4 AARHUS, DENMARK The city of Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark situated by the sea in the heart of Jutland. The municipality of Aarhus covers approximately 335,000 inhabitants with an additional 1,200,000 in the surrounding region of East Jutland; this makes it the second-largest region in Denmark. Aarhus has many activities to offer. Each year in late summer, the city centre and parts of the harbour are turned into one large festival. Aarhus Festuge, which the festival is called, has almost become a national event as it attracts people from all over. Each year there is a new theme around which a large number of cultural activities are planned. During this week the city is filled with stalls, outdoor cafés, concerts, street theatre and loads of happy people. Big attractions in Aarhus include ARoS, Aarhus Museum of Art, the Old Town, which is an open air museum and Moesgaard Museum, which is an archaeological collection in idyllic surroundings. Aarhus is a dynamic city. From here, beach, harbour and forest are all only a 15-minute bike ride away. The area around Aarhus also offers the biggest concentration of attractions in Denmark. 5 DANISH SCHOOL OF MEDIA AND JOURNALISM Danmarks Medie- og Journalisthøjskole Danish School of Media and Journalism is a training and knowledge center for the media and communications sector with a focus on talent, lifelong learning and innovation. The curriculum covers the whole media sector offering a wide range of bachelor s and master s degrees, diplomas and further education in journalism, photojournalism, communication, design, media management etc. Currently, more than 1900 full time students are enrolled and almost 4000 course participants enrol in further education on a yearly basis. DMJX has about 170 full time employees. The Danish School of Media and Journalism has 2 campuses - one situated in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, and one in Aarhus, Denmark s second largest city. Campus Aarhus is the largest and oldest institution for the education of journalists in Denmark, and one of the largest institutions for the education of journalists in Europe. The Danish School of Media and Journalism is cooperating very closely with the Aarhus Municipality office for Student Housing (Kollegiekontoret) and the places international students are staying are distributed by Kollegiekontoret. Most students residences are not located in the city centre, but the bus connections and bicycle paths in Aarhus are quite good. Private rooms tend to be more centrally located. Transport The bus system in Aarhus is very efficient. Bus lines to the city centre have bus stops right outside the DMJX. The organisation Midttrafik coordinates buses and local trains in the area. Bus timetables can be bought in the kiosks in town or you can find them on the Midttrafik s website. DSB is the Danish national rail operator. DSB service can be used to travel around the rest of the country, as well as the rest of Europe. However, the best and most popular way to get around is on a bike. The streets usually have designated bike paths and the light signals even come in special, small bike-versions. 7
