it will be important for the artist to consider the visibility of artwork during daylight hours. Artistic Intervention on Exterior Glass Facades It is envisioned that an artist may wish to create a site specific art glass installation that will transform the exterior walls of the Ziff Ballet Opera House and/or Knight Concert Hall into a creative space for donor recognition. The design should artistically depict the names of patrons, enhance the exterior entrance spaces and create public recognition for significant donors. In approaching the treatment of the glass facades, the artist may wish to consider treatments that can easily be applied to the existing glass walls. It is important to note that the glass is visible from both the exterior plazas and interior lobbies. The design and imagery should reflect a strong aesthetic and work harmoniously with the existing architecture.

Anyone applying to the Call will be expected to comply with advertised deadlines. Professional visual artists that demonstrate innovative, contemporary and creative approaches in addressing permanent, site specific works are encouraged to apply. The strength of the artist's concept, design capabilities and established track record of museum/gallery exhibitions are the program's highest priorities. Artworks commissioned by the Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places Trust should add value to Miami-Dade County s public art collection, attract national attention, vitalize our County s visual signature, celebrate the diversity and heritage of Miami- Dade County, strengthen economic development and tourism, heighten civic identity, and enrich the spirit and pride of our citizens. Miami-Dade employees, as well as selection panelists and panelists immediate family members, are excluded from participation in this public art project. ABOUT MIAMI-DADE ART IN PUBLIC PLACES Art in Public Places is a program of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs responsible for the commission and purchase of artworks by contemporary artists in all media. One of the first public art programs in the country, Miami-Dade Art in Public Places was established in 1973 with the passage of an ordinance allocating 1.5% of construction cost of new county buildings for the purchase or commission of artworks, educational programs and collection maintenance. The Art Trust Fund is administered by a County Commission-appointed citizens board, the Art in Public Places Trust, in consultation with its Professional Advisory Committee. 5 Selection Process It is anticipated that a three-member group of arts professionals drawn from the Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) will identify a small number of finalists who will be paid an honorarium of $1000 to develop specific proposals prior to final selection. The primary criteria for finalist selection will be previous artistic accomplishment as demonstrated in images of previously completed artwork, public art experience, and/or initial approach to the project as demonstrated in the preliminary statement. If appropriate, the PAC reserves the right to recommend artists directly from initially submitted applications. Selection Panel Appointed by the Art in Public Places Trust, the PAC is a national panel composed of professionals in the field of art, public art, architecture, art education, art history, or architectural history. A three-member group will be drawn from the PAC to review all artists work responding to this request and recommend one or more artists for commission by the Trust. HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR WORK Application Deadline Submissions must be received as a complete application in CaFÉ by no later than MONDAY, FEBRUARY 29, 2016, midnight. 1. Submission Process Submissions must be received as a complete application in CaFÉ by no later than Monday, February 29, 2016, Midnight EST. All materials will be submitted online, via CaFÉ. There is NO application fee to apply or to use the CaFÉ online application system. To view the application, go to register a username and password, navigate to Apply to Calls, and search for Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places. All submissions must be received as a complete application in CaFÉ. Assistance in using the CaFÉ system is available during regular business hours via at café@westaf.org 2. Ten (10) images of previously completed work, this may include details. Please accurately identify medium, dimensions, date, location, client/agency, size, budget, completion date, and a brief written description. The CaFÉ system will prompt you to enter this information with each uploaded image. Only images of completed works will be reviewed. The PAC will not review images of unrealized proposal renderings. The submitted work samples should reflect artistic excellence, innovation and originality, as evidenced by professional quality of craftsmanship and mastery of skills, techniques utilized; professional approaches to processes and presentation, and/or communicate a unique vision or perspective. NOTE: Artists who work in video, sound, installations and kinetic sculpture may submit a 3 minute video, audio or dynamic media file in lieu of still images to further describe their work. Artists must submit a complete the application and upload a video file representing the visual component of the work to the CAFÉ website. Maximum length is 3 minutes total. 3. Artist Statement Explain in no more than 5000 characters: the body of work, your philosophy, technique, or other information not apparent through the slides/images that may aid the PAC in more fully comprehending you as an artist or your work in general. This should be a summary of your artistic focus and professional career, especially as your background relates to your qualifications for this project. Please do not include a written proposal for this project. 4. A current professional resume The artist s professional experience must meet the demands of the project. Qualifying activities would include some combination of the following: education and training as a professional artist, an exhibition record in museums, commercial art galleries, and/or non-profit art spaces, previous public or private commissions; participation in artist-in-residency programs, or other related activities indicative of a professional art practice. If

6 you are applying as a team, please include your team/studio resume. If that is not available, please combine the individual resumes (one right after the other) of each team member into one document. Assistance in using the CaFÉ system is available during regular business hours via at café@westaf.org ELIGIBILITY The project is open to experienced professional artists residing in the United States. Miami-Dade employees, as well as selection panelists and panelists immediate family members, are excluded from participation in this public art project.
