1 Synopsis ( ) Principal Mr. Cheung Ka Pong Po Leung Kuk Tang Yuk Tien College was founded in 1987, donated by Madam Lee King Fan in memory of her late mother, Madam Tang Yuk Tien. We are greatly honoured that Madam Lee's daughter, Dr Pai Ming Chu Pearl, has been an Independent Manager of the Incorporated Management Committee of the school since April, On the other hand, Mr Tam Chun Kit, a practising Barrister-at-Law, has become an Alumni Manager since April, The school is an aided secondary school using English as the medium of instruction. It has been striving to provide an all-round education for students and to help them develop their potential to the full, and is highly sought after by parents in the district. It operated 25 classes covering Form 1 to Form 6. The enrolment was 788 and the total number of teaching and non-teaching staff was 86. Academic Achievements Our students had achieved very good results in HKDSE Examination The percentage of students obtaining level 5 or above in all subjects was 35.1%, while the percentage of students attaining level 2 or above was 99.7%. The best individual result was 4(5**), 2(5*) and 1(5). A total of 11 students attained 2(5**) or above and 10 of them were granted the PLK HKDSEE Outstanding Achievement Scholarships. Besides, it was most delighting that 88.2% of our F.6 graduates, a record high of the school, were admitted to local universities and tertiary institutes through JUPAS. Half of them were admitted to the three leading universities of Hong Kong (22 students to HKU, 31 to CUHK and 7 to HKUST). Among them, 4 high fliers were admitted to medicine, a most sought after faculty. All these outstanding achievements indicated not only the hard work of our students but also the great effort of our teachers in preparing them for the public examination. Discipline, Guidance and Civic Education The school had always laid great emphasis on fostering moral values and personality development on the part of students. This year, focus was placed on helping students to develop a purpose-driven attitude, enhancing students self-discipline and improving their sense of responsibility. A wide range of programs had been held by the committees concerned accordingly. First and foremost, a strict but fair and efficient system to maintain school discipline had been established by the Disciplinary Committee. The Student Award Scheme was held to foster students to be more proactive and strive for self-improvement. This year, 351 awards were granted. In addition, 38 conduct awards, 26 service awards, 81 credits and 603 merits were presented while conduct marks were added to the well-behaved students. Both individual and group counseling were provided by the Guidance Committee to students

2 with the support of the school social worker and the educational psychologist. Furthermore, all Form 4 students joined a leadership and discipline training camp organized by Po Leung Kuk. Through different ventures, students feeling of gratitude was fostered and sense of responsibility enhanced. Their enthusiasm and active participation in the programs were highly appreciated by both parents and teachers. Other programs like the BBS Scheme, Project of Healthy Teenager, talks on sex education, workshops on time management and various preventive mass programs were held to facilitate students personality growth, foster proper moral values and to help them deal with challenges proactively. In addition, a Voluntary Service Training Scheme was organized for Form 2 by the Liberal Studies and Civic Education Panel. Students were required to provide voluntary service like paying visits to the aged and the mentally retarded. The Scheme had enabled them to have a better understanding of what happiness means and learn to be thankful for what they had. It also spurred them to take the initiative to show their concern for and render help to the needy and the underprivileged. Talks, workshops, visits to companies and universities, and participation in university summer programs were promoted by the Careers Committee to help students acquire a much deeper self-understanding and facilitate their goal setting and career mapping. For instance, some F.4 students joined the Business-School Partnership Programme with Green Island Cement (Holdings) Limited (a wholly owned subsidiary of Cheung Kong Infrastructure Holdings Limited) while a number of F.4 and F.5 students were subsidized to join tours to HKU-Shenzhen Hospital, some universities and some high-tech companies in Hangzhou and Wenzhou. Students had benefited substantially from these programmes. To sharpen students sense of responsibility, heighten their social awareness and foster them to behave in a more civilized way, programs like Current Affairs Marathon, Environmental Protection Scheme, The Chief Executive Mock Election, the Most Respectful Student Election, Salute to Teachers Day, Bulletin Board Display Competition and Blood Donation Day were organized by the Civic Education Committee. Besides, a Form Teachers Guidance Scheme was organized to provide pastoral care for students with special needs. Furthermore, talks, workshops, principal-parent conferences, and activities like picnics, tai chi, calligraphy and painting classes were held by the Parent-Teacher Association. Extra-curricular Activities To nurture students multiple intelligence, a wide spectrum of extra-curricular activities were run by the Pupils Association, the 4 Houses, 20 school teams as well as 16 clubs and societies. The school s great effort in developing students potential had yielded prominent results in various elections and competitions. 1. Outstanding Students Achievements 1

3 (a) Lau Suet Ying won the Best Devotion to School Award in the 36 th Student of the Year, organized by the South China Morning Post. (b) Chiu Yi Nap was elected as Outstanding Student in The Outstanding Student Election of New Territories. (c) In the Hong Kong 200 Leadership Project, Tse Man Ho, Ho Cheuk Lam and Tse So Yu were appointed as Hong Kong 200 Leaders. (d) In the Tuen Mun Outstanding Students Selection, Poon Wing Ching and Chung Yuen Lam were elected as Outstanding Students whereas Man Ho Ching, Fok Wing Shuen and Tse Man Ho got the Merit Awards. (e) In the Tuen Mun High Fliers Election, Wong Hiu Nam and Tse Man Ho were elected as High Fliers. (f) Chan Wing Yu was appointed as UNICEF Young Envoy. (g) In the 4C Youth Volunteer Leadership Project, Chan Chung Man was appointed as Outstanding Youth Volunteer Leader. (h) Cheung Kai Yiu and Chan Hiu Ying were elected as Junior Financial Secretaries. (i) Wong Cheuk Yiu and Chan Long Yin were elected as the Most Respectful Students whereas Cheung Ho Yin and Poon Wing Ching were elected as the Most Polite Students. (j) In the Arts Ambassadors-in-School Scheme, Cheung Yee Lam was appointed as Arts Ambassador-in-School. (k) In the Outstanding Girl Guides Award (Unit Level) 2017, Chik Shin Hang was elected as Outstanding Girl Guide. 2. Academic Competitions (a) The school team won the Third Prize and the Best Performance School Award in the Hong Kong Cup Diplomatic Knowledge Contest. Besides, in the 6 th Territory-wide Chinese Knowledge Quiz Contest, the school team got the Second Prize and the Golden Merit while Ho Wing Yi and Yau Hiu Nam obtained the Merit Gold Award and the Second Prize respectively in the Individual Competition of the Contest. (b) The school team won the Second Prize and the Most Participating School in the 3 rd Basic Law cum Celebration of the 20 th Anniversary of Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Territory-wide Inter-school Competition. Besides, in the 5 th Constitutional Law, Basic Law and Hong Kong Law Knowledge Contest, the school teams got the First Prize, the Second Prize and the Third Prize respectively. (c) Mak Lok Wai, Ng Ka Ho and Tam Yee Ho obtained Certificates of Excellence (Full Marks) while 16 students got Certificates of High Distinctions in the 2016 Australian National Chemistry Quiz (Hong Kong Section). In the 2016 Science Assessment Test, the school obtained 6 Diamond Awards, 14 Gold Awards, 8 Silver Awards and 8 Bronze Awards. The school representatives also won 5 Medals, 27 High Distinctions, 21 Distinctions and 24 Credits in the Secondary School Mathematics and Science Competition. In addition, the school representatives got the Diamond Award and the Bronze Award in the Chemists Online Self Study Award Scheme. (d) The school representatives obtained 4 Gold Awards, 17 Silver Awards and 2 Bronze 2

