2 Course Descriptions and Teacher Biographies Come to Cortona to learn and experience art! In 2012 the Cortona Experience will offer two courses in different media: photography and watercolors. These courses are designed for artists of all skill levels, whether you are picking up a paintbrush for the first time or honing well-developed camera skills. Your teachers will provide guided instruction in a range of techniques for painting and photography, as well as give individualized critique and feedback. Participants will be encouraged to develop their personal style. For more details, please read the instructors' biographies below. We invite you to meet our teachers, find inspiration, and discover your talent, following in the footsteps of generations of artists who have worked in Cortona before you. Eric Fitzpatrick: Watercolors Eric E. Fitzpatrick has been a full time professional artist for over 35 years. He has taught painting and drawing at the University of Georgia, Hollins University and his alma mater, Virginia Tech. He is equally at home working in oil, watercolor, pastel and a variety of drawing media. He also has expertise in sculpture. Fitzpatrick s works can be found in corporate and private collections in 17 nations around the world. To his peers, Eric is known for his untiring work ethic and a total dedication to artistic growth. Lanny Webb: Photography For over forty years Lanny Webb has photographed both the bucolic beauty of rural landscapes and the aesthetics of the mundane and inconsequential of everyday life. Since 1985 he has taught digital image making and photography at the University of Georgia in Athens and more recently at the UGA campus in Cortona, Italy. He is past associate director of the Lamar Dodd School of Art and is currently head of their Graphic Design Program. His work has been included in over one hundred invitational exhibitions throughout the United States and is in numerous collections including the Georgia Museum of Art, where his work was recently on exhibit in the Knox Gallery. A pre-travel information session will be scheduled in late July 2012.

3 Cortona Experience Fall Itinerary: September 10-20, 2012 Day 1: Day 7: Monday, September 10th ƌʉ Leave the U.S. and arrive in Sunday, September 16th ƌʉoptional travel with instructors Rome, Italy on Sept. 11 or on your own to a choice of Day 2: Tuesday, September 11th ƌʉ Travel to Cortona ƌ Welcome and info meeting ƌ Reception with faculty, followed by dinner Day 3: Wednesday, September 12th ƌʉ Orientation and walking tour of UGA campus and Cortona s historic sites Tuscan cities to visit museums, churches, and other sites of historic, architectural and artistic interest Day 9: Monday, September 17th ƌʉprintmaking workshop ƌ Visit to olive grove and mill, with picnic lunch at the grove ƌ Olive oil tasting at Enoteca Molesini ƌ Classes and workshops Day 10: ƌ Informal Italian lesson Tuesday, September 18th ƌ Dinner with UGA students ƌʉclasses and workshops ƌ Presentation by UGA faculty ƌ Presentation and tasting of Day 4: Thursday, September 13th ƌʉ Classes and workshops ƌ Visit to library to view medieval manuscripts ƌ Bookmaking workshop ƌ Concert of medieval music ƌ Dinner with medieval menu Day 5: Friday, September 14th ƌʉ Visit to local vineyard and wine tasting lunch ƌ Classes and workshops Day 6: Saturday, September 15th ƌʉ Field trip with UGA students, destination TBA hand-crafted Italian liquore ƌ Pizza dinner Day 11: Wednesday, September 19th ƌʉclasses and workshops ƌ Exit exhibition of photography and paintings, handmade books and prints ƌ Celebratory dinner Day 12: Thursday, September 20th ƌʉdeparture (bus to Rome airport) Travel Arrangements and Expenses Cost per person is $2,850, which may fluctuate slightly based on actual group size and rate of exchange at the time of travel. Included in the cost is a non-refundable deposit of $500, which will reserve your space and also serve as your tax-deductible donation to the Friends of Cortona Fund that supports the University of Georgia s Cortona Studies Abroad Program. The cost of the Cortona Experience covers tuition fee, receptions, most dinners, occasional lunches, museum entrances, wine tastings and other cultural/educational experiences, art demonstrations, guest lectures, and ground transportation on field trips and group excursions. Please note: the fee does NOT include airfare, hotel accommodations, personal expenses, art supplies, travel insurance and medical insurance. Lodging We have reserved a block of rooms at the Hotel San Michele, a four-star hotel located in the heart of historic Cortona. The hotel is a modernized Renaissance palace that once housed the Etruscan Academy during the 17th century. Each room features a bathroom, telephone, minibar, air conditioning, and television. A full breakfast is served each morning, which is included with your lodging. We encourage participants to make their own reservations. Mention the group rate for the University of Georgia Cortona Experience. Reservations Class size is limited and places are secured on a first come, first served basis.
