1 Syllabus for Chem 980, Electrochemistry Instructor Dr. Michael Johnson 3071 Malott Hall Lecture Time and Location Lectures will be in room 3059, Malott Hall, 10:00 10:50 AM, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Grading. Four in-class exams (100 points each) One quiz Two take home assignments (50 points each) Final exam Attendance/Participation Total points 400 points 25 points 100 points 200 points 75 points 775 points Exams will be closed book and will be based on assigned homework problems and what we have covered in class. Exam 1 will encompass material covered since the first lecture and Exams 2, 3, and 4 will encompass the blocks of material covered after each preceding exam. The assignments will cover a recent article taken from the literature. The final exam will be comprehensive and is optional. The grading scale will be as follows: 92.0% A 90.0% A- 85.0% B+ 80.0% B 75.0% B- 70.0% C 60.0% D <60.0% F Overall numerical averages will be rounded to the nearest tenth of a percent, and that number will be used to determine your grade. Textbooks and Reference Materials Due to the diversity of methods and approaches to be discussed, there will be no single textbook used. The references that will be used in this class include: Principles of Instrumental Analysis (6 th ) by Douglas Skoog, F. James Holler, and Stanley Crouch (Brooks/Cole) 2006 or

James Holler, and Timothy Nieman (Brooks/Cole) 1997 Laboratory Techniques in Electroanalytical Chemistry, (2 nd edition) by Peter Kissinger and William Heineman (Marcell Dekker) 1996 Electroanalytical Methods, (2 nd edition) by Al Bard and Larry Faulkner, (Wiley), 2000 I have placed on reserve textbooks that may be used if you require clarification of the lecture material or if you would like to read ahead. I unfortunately could find only one copy of Kissinger and only older copies (5 th edition) of Skoog. I am working on obtaining a copy of Bard and Faulkner and the 2006 edition of Skoog to place on reserve. I have included in the syllabus the pages upon which the lectures are based. Since you will need to share, you may need to plan your reading ahead of time. Alternatively, these books are available from Amazon. You may want to purchase a copy of Kissinger or Bard and Faulkner if you anticipate that you will need to have a copy for home use or for future reference. Homework. Homework problems may be assigned, but will not be graded. However, you are strongly encouraged to complete all assigned homework problems. Additional reading may also be assigned. Academic Misconduct. Academic misconduct includes copying work, either on exams or assignments, from another student or source. Unless specifically stated by the instructor, you are to do all of your own work on exams and assignments. Academic misconduct accusations will be pursued to the fullest extent according to Departmental and University policies.
