1 Geneva Junior High News Incoming Seventh Grade Student Information The mission of Geneva Junior High is for all students to become responsible citizens and for all students to achieve academic excellence in a safe school environment supported by parents, community, and staff. Welcome to the new Geneva Middle School. Mr. Candela and I are anxiously awaiting your seventh grade student s arrival for the school year. The school year will be an exciting and challenging year. The majority of the current sixth grade students who will be entering the seventh grade will have their math, language arts, and social studies on the second floor of our current building. Some of our seventh grade students may have art, science and social studies in the new middle school building. Except for band and choir, the elective courses will be 9 weeks in length. Band, music, exploratory, physical education, and lunch will be in our current junior high building until the new middle school building project is completed. The students who have classes in the new art, social studies and science classes will have them in the completed rooms on the west end of the new building. There will be a covered walk-way between the new and current buildings except for 20 feet from each building that must remain open to comply with the safety codes. Their will be solid and soft wall partitions separating our students from any workers who are completing the project. All safety features will be operational and okayed by the building inspectors and safety forces before occupancy. The lunch periods will be 43 minutes long. We will have to divide the students into two groups to be able to serve them in the current cafeteria. Half of the students will eat the first half of the period and will report to the gym for a walking program the second half. The other students will walk first and eat second. We will need much cooperation from our students to make this work as our facilities will be stretched as well as our staff. We may or may not continue the split period when we move into the new cafeteria. The majority of sixth and seventh grade classes will be held in the current junior high building until we are able to make the move. It appears that we will be moving the entire school to the new building sometime between November 24 and January 3, We will be letting you know when the final move will take place when we have a more definitive information.

2 Sports Information Eligibility to participate in athletics and extra-curricular activities is determined each nine weeks grading period. To be eligible to participate in athletics, a student must be passing 75% of the courses that they took and must have a 1.5 G.P.A. for the preceding grading period. Eighth grade students wishing to participate in the high school programs next year are subject to these same requirements. If your child is planning to participate in a fall sport, you should make an appointment now for a physical before July 1 (see below) as the fall sports programs begin in early August. The O.H.S.A.A. physical forms are available in the office. If the student has not had a physical and the proper paperwork handed in, they will not be allowed to participate. Not participating in try-outs may cause them to not make the team! You should also be aware of the Ohio High School Athletic Association bylaw that states that once a student has participated in a contest (scrimmage, preview, or other regular season/tournament contest-many of which occur in the fall before the start of school) OR has attended one day of school in grade 9, the student has established eligibility at that high school. A transfer after that time requires the student to forfeit one year of athletic eligibility. All entering seventh grade students are eligible to participate in the fall sports. Their eligibility requirements begin after the first grading period in the junior high school. Sports Physicals Geneva High School will be a host site for athletic physicals on Wednesday, June 16 from 6:00 8:00 PM Cost of the physicals at that time will be $15 for athletes who have preregistered at: BEST OF HEALTH Student athletes should pick up the required O.H.S.A.A. forms in the office prior to that evening and fill out and sign the parent and athlete sections of the multi-page form. Student Athletic Activity Fee Students who participate in junior high interscholastic sports activities must pay a $25 fee in order to participate. The athletes who make the teams will be given a form with instructions on where and who to pay with deadlines for each activity.

