4 Angus Council School Leaver Programme Lisa Gilfillan, EDS Angus Council Tel: Until End March 2015 *15-19 This is a transition programme incorporated Young People identified as High Risk leaving within the Angus Offer to ensure that all young school without an agreed offer of continued people leaving school have the support they learning in place. need to access employment and learning opportunities. Community based delivery These are generally delivered once per year commencing in May School Leaver Programmes are generally attended in the lead up to a young person s involvement in an Activity Agreement and progression takes place as identified within young people s Individual Learning Plans (ILP s). The programme duration is 4 weeks, 5 days per week young people per programme May School Leaver Programmes provide, group based activity for young people who require additional support before making a successful transition into a mainstream learning or employment opportunity or an Activity Agreement should they require further support. They are personal development programmes designed to enhance and further develop employability skills, further increasing a young person s readiness to enter the world of work. A range of partners can contribute to the delivery of these programmes based on the needs of the group. December

Young people will receive one-to-one support from a dedicated Prince s Trust Staff member to help them get the most from their experiences. The programme continues for as long as it s needed. 6 ASET The Supported Employment Team Craig Mullay, Manager, Social Work Department, Lochlands Resource Centre, 2 Cairnie Road, Arbroath, DD11 3DY mullayc@angus.gov.uk Adults with a learning disability and/or on ASET work in partnership with other organizations to the Autism spectrum Angus Wide facilitate employability courses for adults with a learning disability and or ASD. The courses are designed to build individuals confidence, activate drive and self realization. The courses focus on supporting individuals to develop interview techniques and skills in writing application forms. Work experience, training and work trials are negotiated with local employers. The team delivers a wide range of effective job finding and marketing techniques within the supported employment process. Job coaching is provided by the team to assist the person to learn on the job. The level of support varies in accordance with the needs of the individual and the employer. ASET have been progressing the development of the Working Interview process which removes barriers to employment for adults with a learning disability and or ASD. A Working Interview enables the individual to demonstrate their skills and abilities on the job instead of a formal interview. Individuals undertaking supported permitted work are supported to correspond with the Disability Employment Advisors and the Benefit Delivery Centre. Ongoing ongoing ASET supports adults with a learning disability and or on the Autistic Spectrum (ASD) to achieve

7 their full potential through a model of flexible support that enables people to overcome barriers to employment. The team works in partnership with individuals, employers and other organizations to create a socially inclusive and diverse workforce. 3

This may include informal support to enter the employment market, preparing application forms, interview skills, training or support to sustain their present employment in light of the pressures of caring. The service remains in contact with carers providing them with ongoing support. This includes advise in relation to money/benefit advice etc. Ongoing Established in 1996, the Carers Services is part of the Princess Royal Trust for Carers and provided a range of information, advice and support services for adult and young carers. The Transition Programme has been developed to provide employability support services to both existing and former carers. 5

The programme usually lasts between 9-10 weeks young people per programme Demand led Playmaker Programmes involve young people developing literacy, numeracy and employability skills through the medium of sport related activities and will have an opportunity to achieve the day Certificate in Sports Leadership and a first aid at work certificate. 6

12 Get Ready for College Dundee & Angus College Hannah Cosford, Student Services, D&A College SDS Combines 121 support and group activities College support and Academic staff TC/AC team Angus College August 2014 FT College course 2 ½ days and 1 full day. Participants/Learners August 2015 GRFC rationale Through discussion and the shared experiences of staff from Skills Development Scotland and Dundee & Angus College Student Services it was identified that there was a need to offer some additional support to those most vulnerable students in order to support their successful transition to college. This is the 5th year that we have run a programme of activities in August as a partnership between Skills Development Scotland and Dundee & Angus College. SDS and Student Services staff identified 24 students (of which hopefully half will attend) who may benefit from this additional support between May and August It is likely these students may come from the following key target groups of young people Care Leavers or Looked After young people Young people who have been attending Off Site School Provision Young people living independently or at risk of homelessness Young people with Mental Health issues Young people with Drug/Alcohol issues Young Offenders Young people with Learning Difficulties Young people with Physical Disabilities Young people with Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties Student Support Staff and SDS Key Workers will have individual meetings with identified students during June/July and maintain contact and offer support prior to commencement of the Get Ready For College Programme to aid the transition process. It develops team work and interpersonal skills and enables participants to undertake basic maintenance. Participants are also encouraged to make contact with employers and try to raise sponsorship to enable the bikes to be used in real motorbike events. Participants can also apply to join the staff at these events and put their mechanical skills into practice. Participants develop new skills and explore their own personal capabilities through participation within the group and explore progression routes. December

