Experience in evaluation gained from participation in numerous project evaluation or related activities and involvement in M&E capacity development of students. This keeps me in touch with the topic throughout. 2.2 Research I have been involved in research since 1978 as a Master of Science degree student to date. I am currently involved in research as associate professor at the University of Nairobi and as a freelance consultant. I teach to the Master of Science students the course on development of research proposals, implementation of projects and I also supervise a number of students (even at other universities) in the implementation of research projects. The students come from different African countries including; Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Rwanda, Congo, Ghana, Ethiopia and Kenya. Needs Assessment and Baseline Surveys Taking a leading role in at least seven and eight needs assessment and baseline surveys respectively. Conducting two reproductive health service health facility-based baseline surveys in 64 facilities: 2001 and Senior Lecturer- University of Nairobi, 1997 to June 2005 Head, Applied Nutrition Programme, University of Nairobi, Kenya 1996 to 2001 Responsibilities: Programme implementation/ teaching/lecturing, supervising research, conducting research, soliciting/expending funds, writing budgetary reports, recruiting MSc students from Africa Region and liaising with development partners including donors. Achievements include: Programme Implementation: Overseeing the daily running of the programme since1996 as the head of the programme. As its head, was able to develop project management and human resource skills (responsible for 42 master of science students and over 12 staff). This is a period in which the programme experienced the highest student intake (1999) since its inception in For 12 years was responsible for recruitment of students- from all over Africa for the MSc programme. Successfully negotiated for scholarships and funding for students research projects or income generating assignments for sustaining the programme s running expenses, such as acquisition/maintenance of computers, sustained access to internet, telephone, transportation. Funding came from various organizations including DANIDA, UNICEF, CARE, DAAD and CRS. One success story is that it earned the programme an on-going chance to get six scholarships per student intake from AFAA/DAAD. Developed a monitoring system for informing the University on the students advancement towards completion of the MSc programme by tracking progress using set benchmarks. 5
6 Supervised over 40 successful students research-based theses resulting in award of MSc. degrees. Through teaching of the following courses, among others, to MSc students; development of project/research proposals, community problem diagnosis (including actual fieldwork), nutrition interventions and programmes (including their monitoring and evaluation), nutritional anthropology, nutritional anthropology and proceeding on to assisting students in proposal write-up including development of budgets and implementation of surveys, through data analysis and interpretation of findings to preparation of theses has given me strong skills in these areas. Integral to this has been the experience of dealing with adult learners. Have published (solo/co-authored) 12 articles in peer-referred journals and six in conference proceedings, contributing to strengthened writing skills.
