4 Speaker Presentations Tackling organised crime exploring the role of detached youth work Mick Hurley OBE, Specialist Crime Solutions Limited A look at current thinking in relation to tackling organised crime and an exploration of the role of detached youth work in this evolving policy area. Outreach and arts intervention as a tool of engagement with male sex workers Hayley Speed & Christopher Charles, The Men's Room A Reflection on the use of outreach and arts intervention as a tool of engagement with male sex workers. Overview of street/detached work in Europe. Edwin de Boevé, Director Dynamo Overview of street/detached work in Europe 'The Art of Youth Work' Kerry Young This presentation will focus on the core purpose, principles and values of youth work as expressed in The Art of Youth Work and ask the question as to whether the intentions, practice and skills of detached youth workers are or should be different from other kinds of youth worker Working with, or doing to? Insights from Rotherham on childism, the prevention of child sexual exploitation, and work with young people more generally Graeme Tiffany The presentation will dig down into work (both effective and ineffective) with young people exposed to child sexual exploitation, and so clearly on the fringes. It will consider what can be learnt from a deeper analysis of this issue, and offer suggestions of ways forward, not just for work with this group but all young people. Therein, there are insights, for detached youth work, youth work and work with young people more generally - which includes schooling. We might speculate then that learning from work on the fringes can have a wider resonance, and the capacity to catalyse new thinking about education per se. 4 Programme may be subject to change
5 Workshop Information: Hayley Speed & Christopher Charles Same Sh*t Different Day The Men s Room will use the voices of the men we work with. The showing of a film Same Sh*t Different Day will inform a discussion and reflection on the use of outreach and arts intervention as a tool of engagement with male sex workers who are highly marginalised and on the fringe of society. In addition the session will explore the value of delivering outreach as a co production and share some of our outcomes. Bill Cox MBE & Ken Stenton View From The Street This popular workshop allows participants the time and space to explore and share their view from the streets they are working on. This workshop will address your agenda and will explore any current issue or problem facing you in your practice, with a view to offering ideas and strategies for improvement. You may also wish to reflect upon the views of our speakers. Anything you re not sure of? Bring it along and share with other workers in a supportive environment. This is also an opportunity to share ideas and good practice. Emily Collinsbeare Successful partnerships between the public and community/voluntary sector The workshop successful partnerships between the public and community/voluntary sector will through discussion and activities explore the need for robust partnerships across the youth work (and associated) sector. Reduced funding, increased devolvement of commissioning and less traditional youth work create a perfect storm that can be navigated with strong partnerships. Janet Batsleer Precarious Lives: How does youth and community work respond? This will be a facilitated workshop drawing on participants current working contexts but also including some examples from my own current research. I want to explore the feelings associated with practice especially in relation to food and doing good. Don Irving A Practical Toolkit for New Detached Youth Workers This practically based workshop will help those new to the field to explore a range of 5 Programme may be subject to change
6 relevant issues, including: How we go about identify our target groups. Staying safe. Effective practice. How to engage with young people on the street. Being prepared Thinking about the resources we need. Participants will be encouraged in working individual reflection, small group work and some future action planning Simon Whitmore Troubled families Agenda TBC Kerry Young The Art of Youth Work This workshop will be a discussion group addressing the question: Why and in what ways might detached youth workers be better placed to deliver youth work as envisioned in The Art of Youth Work. Vanessa Rogers: Workshop 1: Young people, justice, law and social action This workshop is packed with ideas to explore personal and cultural values around loyalty, friendship, peer pressure, blame and fairness. Emphasis will be placed on finding positive ways to get young people s voices heard, outside of media-fuelled concerns about youth gangs and crime, so that they believe they can make a difference. Topics include exercising the right to peacefully protest, community campaigning and the moral, political and criminal aspects of civil unrest and riots, encouraging a culture of personal and collective responsibility. Participants will be given a FREE VR resource pack. Workshop 2: Targeted youth work exploring risk This is an interactive workshop that offers participants the opportunity to explore the concept of risk and how it relates to targeted detached youth work. The workshop will consider marginalised young people and those considered at risk of offending, looking at risk in terms of vulnerability and gender as well as including activities to explore risk taking behaviour with young people. All participants in this workshop will receive a FREE special FDYW conference mini-resource pack. 6 Programme may be subject to change
