1 Public School Academic and Attendance Calendaring Highlights Source: : Student Attendance Accounting Handbook 3.8 Calendar A school day must be at least 420 minutes each day including intermission and recesses (420 minutes equate to the old 1 day rule) Provide at least 75,600 minutes of instruction (equates to 180 days) Includes intermissions and recesses for students Minus any minutes waived by the TEA in writing up to 4200 minutes (equates 10 days) Or your district has been approved to provide fewer school minutes to certain students through a program such as the Optional Flexible Year Program (TEC, ) Under no circumstances may it offer fewer than 71,400 school minutes (equates to 170 days) Flexibility with: Start and end date and number of days per semester 6-wk reporting periods but must be approximately six equal periods Teacher preparation days Length of School Day A school day must be at least 420 minutes each day, including intermissions and recesses. Open-enrollment charter schools are not subject to this requirement and may have a shorter school day if their charter so provides Early-Release Day Waivers Waivers Related to Students Taking Dual Courses at Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) with Calendars of Fewer than 75,600 Minutes Waivers Related to Students Taking Dual Courses at IHEs with Calendars Beginning before the Fourth Monday in August ATTENDANCE RULES Time of Day for Attendance Taking Each campus must determine attendance for all grades by the absences recorded at the one particular point in time the campus has chosen for roll to be taken (a snapshot, for example, 9:45 a.m.) during the second or fifth instructional hour of the day or its equivalent. The selected time may vary from campus to campus within your district. However, once a time has been selected, a campus must not change it during the school year Alternative Attendance-Taking Time for Certain Student Populations Your campus may choose an alternative attendance-taking time for a group of students that is scheduled to be off campus during the regular attendance-taking time, such as the following (Note that this is not an exhaustive list): dual-credit students who are attending classes at an institution of higher education career and technical education students who are scheduled to be at a worksite Section 11 Nontraditional Programs (as it relates to ECHS) Section 11 Nontraditional Programs Early College High School 19 TAC and A HS model that provides students at risk of not graduating with a blended HS and college curriculum (students earn a HS diploma and 60 college credit hrs tuition-free) Awarded immediately by the PS institution offering the course; recognized by the school district and PS institution based on articulation agreement Eligible The district or charter in which the student is enrolled must pay for tuition, fees, and required textbooks, to the extent those charges are not waived by the institution of higher education No cost to student; a student enrolled in an ECHS course for HS graduation credit must not be required to pay for tuition, fees, or required textbooks 1 To operate an ECHS, districts and PS institutions must receive ECHS designation from the TEA and THECB 2 1 per 19 TAC (d)(3) 2 Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board

Each college and university shall establish its own dates for orientation, registration, holidays, final examinations, and the end of each semester and summer term consistent with this calendar. 4. A public university or community, technical, or state college that begins its fall and spring semesters and its first summer term within 7 days of the date set by the common calendar above is in compliance with the common calendar and does not require a waiver.
