2 Introducing Lakeland Arts We are delighted that you are interested in joining the dedicated team at Lakeland Arts. We are one of the most significant arts and heritage organisations in the North and have an exceptional portfolio of attractions in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Lakeland Arts opened Abbot Hall Art Gallery in 1962 and since then has built up a strong reputation for showing national and international artists of the highest quality at Abbot Hall and Blackwell, The Arts and Crafts House. We work in partnership with national organisations including Tate, National Gallery London, Arts Council England Collection as well as collectors and private galleries. Learning is a core activity at Lakeland Arts. The Learning Department was established just four years ago and we are committed to embedding learning across the organisation. Our programme has already received regional and national recognition for innovation. Enriched by Moments is a programme supported by Cumbria County Council, Equal Arts and the Alzheimer s Society. We work with partners to explore ways in which cognitively and emotionally stimulating arts activities benefit both dementia sufferers and their carers. Enriched by Moments is being rolled out to Bowness and Windermere in 2016 and In 2015 we worked with artist and health practitioner Emilie Taylor, and a women s group who explored how Charlotte Perkins Gilman s short story The Yellow Wallpaper related to their personal experiences and to contemporary views surrounding the treatment of mental-illness. The ceramics created out of this process, inspired by individual and shared experience, and from issues in their own lives were exhibited at Blackwell. Community co-production will be key to our programme in the years ahead and you will help to shape that. Abbot Hall is a Grade 1 Listed eighteenth century riverside mansion in a wonderful setting with period rooms on the ground floor and more contemporary spaces above where we show the ambitious programme of temporary exhibition, displays based on our permanent collections or for artist commissions and installations. Learning and engagement activity is delivered throughout the galleries. The Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry in the coach house and stable block at Abbot Hall has extensive displays relating to the social and industrial history of the Lake District and is a great place to discover about the people who lived and worked here in the past, together with a dedicated learning space for groups. Blackwell is a stunning Grade 1 Listed house overlooking Windermere. It is architect MH Baillie Scott s greatest house, retaining almost all of its original decorative features, and it provides a perfect setting for historical and contemporary craft. We have a dedicated learning space and family activities throughout the house. You will also be joining us at a really exciting time as we will be opening Windermere Jetty Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories, following completion of the 16 million capital development. Designed by Carmody Groarke architects, this will be the most significant new heritage visitor attraction in the North when it opens next year. Our mission Inspire all to explore and enjoy arts, heritage and the outstanding places we care for by visiting our museums and participating in a wide range of activities. Our ambition is captured in the Lakeland Arts Strategic Plan : Our strategy over the next few years is to grow Lakeland Arts significantly by opening Windermere Jetty as a world-class visitor attraction. We will improve the quality and variety 2
3 of our artistic, heritage and learning programmes and build existing and new audiences. We will create rewarding experiences for all our visitors and users. We will make Lakeland Arts more resilient by strengthening our business model, improving marketing and broadening fundraising. We will invest in developing our workforce and the organisation s leadership. We currently employ nearly 60 people in full time and part time roles and this number will increase by 2017 when we open Windermere Jetty Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories. Lakeland Arts is an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation (NPO) and Major Partner Museum (MPM) as part of the Cumbria Museum Consortium (CMC) with Tullie House Art Gallery and Museum and the Wordsworth Trust. The Lake District National Park, the countryside outside the Park and the coast are full of great walks, stunning views and lots of places to visit. Sporting and leisure activities include sailing, hill walking, cycling, climbing and running. There are lots of visitor attractions ranging from cruise boats on the lakes, historic buildings, forest parks and nature reserves to top quality celebrity-chef restaurants. It is hardly surprising that this area attracts over 15 million visitors each year. Kendal is a busy market town and boasts the Brewery Arts Centre and a number of cultural festivals. There is easy access by road to Lancaster, Penrith and Carlisle and main line train connections from Oxenholme station in Kendal to London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow. We are proud of the many achievements made by Lakeland Arts since it was formed to save Abbot Hall Art Gallery nearly sixty years ago and due throughout to the dedication and hard work of its staff. 4 Job Description Job Title: Learning and Engagement Officer (adults, community groups and people living with dementia) Salary/Grade: 20,000 Location: Blackwell, The Arts and Craft House, Abbot Hall Art Gallery and Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry Reporting to: Head of Learning Line Management: Creative Practitioners and volunteers Purpose and key objectives You will be responsible for developing, managing and delivering the Lakeland Arts' learning programme for adults, young adults, community groups and people living with dementia. Inspired by our buildings, collections and programme, you will collaborate with colleagues to create inspirational opportunities to increase engagement with new and existing and diverse audiences. Your work with new audiences will also inform strategic developments across Lakeland Arts sites. Key responsibilities 1. To maintain, enhance and develop Lakeland Arts reputation for producing innovative and engaging learning programmes of the highest quality, working with creative practitioners and volunteers. 2. To develop, deliver and evaluate learning activity for adults, young adults, community groups and people living with dementia (both on and off-site activity) within the assigned budget 3. To work with colleagues to create a cohesive programme of learning and engagement and consult a broad range of organisations, community groups, colleges, universities and audiences to shape the programme. 4. Ensure that your activities meet the strategic priorities of Lakeland Arts, liaising with the Head of Learning (HOL), Curatorial Manager and Visitor Experience teams. 5. To co-produce with community members and the programme team the exhibition and display programme; creating opportunities and a range of activities to engage with, develop and diversify audiences. 6. Develop as appropriate interpretative resources for a variety of learning styles to inspire a range of audiences to enhance the visitor experience. 7. To manage partnerships and projects with the Head of Learning and promote Lakeland Arts as a valuable resource for learning; identifying new partners as appropriate. 8. Manage assigned budgets in liaison with the HOL and Finance & Resources Team. 9. Contribute to Lakeland Arts stakeholder events and other activities to promote LA and involve local communities, visitors and key stakeholders in the business and its programming. 10. Manage and oversee volunteers, interns, creative practitioners and artists in relation to the learning programme. This job description outlines the principal responsibilities and duties of the post holder. It is not meant to be, nor is it, an exhaustive list of specific responsibilities and duties. The post holder will be expected to undertake any other duties which could reasonably be expected as being within the remit of the post and 4
5 which arise out of changes of legislation, regulations, orders, rules and working practices, methods and procedures and reviews, as directed from time to time. Additional Information The post is full time, 40 hours per week. Candidates must demonstrate that they can fulfil the requirements of the post. The leave entitlement for this post is 28 working days (made up of 20 statutory days and 8 Public Bank Holidays) The post holder will be required to do some evening and weekend working. As a key member of staff the post holder will be required for events, particularly those connected with responsibilities of the post. The post holder will act as a key holder and will have emergency planning responsibilities as designated in the Disaster Plan for each site and will participate in the on-call buddy system and will be expected to follow security procedures at all times. 7 Person Specification ESSENTIAL Qualifications Educated to degree level or equivalent Experience Relevant experience delivering learning activities in an art gallery, museum or arts venue. Attracting and engaging new audiences through delivery of innovative learning activities, programmes and events in a museum or gallery setting. Developing learning activities inspired directly by art, craft and museum collections to engage visitors Managing creative practitioners and volunteers Delivering engagement activity for adults Nurturing and maintaining strategic partnerships and networks.
