Questions about the Winter Season 8
Wheatland-Chili Athletics Athletic Program Overview Athletics an integral part of education 9
Athletic Seasons Sports offered during 3 specific seasons, Fall, Winter and Spring Fall Season runs from mid-august until late October Winter Season begins in early November and runs until the end of February Spring Season begins in early March and concludes around the end of May 10
Athletic Offerings Offerings are broken into levels of Modified (7 th and 8 th grade), JV (when offered generally 9-10), and Varsity (11-12) Students may occasionally be screened through APP or Athletic Placement Process, which is new this year, to a higher (or lower) level of participation based on skill and physical development Students must maintain Academic Eligibility throughout their athletic career 11
Athletic Offerings Girls and Boys considered 2 offerings for most sports Sports Include: Soccer (B/G), Volleyball (G), Cross Country (B/G), Cheerleading (G), Basketball (B/G), Swimming (B/G), Golf (B/G), Tennis (B/G), Track and Field (B/G), Baseball (B), Softball (G) and Intramurals (B/G) Fall Season: 5 Varsity, 3 JV and 4 modified programs Winter Season: 5 Varsity, 2 JV and 4 modified programs Spring Season: 6 Varsity, 3 JV and 4 modified programs OVERALL OFFERINGS: 16 Varsity Programs 8 Junior Varsity Programs 12 Modified Programs Offerings vary from year to year based on student interest. For example, in 2014 we had no Boys Modified Soccer due to low numbers. In 2015 year we had all three levels. Next year there will be no JV Boys Soccer due to low numbers. 12
Coaching Staff District employees are always encouraged to coach Coaches must possess or be working on NYS Coaching Certification, and meet other requirements including DASA and Fingerprinting before coaching New options this year allow for on-line training through NFHS Coaches are evaluated by the Secondary Principal at the conclusion of the season with feedback from the AD, students and parents Coaching hiring done through Athletic Director and Human Resources Manager When possible, repeat coaches are used for example JV Boys BB coach will be a Varsity Softball coach. 13
Competition We are a member of Section V of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) We compete in the Genesee Region of Section V other schools in our region are Alexander, Attica, Byron-Bergen, Elba, Holley, Kendall, Lyndonville, Notre Dame, Oakfield-Alabama, and Pembroke General season games/meets are done around our league opponents with a few additional games and tournaments. Sectional competition takes place with those in our Class, and many of these schools are in the Southern Tier or Seneca and Wayne Counties This year we primarily compete in Class D (based on our student BEDS number). We are amongst the smallest schools, which poses challenges to scheduling non-league events. We look to schedule non-league games with teams that are geographically close (i.e. Cal-Mum) when possible. 14
Athletic Facilities Working with Facilities Department on new on-line facility scheduling for outside activities (SAA, Wheatland Rec, etc.) MS/HS Gym (Volleyball, Basketball, Cheer) 2 Baseball and 2 Softball Fields 6 Tennis Courts 4 Soccer Fields 2 with lights Track/Stadium with Steeplechase, Shot put and Discus cages 6-lane Pool Very occasional use of TJC fields Use of TJC Gym for Cheer practice and Intramurals 15

Encouraging Healthy Participation Student athletes must follow an Athletics Code of Conduct Students must maintain academic eligibility and be passing all classes in order to compete Students must have a current sports physical on file Wheatland hires Athletic Training Services from URMC the trainer helps with injury prevention and injury recovery We also participate in the online IMPACT testing program for concussion management and safe return to participation always erring to the side of athlete safety 18
Student Participation Wheatland-Chili Athletic Participation is just above the median participation rates for Genesee Region schools For % of students in 7-12 participated in a Fall Sport (same as ) 35.0% of students in 7-12 participated in a Winter Sport (same as ) Historical Data 47% of students in 7-12 participated in a Spring Sport last school year (up from ) 19
Sports Booster Club Follows a written constitution for operations Benefits athletic programs through purchase of additional training equipment, coaches training, and other items that benefit all student athletes (for example: Purchase practice time on artificial surfaces for soccer teams to practice) Entirely volunteer fund raise through concession sales Meet monthly 20

Future Considerations Continuing to improve communication of team successes, etc. Continued updates to eligibility policy, website, and creation of a Wheatland Handbook for each coach. Budgeting - to continue to offer a rich athletic program while considering safety concerns and maintaining fiscal responsibility to the community Looking for opportunities to maintain or expand programs by partnering with neighboring districts. Costs associated with move to new Soccer Stadium and need for new Gym Scoreboard New sports banners for the Gym Offering programs that are appealing to athletes in order to encourage lifelong physical activity, teamwork, and problem solving. We strive to create an athletic environment that builds these skills in order to help our student-athletes to become more adequately prepared for college and career. 23
Questions Are there any additional questions about our athletic programs at Wheatland-Chili? 24
THANK YOU! Thank you to the Wheatland-Chili community and the W-C Board of Education for your continued support of our athletic programs! 25
