2 Course Registration Forms All current 7th grade students should have: 1) A blue course registration form 2) A yellow course description book

3 Corrections to Course Documents Please make the following correction to your Course Description handbook: On page 4, add Honors to Algebra I At the bottom of your green course registration form, make the following change in the box labeled PARENTS: Please complete and return this form to your child s Science teacher by Monday, January 30, 2017.

4 What information do students need to provide on the blue registration form? Students should review and complete this form with their parents(s). Fill out the top portion with name, current Titan teacher, and parent information. Check selections for elective classes in the box on the right side of the form. A parent must sign the form.

5 Elective Choices for 8th grade Option 1 - Choose two year-long electives: Art I Foundations (high school credit course) Band Grade 8 Chorus Grade 8 Bel Canto Choir (audition required) French I (high school credit course) Latin I - (virtual high school credit course) Spanish I - (high school credit course) Combination of AgScience, Tech Ed, or Inventions/Innovations Students do not take Health and PE under option 1

6 Elective Choices for 8th Grade Option 2 - Choose one year long elective and one of the following semester electives to pair with Health and PE Semester electives to pair with HPE: Introduction to Floriculture Inventions and Innovations 2D/3D Art General Music (Guitar) Music Elective (Percussion)

7 How do students find out more information about the elective class choices? Read the course information in your Course Description Handbook Talk to teachers who teach those courses Art I and 2D/3D Art - Mrs. Hinson and Mr. Worley Band Grade 8 and Music Elective (Percussion)- Mr. Ray Chorus Grade 7 and General Music (Guitar)- Ms. Tidaback Agriscience and Intro to Floriculture- Mrs. Eyre Intro to Tech Ed and Inventions/Innovations- Mrs. Parker

8 New - Earth Science Option Earth Science will be offered to 8th grade students as an additional elective science course. Earth Science is a high school credit course that most students take as 9th graders. It fulfills one of three required science disciplines for an Advanced Studies diploma. It is a necessary course for students who want to take AP Environmental Science in High School. Students take Physical Science 8 as a block class (92 minutes every day) in the fall semester and Earth Science as a block course in the spring semester. There is an end-of-course SOL test for each of these courses.

9 Benefits and Challenges of taking Earth Science as an 8th grade student Benefits Students can earn a high school science credit before entering high school. For students who love science, they can spend 92 minutes of their school day engaged in learning science. Students will have more room in their high school schedule to take additional science classes or additional elective classes. Challenges Students will have an extra academic class in their schedule, which adds a substantial workload Students will have 2 science SOL tests to take in one year Students will be in science class during Advisory/Intervention/Enrichment time and will not get the opportunity to engage in those activities.

10 What about Required Core Classes? All 8th grade students are placed in English 8, Civics 8, Physical Science 8 and a math course Math placement is made by a committee that looks at student s math data and determines the most appropriate course for each student. 8th Grade students can be placed in Math 8, Algebra I Honors, or Geometry Students and parents will be notified of math placement in March

11 Complete and Return Your Form 7th grade students should return their completed form, with a parent signature, to their science teacher by Monday, January 30. Between January 31 - February 2, Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Conaway will visit science classes to help students register for their courses online. Students must have their paper form completed to register online. Direct any questions about course registration to Ms. Weidner, Mr. Byrd, Mr. Honeycutt, Mrs. Parker, or Mrs. Conaway