Students following Small Animal Care programme will also undertake an Introduction to Animal Handling and Introduction to Animal Husbandry. Those following Hospitality will have an opportunity to undertake the REHIS Elementary Food Hygiene Certificate at the end of the programme and Students following the IT programme will be offered further opportunities to enhance their skills through IT courses at Angus College. Recognising your resources and potential Building your confidence and being more assertive. Holistic approach Helping to unlock hidden skills focusing on your wellbeing. Overcoming barriers and facing fears Ongoing Penumbra is a leading Scottish Voluntary Organisation working in the field of mental health. We provide an extensive range of person centered recovery based support across Scotland. The focus of the project is to help you recover from a mental health problem and to learn ways of helping you to stay well. People who use the project can be experiencing mild, medium or severe mental health problems and require support for a period of time to help rebuild 12

In conjunction with this young people can achieve their Youth Achievement Award. We also offer weekly job search drop ins and 1:1 support when required. 13

Social and behavioural issues are addressed through one to one support sessions from specialist college staff and developing coping strategies for future independent decision making. Group work increases social interaction, team working, negotiation and compromise skills, problem solving and innovation/creativity. Confidence is built by achievement of academic course content core skills of, numeracy and communication,separately certificated up to Higher level. Programme includes City & Guilds Certificate in Personal and Social Skills, addressing areas such as crime, personal presentation, drugs, alcohol, environmental awareness, enterprise and healthy living. Vocational tasters now in-built to chosen areas of the curriculum to help to make informed progression choices... Some vocational content incorporated to develop awareness of co-worker dependence on each person doing their tasks (teamwork, accountability, reliability, commitment etc) through level 1 SVQ Business & Administration units and PC Passport to develop IT skills which are fully transferable into any vocational career choice. Partners include mental health workers, social work, police, schools, parents, SFSW, carers and other agencies involved in the support of the young people. 14

Concentration on barrier removal through appropriate support in 1-1 situations where necessary and group work. Curriculum content includes SQA s Scotland in Focus Module and City & Guilds Award in Personal and Social Skills. With input from student support services we work closely with schools, mental health agencies, social work, parents, SFSW, carers and other agencies involved in the support of the young people. Our courses and resources are adapted to meet individual needs. Some adults will need individual support to engage in educational activities within college, this must be in place prior to starting. We also offer opportunity classes for adults with profound and complex needs; this can be discussed on application. December

This raises awareness of coworker dependence on each person doing their tasks (teamwork, accountability, reliability, commitment etc) and need of client/customer. Additional locally devised unit on Employability also delivered. We work closely with mental health, social work, schools, parents, SFSW, carers and other agencies involved in the support of the young people. December

Volunteers who have progressed into positive destinations are encouraged to become peer volunteers and mentors for new participants. Students will study and explore citizenship and employability skills. Work experience is part of this course and students will be expected to keep a personal log of this to add to their achievements. 21

Work Experience can be delivered in a variety of ways, from the traditional taster period of a one week work experience placement to a more tailored extended work experience placement (e.g. half a day over a period of time) specific to the young person needs and requirements. 22

