1 Calendar 2015 IN/2015/ED/66 What is school-related gender-based violence? (SRGBV) is defined as an act or threat of sexual, physical or psychological violence occurring in and around schools and educational settings. It results from gender stereotypes and/or unequal power dynamics between genders. SRGBV includes acts of bullying, sexual or verbal harassment, non-consensual touching, rape and assault. Although both girls and boys can be targets of SRGBV, girls and women are the most vulnerable., in any form, is a blunt violation of human rights. The experience or even the threat of SRGBV often results in poor performance, irregular attendance, dropout, truancy and low self-esteem among schoolchildren. Moreover, SRGBV acts as a critical barrier to the realization of everyone s right to holistic quality education which is fundamental to human, social and economic development. UNESCO aims to contribute to the development of comprehensive evidence-informed policy for the prevention and elimination of SRGBV in and through education. There cannot be equality through education if there is no equality in the school, and this entails an unrelenting fight against all forms of discrimination and violence. School-related gender-based violence reflects wider patterns of violence in society, and is a matter of collective social responsibility. Irina Bokova Director- General of UNESCO

8 Local governance and community leaders must strengthen the education cadre by making them professional, ethical and gender responsive. Strong partnerships between community leaders, school, transport, police, child welfare, and health sectors are needed to ensure the safety of boys and girls to and from schools.

10 School leaders should focus on violence prevention by providing teachers and students with the knowledge, skills, and incentives to create a violence free learning environment. School leaders must develop action plans and robust grievance redressal mechanisms to prevent and address SRGBV.
