The Painted Coast is a collection of contemporary landscape paintings of the north coast of Oregon. These works are a direct response to the nature of the coast, not only the ocean front but the hidden places just beyond. I love paint and how it works on both canvas and paper. I strive to create a painterly space, a response to what I see, and to hold the experience of looking. ~ Storms, Stories and Songs, A Celebration of Cannon Beach The 2010 winner of the Individual Artist Grant, Patrick Lathrop will present his original musical at the Coaster Theatre in June and Patrick Lathrop early July. Free admission. Saturdays, June 25 & July 2 at 12 noon. 5 President s Message It s here! Our 25-year landmark. September 16, 1986, a handful of visionary artists and art lovers who felt the heart and soul of this magnificent natural setting spoke best through art created the wheel of the Cannon Beach Arts Association, dedicated it to supporting and promoting arts and artists, and sent it spinning forward into the next century. It rolled to different locations, showrooms here and there in town, even a memorable temporary stop in a trailer as Art in a Box. Literally hundreds of locals over that time poured volunteer time and energy keeping CBAA moving along. Artists created work for exhibits; some now-professional ones got their start showing at CBAA s gallery. Gallery directors chose shows, gathered member supporters, hung art month after month and oversaw daily operations. Its boards of directors watched over its progress as stewards of $1000 s given out to art activities and art scholarships. Volunteers concocted clever fundraisers. Gallery committee members helped design themed, curated and open shows. Dozens upon dozens of docent volunteers gave thousands of hours greeting gallery guests and selling art. Children learned art skills in summer camps and school through CBAA. Money to keep it going came from the city government itself, from financial backers in local businesses, grants and bequests, and devoted member sponsors, many dating from founding days. Truly, it took a village to raise this child. So it s time to celebrate! On Friday, September 16, 2011, our Silver Anniversary Open House and Fundraiser 5-9 pm is being held at the gallery for anyone who has given or done anything at any time this past quarter-century. In CBAA s honor, Wear Silver (even a foil hat will do!); if you d like, Bring Silver (nickels, dimes and quarters or even green!); and Win Silver (donated silver items we ll raffle or auction that night!). Champagne plus more will help us to roll CBAA into its 2 nd quarter-century. More to come in a later mailing, but mark your calendars. After all, we ll be celebrating Cannon Beach, the arts and YOU! ~Prudence Farrell Your Membership is Important The Cannon Beach Arts Association celebrates its 25 th anniversary and our mission is as important as ever: supporting, funding and enhancing the arts and artists in Cannon Beach through education, events and exhibitions. Our core programming includes monthly exhibits featuring local emerging and established artists; Summer Art Camp for children and adults; scholarships for graduating high school seniors who are interested in pursuing the arts; and grants for local emerging artists. As a member of the Cannon Beach Arts Association, you become a partner in all this, enriching the cultural life of Cannon Beach. There are some new benefits for members who join or renew during our summer membership drive. Members already enjoy special advantages: monthly mailings, a bi-annual newsletter, reduced tuition for the Summer Art Camp and a 5% discount on any purchase made at the Cannon Beach Gallery. In spite of the fact that we have had to modestly raise membership fees, just to cover costs of mailings, we hope that you will consider supporting us at a level that gets you one of our special premiums. The following summarizes categories of memberships and the privileges that accompany each: Individual Membership: $35 for basic membership privileges. Family Membership: $55 receives a CBAA tote bag designed by Drenda Duff. Supporter: $100 receives your choice of a packet (8) of Don Frank s Little Waves postcards or Nikki McClure s booklet of 15 Take Care postcards. Patron: $200 receives a CBAA tote bag with either both packets of postcards or a signed copy of A Is for Astoria. Sustainer: $350 receives your choice of one of the etchings in our collection, which includes work by Liza Jones, Harry and Hanne Greaver and Marilyn Burkhardt. Sponsor: $500 receives your choice of two etchings from our collection. Benefactor: $1,000 receives a six-print portfolio from our collection of etchings. So, please join, renew or increase your membership at this time. See back page of the Newsletter for a membership form.
