5 ACCELERATED/ HONORS COURSES Our honors courses provide students the opportunity to explore the complexities of a given subject area beyond the traditional high school curriculum. There is an assumption that students in these courses are highly motivated and willing to engage in rigorous academic work. Advantages of Honors Courses Weighted grade points The school recognizes the additional demands these courses place upon students by assigning weighted grade points to those who successfully complete an accelerated course. The weighted grade points positively affect grade point average. GPA SCALE Regular: A= 5 B=4 C=3 D=2 F=1 Weighted: A= 6.1 B= 5.1 C= 4.1 D=2 F= 1 Great breadth and depth of content Not only are students able to purse a given course in greater depth, they can advance the sequencing of the content in a given subject at an accelerated rate. The opportunity to interact with other students interested in that subject Students will meet other like-minded, highly motivated students. Enhance College Evaluations Several of the most competitive colleges insist that a student pursue the most rigorous curriculum that the high school has to offer in order to be considered for admission. Opportunity for college-level coursework Students who enroll in Advance Placement (AP) classes are eligible for to pursue college credit upon successfully taking the corresponding AP exams.

6 Link Crew Freshman Mentoring Program Orientation Day: Freshman will begin their school year with a 1/2 day orientation program a few days before the official start of school. Please pay attention to registration packets when they arrive in the mail over the summer about the specific date. Please plan to attend the program from 8am 12 pm in the main gym. On Freshman Orientation day, all ninth grades with meet their freshman year mentor, be involved in a variety of large and small group activities, tour the school, and meet their new classmates. Students will have the option of getting a personalized tour at the end of the orientation. HOW LINK CREW WORKS Almost every week their Link Leader will visit them in their study hall to lead various activities. Some weeks their Leader will visit them during lunch to just hang out and talk. The main goal for the program is to provide every freshman student here at Plainfield Central someone to Link up with and feel more connected to the school. Additionally the Link Crew program also helps various aspects of student life throughout the entire school, including: Bringing a positive culture and energy to the school where students can step up and take the lead on various projects. Helps to decrease the disconnection between the grade levels. Decreases student discipline issues. Empowers students to find pride in their school and community.

8 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. How are my student's placements determined in English, Math and Science? Students are placed in the required freshman courses based on the following: 8th grade schedule, district assessments, standardized test scores, and teacher recommendations. Our Divisional Chair and Associate Principal make it a priority to meet face to face with the 8th grade teachers to determine the best placement for your child. 2. What if I have a question about my student s placement in English, Math, Science, World Language or Special Education? You should contact the Divisional Chair of the specific academic department. The phone numbers are listed in this booklet. 3. What is a normal class load? All Plainfield High School students are required to take 6 courses. Each freshman student will have an English, Biology, Math, PE and 2 elective courses. 4. Should my student take a World Language course during freshman year? If your child possesses self-discipline, strong study skills, and a good work ethic he/she is encouraged to begin a World Language during the freshman year. If, however, your student s study skills need remediation he/she should postpone study of a World Language until the sophomore or junior year. Study of a World Language is not required for graduation but some colleges count it as an admission requirement. 6. What if my student is having difficulties in a class? All remedies to a student having a problem in a class start with the student talking to the teacher. It is advised that a student make an appointment to meet a teacher during free time (before or after school) or during their lunch study hall period to discuss the difficulties. No level changes or drops occur without this first step. Parents are recommended to communicate with the child s teacher throughout the semester. Additional support for certain subject areas may be available during lunch study halls. 7. Should my student take summer school courses? It is not required that a student attend summer school but taking summer school allows a student to get familiar with the building and the high school setting. It also allows a student to create space in his schedule during the school year for an elective course of study. 8. When can my student take Driver s Education? Enrollment in Driver s Education is based on age. The earliest a student can enroll in Driver s Education is the summer prior to sophomore year. The majority of our students are enrolled either semester 1 or semester 2 of their sophomore year depending on their birthdate. If you decide to take Driver s Education privately, your student will be required to take a PE course. 9. Are there late afternoon buses for students involved in sports and activities? Unfortunately the answer is no. However, most students and parents are successful in putting together a carpool to share driving responsibilities. 5. Is World History a requirement? No, World History is not a graduation requirement. Many students take World History as their third Social Studies credit for college entrance requirements. However, we offer a variety of other Social Studies electives to meet the college requirement during your student s junior and senior year. These classes include World Geography, Psychology, Sociology, and Street Law. 10. How much homework should my student expect? One of the trends we notice is that freshman students are shocked by how much homework they have. High school is not middle school. Classes are 56 minutes long, so students will have homework daily. For regular classes, expect 1-2 hours a night of homework. For honors classes, expect more.

9 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS CONT Why did my student s schedule change second semester? Please do not expect your student s schedule to remain the same semester 2. Common changes are having lunch and/or classes at different periods from first semester. This is due to the master schedule, and is not an error. However, we do our best to match up year long teachers and classes. That being said, we cannot accommodate any lunch, teacher, or period changes at any point throughout the year. 12. Can you explain finals? All high school students are expected to take finals. Finals are scheduled the last 3 days of each semester. All students are required to be in attendance. Please look at the school calendar before planning any family vacations. TECHNOLOGY Plainfield Central students are given access to several different technology programs. Every student is provided with a network account, an account, and the Home Access Center. Login information (account names and passwords) should be kept private at all times. Students are also able to access these accounts from home.