4 Awards in the semi-final of the Asia International Mathematical Olympiad (Hong Kong Region) whereas they got 1 Second Prize, 3 Gold Awards and 1 Bronze Award in the final round. In the Pui Ching Invitational Mathematics Competition, the school representatives got the School Merit Award, 3 Silver Awards and 4 Merit Awards. In the Hong Kong Youth Mathematical High Achievers Selection Contest, the school got 1 Second Class Individual Award and 3 Third Class Individual Awards. Besides, the school team got the Group Merit Award in the 34 th Hong Kong Mathematics Olympiad, whereas Chan Wai Kit and Ng Ka Ho attained the First Class Honour and the Second Class Honour respectively in the Individual Competition of the Contest. (e) The school team won the First Prize in the CETA Cup Robotic Tournament. In the World Robot Olympiad 2017 Hong Kong Robot Challenge, the team won 2 Gold Awards and the Best Performance Award. Besides, in the RoboCup Junior (Hong Kong) Open Competition, the school team got 1 First Prize, 2 Second Prizes, 1 Third Prize and the Best Programming Award. (f) In Harvard Book Prize, Lai Suet Yiu was the Winner while Ng Cheuk Kwan and Tsang Ho got the Second Prizes. In addition, Wang Ya Lei won the Bronze Award in the Writing Contest of Chinese Secondary School Students, while other 5 students got the Merit Awards. 3. Cultural and Arts Competitions (a) The School Dance Team not only obtained 8 Honours Awards in the 53 rd Hong Kong Schools Dance Festival, but also won the Overall Championships in both the Chinese Dance Division and the Modern Dance Division. The team got 1 Gold Award and 1 Silver Award in the 37 th Shatin Dance Competition and 2 Gold Awards and 1 Silver Award in the 39 th Yuen Long Dance Competition. In the 31 st Tuen Mun Dance Competition, the team obtained 2 Gold Awards in the Modern Dance Division and the Oriental Dance Division. Besides, Man Ho Ching won 5 First Prizes, a Second Prize and 3 Third Prizes in several Latin Dance Competitions, whereas Leung Chun Mo and Kwan Kwan Kit attained the Honour of World Class Dance Achievement in the Dance Excellence. (b) The School English Debating Team won the First Prize in the Hong Kong Secondary Schools Debating Competition, while Ho Yin Lam was the Best Speaker. (c) In the 68 th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival, the school won altogether 8 First Prizes, 9 Second Prizes, 9 Third Prizes and 44 Merit Awards. The school representatives got 1 High Distinction and 4 Distinctions in the 11 th Speaking Contest for Hong Kong Students. In addition, Yau Hiu Nam attained the Third Honour in National High School Level in the Constitution of China National Public Speaking Competition held in Beijing. (d) Students got a Third Prize and 8 Merit Awards in the 69 th Hong Kong Schools Music Festival. The School Choir obtained the Silver Award in the Guangzhou Cultural Week. Besides, the School Orchestra attained the Silver Award in the Joint School Music Competition and the Merit Award in the 2016 Hong Kong Youth Music Interflows. 3

5 (e) In the Hong Kong School Drama Festival, the School Drama Team won 5 awards, namely, Outstanding Directors, Outstanding Script, Outstanding Cooperation and Commendable Overall Performance. Leung Yuk Shan took the title of Outstanding Performer. Besides, the school team was awarded the First Prize in the Speak Out-Act Up Improvised Drama Competition whereas Yau Hiu Nam and Lai Hin Wang were the Best Actors in Best Use of English and Best Acting respectively. (f) Chan Long Yin obtained the First Prize (Secondary School) in Chinese Painting in the Hong Kong Youth Cultural and Arts Competition. He also got the First Prize (Secondary School Senior) in Chinese Painting of the Youth Arts Festivals. Lee Hoi Yi won 2 First Class Awards (Hong Kong Competition and International Competition) in the International Year of Pulses Art and Design Competition. Besides, Chau Long Yat got the Third Prize in Youth Group in the National Geographic International Photo Contest. He also won the Online Popularity Award in the Hong Kong Secondary School Photography Competition. 