1 Be who you are, become who you want to be Welcome to Induction 2017 Welcome to Bilborough Sixth Form College! We hope you enjoy the next couple of days and we look forward to you joining us in September. Name Tutor Group
2 Why an Induction? We think our college is great and we hope you will too! But you also need to be sure that Bilborough College and what it offers is the right option for you. This Induction will enable you to find out a little more about the college, the subjects you are thinking of studying and our expectations of you as a student. We ve prepared a provisional timetable for you based on your application form. It contains the following: Tutor Group Sessions There are 4 of these and you must attend them all. The tutor group sessions are a great opportunity to make some new friends and your tutor will want to see you at the start and end of each day to make sure everything is going OK. Subject Tasters (A Level/ BTEC) Your enrolment form in the summer will reflect the choices you make at Induction, so why not visit as many subjects as possible? If you achieve the GCSE grades needed to study these subjects, then we can guarantee you this course. If you change your mind about your subject choices at enrolment we will try to accommodate your requests but can t guarantee it. Student Spotlight This session is led by our current students. It s a great opportunity to find out what Bilborough is really like and have all your questions answered. Photograph You will also need to have a photograph taken for your Bilborough College ID card. This will be on your college lanyard which everyone wears at all times when joining us in September. Practice your pose! Photographs will be taken in the Library. Bilborough Extra We have loads of extra activities for you to get involved in when you come to Bilborough. At Induction you will have the chance to try out some of these options. Have a look, see what takes your fancy and just turn up and join in! Feeling Sporty? Are you interested in playing sport for the college? The sports teams are open to everyone, not just PE students. If you are interested in playing for one of the college teams (Football, Netball, Rugby, Hockey, Basketball), please register at the Sports and Recreation desk in the refectory. If you sign up for Football, Netball or Basketball you will need to attend trials during session 8 - make sure you bring your kit! Further details of the trials will be given when you register for a team. Learning Support and Wellbeing If you have indicated a specific learning difficulty or a physical health condition on your application, Learning Support will have written to you before Induction and you will be sent an appointment with Learning Support in September. If you would like to speak to Learning Support about support at Bilborough, or you have existing documents for copying, please see the team in reception when you are free. If you had an exam arrangement at school and have not told us yet, please see Learning Support as arrangements do not automatically transfer to college. If you have indicated a Wellbeing condition our Wellbeing coach will send you an appointment in September. 2
3 General Information Smoking Student Helpers There will be student helpers in college all day. You ll be able to identify them by their red t-shirts and they are here to answer any questions and show you the way if you are lost! Feel free to talk to them about what it s like to be a student at Bilborough. Lifts Food and Drink The Refectory and Shop are open from 8.30am. Head for the Refectory for a big choice of healthy food and drink, including baguettes, sandwiches and hot meals - plus free samples! Or, feel free to bring your own packed lunch. Join us for a free BBQ on the second day of Induction. Toilets Toilets - including disabled facilities - are easy to find on all floors. The lifts are for use by staff and disabled students only. We prefer students not to smoke. However, if you do smoke then you must use the dedicated smoking area by the bike sheds at the main college gates. Fire Evacuation There will be no planned fire practice on the Induction days. If the Fire Alarm sounds it will be genuine, so please leave the building via the nearest emergency exit and congregate on the College playing fields. For safety reasons please ensure that you do not use the lifts. If for any reason you cannot use the stairs (ie you have a lift pass) there are emergency call buttons located near each lift. When activated a trained member of staff will help you leave the building safely. Final Tutor Group Session Don t forget - you must see your tutor at the end of the Induction course. If you are still hoping to come to Bilborough in September you will need to confirm your choice of subjects. If you decide that Bilborough is not the right place for you, then you also need to let your tutor know. 3
4 Provisional course agreed at Induction Tutor Group Bilborough Extra Activities * *most students will do 3 subjects. A minority request a fourth subject this will be dependent on your GCSE results. This can be discussed in more detail at enrolment. Work Experience In addition, we recommend all students take the opportunity to engage in some form of work experience whilst at college. For those of you taking the BTEC extended programmes, hoping to go onto vocational-related courses at university (eg medical-related, teaching, law) or a higher level apprenticeship/ job, then at least 5 days of work experience is something you need to do. It s worth looking out for suitable placements over the summer. What do I need to know about Enrolment? GCSE results day is Thursday 24th August. We will send you an on results day asking whether or not you intend to take up your place at Bilborough. Please respond to this as it will really help us. If you have achieved the necessary GCSE results, the course you confirm at Induction is guaranteed. To confirm your place, you must attend the appropriate enrolment session on Thursday 24th August or Friday 25th August. It will be busy so to minimise your waiting time please try and keep to the allocated times. Your exact course will be discussed with you at enrolment. NB: At the end of this booklet there is a list of the specific course requirements for all A Levels and BTECs If you have achieved 5 GCSEs at grade C/4 or above but have narrowly missed either your Maths or English GCSE then you can still come to enrolment as it might be possible for you to take up your place at Bilborough at the same time as taking a GCSE re-sit. However, we can t guarantee that we will still be able to offer you a place at college as it will depend on your choice of A Level/BTEC subjects and whether English or Maths at grade C/4 was a necessary condition of studying these subjects. If you have not achieved 5 GCSEs at grade C or above (including English and Maths) then unfortunately Bilborough does not have an appropriate course for you. If Bilborough was the only College you applied to we recommend that you contact your school for names of alternative colleges. May we take this opportunity to wish you every success in your future studies. 4