Community based ESOL programmes generally operate with taught provision one evening per week and students undertaking further work between classes. The provision offers opportunities for leaning and accreditation at three levels. Accreditation is available at Access 2, Access 3 and Intermediate 1 with a particular focus on using ESOL in transitional context. The programmes take a broad social practices approach, and seeks to help participants develop the English language skills they need to meet the needs of their personal, family, learning community and working lives. Consequently, the balance of content varies according to the make up of the group and their level of English language skill. This provision is available free of charge. There is potential to develop specific tailored provision for groups on a contractual basis. 27

They re then given an introductory guidance pack and information specific to their proposed business ventures prior to being linked up with local business mentors. Thereafter participants are expected to produce a viable business plan and if acceptable they ll then go on to receive the New Enterprise Allowance which is paid at a rate of per week for 13 weeks and a week for a further 13 weeks. Although this is a light touch programme, Claverhouse provides ongoing advice and support to anyone who needs it during and after their period of engagement in the process. Participants are encouraged to attend Business Gateway s start up courses and make use of HMRC s webinars whilst they re developing their business ideas. Youth Business Scotland can also offer support and funding to participants up to the age of 30. December

Core Fund Provision TET (Adult) has a core provision of Personal Development Fund and Childcare Fund. These are applied on a case by case basis for barrier to employment removal. Applications to the Fund are made by TET Key Workers and can be used to fund short vocational training or short term childcare costs where appropriate. Academy Approach In addition, TET (Adult) organises and run a number of Academies throughout the year. These can be sector specific such as Hospitality or aimed at core employability skills. TET has run Academies specifically for the Youth sector. These will begin with motivational course GOALS, followed by one to support from the Key Workers to design an action plan to move forward participants to their chose vocational goal. This can include provision of sector specific accredited training and/or work placements. The Academy itself typically runs for a period of four weeks but Key Worker aftercare support can and is provided for as long as required by the participant. December

It is hoped that this would lead to permanent full Time employment. TET Youth have currently been awarded a small contract to deliver Certificate of Work Readiness 1 4 years Certificate of Work Readiness will run over a 12 week period. April 2013 Modern Apprenticeships offer anyone over the age of 16 the opportunity to work in a paid job while undertaking workplace training, to gain new and enhanced skills and recognised qualifications. The programme is available across a wide range of sectors and the format of training is decided by the appropriate SSC for that sector. A Modern Apprenticeship provides you with vocational training that s relevant to your current employer. Apprentices are supported with training that is appropriate for the level of the job. The Certificate of Work Readiness is aimed at Stage 3 candidates with a view to progressing to Stage 4 Modern Apprentice. There are currently 5 placements open to year olds throughout Angus. Our website will assist young people with career information, understanding their strengths, help with developing CVs etc. Young people seeking a place in training or education can now benefit from telephone support on They can now receive expert, locally focused advice on the opportunities available in the area to ensure they benefit from Opportunities for All. SDS Contact Centre staff will act as the first point of contact between young people or their parent or guardian. If the caller needs are not addressed by the Contact Centre Adviser they will be able to put the caller in contact with the appropriate local centre. SDS engagement starts in school with pupils from S4 onwards. All school pupils are engaged with the universal offer which comprises of two sessions, one on Career Management Skills and one on My World of Work. Thereafter, Careers Advisers work intensively with those pupils who need assistance most and this intervention is tailored to individual requirements. Post school, young people who are not in education, employment or training will continue to work with their Careers Adviser from school until they have progressed into a positive destination or are transferred to a Work Coach. The Work Coach will work with their customers until they are in a positive destination e.g. work, college, and training and will continue to assist that young person to sustain their destination. Referral to a Work Coach is likely to be through the Career Coach with whom they are already working with but may also be through a partner organisation when they are at the stage where they are ready for employment, further education or training. Personal Advisers are available to assist with employability e.g. CVs, interview techniques etc. OUR PROGRAMMES: Employability Fund brings together a number of national training programmes (Get Ready for Work and Training for Work) and provides flexible training support which responds to the needs of employers and local labour markets.