4. Sports Competitions (a) Chau Cheuk Lam won the AS Watsons Group Hong Kong Students Sports Award. Fan Ho Hin and Li Ki Lok got 18 prizes, including 10 First Prizes with 3 new records, in different swimming competitions in this school year. (b) Choi Lok got the First Prize in the Joint School District Orienteering Championships. Besides, she got 2 First Prizes, 1 Second Prize and 1 Third Prize in several badminton competitions. (c) Loo Wing Yan won the First Prize in Long Weapon and the Second Prize in Short Weapon in the Hong Kong Children Chinese Martial Arts (Age Group) Competition. In addition, she also won the Second Prize in Long Weapon as well as the Third Prize in Short Weapon in the 36 th Chinese Martial Arts Self-Attainment Award Display. (d) In the HKSSF Inter-school Sports Competitions (Tuen Mun), the school got very remarkable achievements. Among 40 secondary schools, the boys team came second while the girls team ranked third. Swimming: The Boys Team and the Girls Team got the Overall Second Prize and Third Prize respectively. The teams also got totally 13 Championships, 11 Second Prizes and 8 Third Prizes in individual events. Volleyball: The Boys Team won the Championship in Grade AB Competition and the Second Prize in Grade C competition while the Girls Team got the Second Prize in Grade C Competition. Athletics Meet: The Athletic Team got 2 First Prizes and 1 Third Prize in individual events. Cross Country Competition: The Boys Team was the Overall Champion in Grade A Competition whereas the Girls Team got the Overall Third Prize in Grade C Competition. In the individual 4

6 event, Kwong Kam Kai won the Championship of Boys Grade C Competition. Badminton: The Girls Team won the Overall Championship in Grade C Competition and the Second Prize in Grade A Competition, while the Boys Team got the Second Prize and the Third Prize in Grade A and Grade C Competitions respectively. Basketball: The Boys Team won the Overall Second Prize in Grade C Competition. Table-tennis: The Boys Team won the Overall Second Prize in Grade C Competition. (e) The Girls Swimming Team won the Overall Third Prize in the PLK Affiliated Secondary Schools Joint Swimming Gala. They also won 1 Championship, 1 Second Prize and 3 Third Prizes in individual events. Besides, the Swimming Team also got totally 25 Championships, 24 Second Prizes and 20 Third Prizes in the individual events of all Swimming Galas held in this school year. (f) The School Rope Skipping Team won the Championship in the JRFH Inter-school Rope Skipping Competition in Secondary School B Group. They also got the Overall Second Prize in the Ziberty Rope Skipping Challenge. The representatives got totally 1 First Prize, 4 Second Prizes and 1Third Prize in the individual events of various rope skipping competition held in this school year. Social Services In praise of our students tremendous enthusiasm and intense involvement in rendering help and services to the people in need, they were granted 72 Gold Badges, 97 Silver Badges and 112 Bronze Badges in the Volunteer Movement 2016 by the Social Welfare Department. Six student bodies of our school were awarded the Gold Badges (Group Award) as well. In the Volunteer Service Campaign Competition, the Guidance Team got the Commendation Certificate. Educational Tour During the Easter Holiday, an ecological study tour to New Zealand was organized for our senior form students. The tour was an eye-opening experience and helped to broaden students horizons. Conclusion I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the unfailing support given by Po Leung Kuk, the Education Bureau, Madam Lee King Fan, alumni and parents, which helped the school to translate its mission into reality. For example, a total of $200,000 were granted by Po Leung Kuk Li Shiu Chung Quality Education Fund for installing sliding glass partitions on the two covered playgrounds to create a much better environment for students. Besides, about $69,000 were given by Po Leung Kuk as scholarships for students outstanding achievement in HKDSEE and extra-curricular activities. In addition, special thanks were due to Dr Pai Ming Chu Pearl, Independent Manager of the school s Incorporated Management Committee, for squeezing time 5

7 from her very tight schedule to head a visit to the University of Hong Kong - Shenzhen Hospital by students. The visit greatly enhanced their horizons. To conclude, as the tradition of the school, we will continue to strive for the best for our students and go on to scale new heights in the years to come. 6
