1 CIS Mission Statement: Cayman International School endeavors to provide each of our students the opportunity to achieve his/her academic and personal best within a U.S./International educational environment that encourages and inspires leadership, character, and community service while embracing cultural diversity. CIS Safety CIS takes student safety seriously. We spend considerable time talking about safety, and making certain that students and parents know about our safety precautions. Most recently the school adopted lightning safety procedures. The most likely impact this may have on your children is in regard to swimming lessons, outdoor PE or play periods. The faculty member on duty will monitor the weather and make the decision to suspend outdoor activity in the event of lightning. The decision to suspend activity will be based on the Flash-To- Bang Method (count the seconds from the time the lightning is sighted to when the clap of thunder is heard). Divide this number by 5 to obtain how far away (in miles) the lightning is occurring. If lightning is within 6 miles (there is a 30 second count between flash of lightning and bang of thunder), activity is to be suspended and everyone should seek shelter inside the classrooms. Activities should remain suspended until thirty minutes AFTER the last bolt of CIS Iguana Mascot Logo Design Contest Winners lightning is seen or sound of thunder is heard. CIS practices safety drills several times during the year. The most common drills practiced include fire drills, earthquake drills and lock down drills. Any parents or visitors who are on campus when a drill is held will be expected to follow the same procedures as students and faculty/staff. Recently CIS conducted a fire drill for the entire campus. The students and faculty/staff did an excellent job evacuating the buildings safely, quickly and quietly. In the next several weeks, you can expect that we will hold an earthquake and a lockdown drill. These drills are typically held in schools around the world to emphasize the importance of how to respond in case of an emergency. Parents can continue to help make our campus a safe environment by remembering to check in at the office anytime you arrive on campus between arrival and dismissal hours. We ask that you do not go directly to your child s classroom or to a locker. If you are volunteering in a classroom, you will be given a parent identity tag to wear while you are on campus. Early Childhood Two Stars and a Wish Conferences CIS Early Childhood Two Stars and a Wish parent-teacher conferences will be held on October 12 th and 13 th. All Early Childhood students will be dismissed at 11:30 to accommodate afternoon conferences. Sign-up sheets are available in your child s classroom. Help CIS Support the Lighthouse School Family Math Night was a Big Success! The Cayman Cardboard Boat Regatta (CCBR) is an official Pirates Week event that benefits the Lighthouse School. The charity is in its 4th year of helping to build specialized playgrounds for disabled children who attend the Lighthouse School. This year s event is taking place on November 20 th. Please support the CIS staff who are designing and building a boat this year by participating in Nautical Dress Up Day & purchasing a root beer float to Keep the Staff Afloat! Thank you to all of the families who attended the 2 nd Annual CIS Family Math Night! Everyone had a fantastic time playing the Everyday Math games and using their math skills. Playing math games helps reinforce the math skills taught in the classroom and makes learning enjoyable. Many thanks for your support in making Family Math Night a terrific new CIS tradition! 3 PSAT Update! The date for the PSAT at CIS has changed from Wednesday, October 13 th to Saturday, October 16 th. Please contact the office if you have any questions! High School Movie Night TONIGHT! The Movie Under the Stars has been rescheduled to October 8 th from 7:00 9:30 at the amphitheatre. The movie is the 80 s classic Can t Buy Me Love. Plan on the outside venue; if weather is a concern, we ll meet in the Science Lab. 5 Outstanding Performances! Emily R. Wins Ladies & Junior Divisions in Golf Competition On Saturday, September 25th, 15year old CIS Grade 10 student Emily R., not only won the Junior division of the Cayman Islands Golf Association (CIGA) President's Trophy, but her excellent tournament play and golf score of a net 69, was good enough to claim the Ladies Title as well. She is a rising star on the Cayman Islands Junior Golf Team where she is the only girl. Last summer she represented the Cayman Islands at the Caribbean Junior Championships in Barbados and at the Junior British Open in St. Andrews, Scotland. Congratulations Emily!
