1 8 TH GRADE COURSE SELECTION For the School Year

4 To be promoted to 8 th grade: PROMOTION TO 8 TH GRADE You must have an overall average of 70 or higher in all courses. You must also have an overall average of 70 or higher in 3 of the 4 core subject areas: 1. English and Reading 2. Math 3. Science 4. Social Studies Students who do not meet these requirements must either attend summer school or repeat the 7 th grade.
5 COURSE SELECTION PROCESS Take your course selection sheet home to share with your parents. Both you and your parent must sign the form! Return your completed, signed/initialed course selection sheet to your Social Studies teacher by January 25 th. Course verification sheet will be given to you on February 21 st. At this time you will confirm your courses. This is the time to change an elective or course level.
6 COURSE REQUESTS OVERVIEW Course sheets must be turned in to your Social Studies teacher by January 25 th. If you are moving or planning to move, you must fill it out anyway. Both the student and parent must sign the course sheet. All students must sign up for the following courses: 1. English 2. Math 3. Social Studies 4. Science 5. PE or Athletics 6. Two electives and three alternate electives
7 PREAP PROGRAM INFORMATION REQUIREMENTS: Parent approval and the signed PreAP Course Commitment are required to sign up for PreAP courses. Students taking PreAP English must also take PreAP Reading. PreAP Social Studies is recommended for students taking PreAP English and PreAP Reading. NOTE: An A average in the academic class, or a B average in the PreAP class, is a good indicator of future success in a PreAP class. The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.
8 PREAP PROGRAM INFORMATION PreAP courses are designed to challenge motivated students and prepare them for success in advanced coursework. These courses: 1. typically move at a faster pace, 2. are academically challenging, 3. require more independent learning, and 4. require more homework than academic courses. The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.
9 PREAP PROGRAM INFORMATION Students may exit a PreAP course during the first 6-weeks grading period or at the end of the 1 st semester. The student must have teacher and parent approval to exit. If the student s 6-weeks average falls below 70, it is recommended to exit the class at the end of the grading period. The PreAP Course Commitment form is included on the back of the course selection sheet.
10 GT STUDENTS Students must be screened and identified to be eligible for GT courses. GT course will be carried over from last year. WMJH GT Coordinator PamelaMHedegaard-
11 8 TH GRADE ATHLETICS All rising 8 th grade students will be placed in PE. Students may not sign themselves up for athletics. Please see the coach if you are interested in playing a sport in 8 th grade. Coaches will give the counselors a list of students to be scheduled into the athletic period later this semester.
12 Off-Campus P.E Option (P.E Waiver) For students who participate in special and/or accelerated physical activities. Attendance and grade are monitored every 6 weeks with the facility *Application will not be accepted until August. 15 HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES Algebra I (J0211) Art I (J7511) Spanish I, Part 2 of 2 (J6318) Requires completion of 7 th grade Spanish I, Part 1 of 2 Spanish I (J6319) Spanish for Spanish Speakers I (J6361) fall semester, 1 credit Spanish for Spanish Speakers II (J6362) spring semester, 1 credit Semester grades and grade points earned in all high school credit courses become a permanent part of the student s high school transcript.
16 HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES CONTINUED Principles of Human Services (J8353) An introductory CTE course supporting the Public Services endorsement. Principles of Applied Engineering (J8616) The first course in the Engineering pathway for the STEM endorsement. Students who complete this course in 8 th grade may enroll in the second course in this pathway, Engineering Design & Presentation, in 9 th grade. Recommended Co-requisite: Algebra I Principles of Manufacturing (J8043) The first course in the Manufacturing pathway for the Business & Industry endorsement. Semester grades and grade points earned in all high school credit courses become a permanent part of the student s high school transcript.
17 HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT COURSES If you take a high school credit course in 8 th grade, you MUST NOT request the same course in high school. You CANNOT repeat a course for which you have already earned credit. No credit is awarded for a duplicated course.
18 OTHER COURSES Math Lab - designed to help refine and review math skills in preparation for the STAAR test. Reading Elective - designed to help improve reading level and basic reading skills in preparation for the STAAR test. You will be recommended to take these classes if you do not pass the Math or Reading section of the 5 th grade STAAR test. This class will replace your elective.
19 Course selection sheets are due to your Social Studies teacher by January 25 th. Keep your course selection sheet neat and clean. Take good care of it! Choose your courses wisely think carefully about your choices. Don t choose a course because your friend pick it. Talk to your teachers about PreAP placement. Choose the elective that s most interesting to you. List two alternate electives. Sign and return the course sheet on time! REMEMBER!