3 Fall Sports Starting Dates Football The team meeting and practice for the seventh and eighth grade in the fall will be on Friday, July 30 at 3:30 to 4:15 at Memorial Field. If it is raining, the meeting will be held in the junior high gym.. Practices will be held every weekday from 2:30 to 4:00 from August 5 to August 27. Students should be prepared for conditioning and should wear shorts, t-shirt, and cleats or tennis shoes (cleats are recommended). Volleyball Volleyball try-outs will be held starting August 9 at Geneva High School. They will continue on August 10 and 11. Students must attend all three days. The seventh grade times are 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. The eighth grade times are 10:00 am to 12:00 p.m. There are only spots open for each grade so being at try-outs is mandatory. Practices will be everyday after try-outs for those that make the team. DO NOT PLAN VACATION AFTER AUGUST 9th IF YOU WANT YOUR CHILD TO BE A MEMBER OF THE VOLLEYBALL TEAM! All volleyball information can be viewed at Girl s Tennis The first junior high girl s tennis meeting and practice for parents and students will be Monday, August 16 at 5:00 p.m. at the tennis courts behind the junior high school. Proper tennis attire is required along with a racquet and water bottle. Parents, please attend!!! Soccer There will be a parent meeting for boys and girls interested in participating in soccer on Monday, August 9 at 5:30 p.m. behind the St. John Lutheran Church on South Broadway. Practice will follow at 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Practices will be every weekday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. until school starts. After school starts the practices will be immediately after school. Athletes must have shin guards with the NOCSAE logo, cleats, and a water bottle. Check the local paper for open field nights during the summer. The time and places have not been determined. Golf-Boys Try-outs for the boy s golf teams will be held August 17, 18 and 20th at Hemlock Springs Golf Course. Students trying out must be at the course at 7:00 a.m. Golf Girls Dates and times of try-outs will be at Geneva-on-the-Lake Golf Course on Wednesday, August 18th-20th. The try-outs will run from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Cross Country Practice will begin on Monday, August 9 at 8:30 to 10:00 AM in front of glass enclosure of the current building.

4 Summer Sports Camps! Volleyball There is a camp for elementary and junior high volleyball players June 8, 9, 10 and June 11 The time of the camp is from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Brochures can be picked up in the junior high or any elementary office. The camp is for students entering 4-9. Any questions, contact Coach Haeseler at annah.haeseler@neomin.org Boys Basketball There is a boy s basketball camp for boys entering grades 4-9. It will be held at the high school from 9:00 a.m 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 14 Friday, June 19. Registration forms are available in the office. They are to be returned by June 9. $5.00 off if registration is received before May 31st. Girls Basketball There will be a girl s basketball camp Monday, June 21 Thursday June 24 from 9:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m at the high school. Registration forms are available in the office. They are to be returned by June 16. Wrestling Camp There will be a Wrestling Camp at Geneva High School July 12-July 16 for students entering grades 1-8. The camp will run from 10:00 a.m to 2:00 p.m. Forms are available at the elementary offices, junior high and high school office. Tennis Camp There will be a tennis camp this summer held at the tennis courts behind the junior high school beginning July 5. For information regarding the camp, call Mr. Dubsky at Golf Camp There will be a golf camp July 12-July 16 for boys entering grades 4-8. It will be held at Hemlock Springs Golf Course. Brochures are available in the junior high office. Registration deadline is July 5th. Make an appointment for your child s physical today! The physical must be on the O.H.S.A.A. form signed by the doctor and parent. No student can participate without a valid physical turned in.

5 Seventh Grade Orientation We will be having a seventh grade orientation on Thursday, August 26 from 7:30-9:00 PM. The students and parents will report to the gym for a brief introduction of staff. We will also cover some important informational items at that time. Students and parents will then report to a homeroom where they will receive the schedules, locker assignments, and the various forms that need to be returned to us the first day of school. The cafeteria staff will also be present to introduce themselves and will take money to put into the student s account. Each student will receive a lunch pin number that they will have to punch in each day at the cash register. Pre-paying will help get our students through the lunch lines much quicker. It also allows parents to keep track of what their child is purchasing for lunch. We would ask that you not arrive until 7:15 because we will be holding the sixth grade orientation from 5:30 to 7:00 that same evening. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. English Festival We had seventy-two seventh grade students from Geneva Junior High School who attended this year s English Festival at Kent State-Ashtabula. Our students spent the day with other seventh and eighth grade students from around the county in creative workshops such as, storytelling, drama, and computers. Plans for next year s festival have already begun! The reading list is available for incoming seventh grade students who are interested in attending the festival in Interested students are encouraged to use the books as their summer reading to help lessen the amount of reading they will need to do in the fall. It is a great experience for those who attend. Advance and Accelerated classes are required to attend the English Festival.
